I first came here in when I traveled the very short distance to Bradford University for my interview with the Dean of the Chemical Engineering Department. Afterwards, before heading home, I sneaked across town to visit this Mecca. At the time, March 1986, it had an unparalleled range of Real Ales, thankfully, it still has. Back then, it was part of The Fighting Cocks chain, better known as a TFC House, owned by the legendary Jim Wright, Old Red Eyes himself.
The décor still sports the original TFC look, a down to earth simple drinking environ comprised of bare floorboards, simple furniture & an unpretentious working class atmosphere; in short, a drinkers paradise. Located about 1 mile from the City Centre, it is very easy to walk here from the Bus/Train Stations, & is probably easier & more sensible than driving.
Basic wooden fittings & floorboards make me feel right at home, and reinforce the fact that the focus here is Real Ale not a plush marketing experience. Usually, the 12 Handpumps are all serving beer in excellent condition, half of which are turned over to regular beers, including Taylors Golden Best & Landlord plus Thwaites Mild. Also serves at least one Real Cider (rotating, either Biddendens or Thatchers both excellent). Also sells Gales Fruit Wines (beware!) and in addition to this, it has a small but interesting selection of Belgium & German beers. This was actually one of the first Pubs where I came across foreign beers, & the first place I tried the mighty EKU28 what a night that was!
Lunchtime meals are served weekdays; the 'door-stop' Sandwiches are highly recommended & great value. Simply put; this place has a superb cask beer choice & a no-frills environment in which to enjoy it.
With the new ultra-modern, super-clean UK pub-chains like J.D. Wetherspoons, its so easy to forget, & knock places like this now, as I frequently encountered during my last UK visit. People have such short memories. This annoys me, because if these knockers were in Bradford in March 1986, as I was, this was truly THE place to be, & a precursor to the modern day chains focused on cask beer. And as far as I am concerned, you can keep your carpeted floors, pound-pint-nights & trendy prissy clean toilets with male hand-creams & full rolls of toilet paper. I come here for the beer only. This is still *well* worth a visit!!! Come here & see where & why it all started.
For real drinkers only. Jim Wright RIP.
