I just stopped in here tonight for the first time as it's near my work and had an awful experience. I was bitter the whole 2 hour commute back to my house in Los Feliz, and remain angry and outraged enough to want to post this even after cooling down.
I was eyeing a box of an uncommon beer stored atop a shelf, and when the lad who stocks the beer came by, I politely asked if I could have a beer from the box. With the most condescending, patronizing, mean-spirited tone and body language possible, he gave a pretentious laugh at my expense and said "Nah, man." I suspected from the way he did it that it had something to do with me specifically - perhaps my age. I inquired further, asking him if they were out of the beer (giving him an easy out in case it hadn't gone on sale yet or if they really were out). He just looked at me sternly and said "Not going to happen." He was clearly making a judgement call based on something about me that I didn't deserve a beer from the box.
I can't emphasize what a dick move it was - mostly from the way he did it. It left me bitter and confused. Suffice it to say the service here is awful. By far the worst service I've received in any bottle shop, and I've been to bottle shops in 15 different countries.
The selection is as good as any SoCal beer store, but then it actually isn't; if they won't give you a beer you want, then really you don't have beers to select from, do you?
I'd recommend the Glendale Whole Foods or the Beverly Hills Whole Foods if you like friendly service over douchey beer stockers. I won't be coming back.
I noticed prices on many beers were higher than I've seen even at high priced L.A. shops like the Cap N Cork. Old Rasputin here is $10.49 per 4 pack (compared to $8.49 at Bevmo and $8.99 at the Cap N Cork in Los Feliz).

Really wanted to like this place more when I went in, but somewhat disappointed with the selection.
Beer section is in the back middle of the store, near the "smokehouse". 50-50 mix of warm and cold selections. For an out-of-towner, I was disappointed in the local selections. If I lived here, I would be happy with the diversity of national and even east coast product offered.
Small bar in the back too, with 3 local selections - and DFH punkin.
Service didn't exist. Didn't need it, though.
I'd stop if in the area, but not go out of my way to visit.

Have gone here a few times while visiting a friend who lives off of 12th street and Wilshire. The atmosphere is lively and good, but it somewhat ends there. The quality is okay (had a few things, some RR, the CA norms, etc.) but nothing out of the ordinary. The beer guy was stocking the place one time (or someone was) and he was not the most helpful when I asked a few questions. The selection is small but somewhat decent. I'd only stop here if visiting my friend to be honest. The WF on Lincoln is much better.

I'm ranking this strictly on Beer. The Cold beer section is tiny. The warm beer section is Tiny. BUT the best part of this whole foods besides the hot chicks in santa monica is the beer thats not in the cooler. In the cooler they had your Duvels, Chimays, Rogues, Stone's etc but I found some killer beers in the warm section...Expensive Yes. I found a few christmas beers, some humongous belgian beers for special occasions, Party packs with special glasses included, westmalle, etc ....The only reason I stopped in was because I was bored waiting for someone and it was close by....I ranked the selection high because in this case if you look hard enough there are some great beers tucked away. If your looking for something off pace stop in you'll find some good beer but dont expect it to be cold. If your with your girlfriend/wife keep your eyes to the floor.

I did it. I finally did it. I've been avoiding Whole Foods for years for personal reasons, but some foreign friends were in town and they were looking to buy groceries. After spennding half a day on the 3rd Street Promenade, Whole Foods was the closest food store that came up on the GPS. I tried to relax and look at the bright side; at least there should be a good beer selection to pick from.
It's a small, clean store with a small parking lot that had plently of spots during our arrival at 9pm. The service departments were still open at this late hour, which considering other stores close theirs down by then, was a convenient surprise. Hot, rotisserie chicken, heck yea! Pizza by the slice, cool! And the beer...
All of the beer is in the cold box, which fit our schedule perfect. Having a clean box that was dust free with makred with prices was nice to look at, and fresh bottles of Leffe and Tripel Karmeliet that we drank further puts my confidence in the quality of the beer sold. Beside Leffe and Tripel Karmeliet, beers from Erdinger, Stone, Ballast Point, Allagash, Dogfish Head, and a number more make this selection a good one. Based on what we bought, I'd say that the prices were reasonable.
Well, I didn't hate it. In the context of things, it may have been our best choice for one stop good food and good beer. Still, the glittering generalities that are all over the store is a lot for me to digest.

An organic health food grocery store. One of many in the corporate chain. Yet the best beer selection in Santa Monica proper at this time. 8/10/03. Hopefully some store will come along like the beverage warehouse or hi-times liquors. Not likely at far as I can figure.
This place is a grocery store that sells non-hormone infiltrated beef and chicken. Tofu reigns supreme. Healthy for the healthy person. No pestisides. If you want to grow larger because of hormones in the food, this is not the place to shop.
Great soup and salad bar though. Also plenty of wine.
The beer selection does have a lot of variety. A number of craft brews and a good selection of imports. Belgians, Germans, Japanese, Russian, Brazilian and a few others. A good selection for this type of store. Sadly this is the best spot in Santa Monica proper. Better selections require a trip out of Santa Monica.
This store is also very expensive. One it sells organic food and two it is in Santa Monica.
I have been to other Whole Foods markets and the beer selection varies from store to store. The Santa Monica store selection is smaller than the other Whole Food markets that I have been to.
