Notes:
Black Sand Porter is a robust, full bodied porter with pronounced bittersweet chocolate flavor and aroma from the diverse variety of malt used to brew this beer. The hops balance the the maltiness of this robust and roasty ale.

Had on tap at the Hawaii Kai Brewpub. Taken from notes.

A: As typical with Porters, it was dark and a nice one inch head.

S: Roasted malts that were very sweet smelling.

T&M: Nice and smooth with a dry and nutty roasted taste. Has a slight dry finish. This is how Porters should be. Awesome.

D: I often wonder why I don't get this one every time I go for a pint, but when I do, I'm reminded of how awesome it is. Love it!

A: Very dark brown. Poured a 1 finger brown head with good retention. Laced in wide rings.

S: Bitter coffee and dark chocolate. A hint of vanilla. Earth and hay.

T: Follows toasted malts in the nose. Slight bitter hop character.

M: Light body. Low carbonation. Smooth and rich.

D: Good flavor. Mouthfeel consistent with style. I drank a growler back at the hotel.

Kona Black Sand Porter...on tap at MJ Armstrong's

Appearance-dark brown to light black, crackling lace but it isn't that large of a head.

Smell-A lot of coffee, really sweet sort of chocolate aroma as well.

Taste/Mouthfeel-sweet and a lot of coffee flavors but actually sort of light on the tongue, smooth and well rounded.

Drinkability-in spite of the alcohol really smooth and drinkable, tastes lighter than it is.

Overall-a very well made porter, hits the style well, flavorful, easy to drink. Can't ask for much more.

Dark brew. Hints of reddish brown when you look at it in the light. Off white/tan head left some lace on the glass.

Slightly sweet beer but dry at the same time. Like a medium dark roast, not harsh at all. Very smooth on the palate.

Medium bodied brew. The body adds to the enjoyment of drinking this porter.

I am not a huge porter fan but this beer was very drinkable. It seems like the porters at this brewery are the highlights.

I would love to buy this beer at home but it is not available.

Had this at Kona Brew-Pub in Kona.

A- Pitch black with tan head.

S- I found hints of burnt chocolate, or perhaps just chocolate milk, tobacco or pipe smoke, and a bit of vanilla. Nothing overpowering or demanding here though.

T- A more intense showing of the nose. Very nice taste. Almost no noticeable bitters. The vanilla finds its way to the palate as well as deep roasted malts that provide flavors of tobacco, chocolate, and roasted nuts.

M- Not thick enough in my opinion. Too watery.

D- Strong flavor profile and poor mouthfeel makes this beer just a bit above average for me.

I had this beer on tap at the brewery while I was on vacation there. This beer has a dark ruby color through which very little sunlight is able to penetrate. There are very strong roasted and chocolate aromas. This is a beer that draws you in once you smell it. The flavor is heavily roasted but with good hop balance for the style. It has a medium body. Overall, this is one of my favorite Kona brews. Excellent drinkability.

Had this on tap at their Hawaii Kai restaurant.

Beautiful dark porter. Very dark. Nice creamy brown head. Nice lacing.

Smell was dark coffee with smokiness. Taste was similar. Smoky. Coffee. Dark chocolate was evident. A little too much bitter aftertaste for my liking, but many might find this perfect for an American porter.

The mouthfeel was fine. Somewhat cleansing. Overall, I thought I would like this more than I did. One glass was enough. Perhaps eating some chocolate dessert would have made this beer more impressive [though Kona's Da Grind Buzz Kona Coffee Stout would be a more perfect way to end the meal].
