Copper/golden in color, Schafly Pale Ale pours out of the bottle with little fanfare. There isn’t much foam, little or no lacing, and the nose on the beer is rather light, with scents of caramel, toasted malt, and a few other things but not very assertive overall.

This pale ale offers flavors of toasted malt, caramel, bread, notes of tea, and earthy, herbal hops. Digging a little deeper, I can taste some notes of honey, biscuits, and some light fruit. The flavor is well balanced overall and no one taste dominates the others.

This is a good example of a pale ale that is less hoppy and more restrained than some of the big, hoppy pale ale that are so commonplace nowadays. I wasn’t sure if I liked it at first, but I notice that the flavor has grown on me after a second bottle and I like it more. Still not an amazing pale ale and I can think of several I like better, but it is a good product nonetheless.

Pours to a generous and lasting buff head with moderate lacing and iconic copper color. Aroma is caramel, biscuit, yeast esters and a hint of earthy hops. Flavor is a session-able and easygoing amalgamation of the aforementioned aromas with a balancing resiny hop bitterness. Overall, this is a flavorful low alcohol (by US craft standards) session brew that has balance and flavor on a par with its English counterparts.

Poured into a shaker pint glass.

The beer is a deep amber color with a hint of orange hue. A thick foamy cream colored head holds up well, receding to a thick soapy film. Excellent lacing on the glass.

The aroma is of toasted grains, faintly malty with a tea-like hop aroma.

The taste is fairly well balanced with biscuity malts bringing a mellow sweetness first. Hops soon bring a little spiciness, as well as faint citrus in the finish.

Mouthfeel is pretty clean with medium body.

Overall, a really session-friendly beer with decent balance.

A: A nice golden amber color. Light head with good retention.

S: Malty, with a very slight hoppyness.

T: Sweet malty, with a slightly bitter finish. Not as hoppy as other pale ales.

M: Crisp , medium bodied. Smooth, easy drinking.

O: This is a smooth refreshing drink. Notable for its simplicity, and easy to drink in quantity. Not a beer I would seek out specially, but a good stand-by that would go well with any kind of spicy or savory foo;, as it did when I had a barbeque the other night.

A: Pours a nice honey-color with a small amount of foamy head that stays for a while.

S: Real light on the smell, but some grain / bread aroma.

T: Taste is light at first, but finishes with a pretty nice dry, slightly bitter taste. Overall taste is very much grainy. Nothing memorable here, but plenty drinkable.

M: Medium-bodied, about what it should be for a pale ale. Pretty decent.

O: This beer fulfills what is says it is, which is a drinkable and refreshing, and flavorful enough to be enjoyable. It isn't a beer I'd make a point of buying specifically, but it works well enough for what it is.

12oz bottled January 8, 2013. Served at around 40-45F.

Pours lightly hazy amber with a one finger white head that leaves some nice lacing and holds a good cap.

Aroma is earthy hops, bready malt, light caramel, hint metallic. Good strength.

Flavor features more hops than the aroma, earthy, resinous, some citrus hops, bready malt with a bit of sweet caramel, good bitterness on the finish. Minimal alcohol.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, a little creamy, a little sticky, good carbonation.

Nice English-style Pale with some decent hops in the flavor. Refreshing and easy to drink.

Poured into standard pint glass

A: pale copper color poured 1 finger of head. Laced quite well for style.

S: weak aroma, some toffee malt aromas. very faint orange aromas. Mostly aroma of C02.

T: nice toffee/caramel flavors. Not much else. Very dry almost gritty finish.

M:Quite a bit of carbonation for style. Slick-heavy mouthfeel was pleasing but ruined by co2 bite.

O: overall, this was a decent PA. Suffered from too much carbonation and lack of complexity. However the flavors that were there were quite good. Not bad just a bit bland.
