Hazed blonde with a creamy eggshell cap. Untoasted grain and lemon peel are about all I smell in this one. Raw grainy flavors and citric hop notes in the finish. Smooth and effervescent with bright carbonation. A really good session beer, and I think that's the point with this brew. An inoffensive entry level craft brew.

Poured from the bottle into a pint glass, beer is a slightly hazy, golden-apple juice with a huge, pillowy, white head. The nose is very heavy with lighter fruits like apples, pears and peaches. The flavor reflects similar fruity characteristics but they are more sudued than in the nose; beer finishes very smooth and clean. Mouthfeel is light to medium in body with a thin but slick head which helps add to the drinkability. Overall, a solid beer, better alternative to BMC beer that might turn someone on to craft beer.

Served in a Devil's Backbone willibecher.

Randomly found this guy at my old Purdue VBS after DLD. Figured it was worth a shot (and the sixer had to be filled, y'know). Pours a clear bright straw with a temporarily healthy white foamy head. It's been said before that my sense of smell is pretty weak, but I still challenge anyone to come up with much from this brew. All I get is some vague graininess, some wheat, and a hint of metal. The taste has more oomph to it, but has basically the same components: light malts, feathery bitterness, minor sweetness, and a tiny hint of that metallic quality. Despite the inherent lightness, both in body and in carbonation, the persistent tinniness, which thankfully does lessen over time, is a bit off-putting. Combine that with a very ordinary flavor, a very ordinary and ho-hum brew results (though it is still relatively drinkable).

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. This ale produced a big tight knit foamy head that had good retention.

This a pretty golden ale that has the right amount of carbonation for the style. It is light bodied and smooth. Beyond that this is a pretty plain beer. It could use more hops and flavor. But, I think that is what the brewers were going for. It is an easy drinking, good tasting beer. Nothing spectacular, but a refreshing beer.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: Hazy golden yellow with a thin white head.

Smell: Void of just about all aromas. Very faint fruity flowery hops. Disappointing.

Taste: Flowery taste. Aside from that it's very bland and a hollow experience.

Bright goldenrod with swirls of superfine yeast. The bone colored crown looks much better than expected and tells me that this isn't some cheap fly-by-night ale. The foam is frothy and sticky, with some pretty impressive looking lace being laid down in the end.

I'm not sure that Sergeants is really an APA (especially after smelling it), but I had next to nothing to go on. Besides, it's American, pale and an ale. A decent amount of musky noble hoppiness and almost no ale yeast esters means that it most closely resembles a German pilsner. Actually, now that I read the description, it's an American blonde ale.

And it's a pretty good one at that. I hope this doesn't sound condescending, but I think that the men behind Sergeants American Ale have achieved their aim of "brewing a beer formulated and marketed to the 'average Joe' GI". It's a good, solid, honest brew that is easy to drink. It's also a hell of a lot better than the most popular beers in America.

The malt is strictly untoasted cereal grain-like (most likely pale and/or pils exclusively) and the hops are of the grassy German variety. A little more hop flavor and bitterness would have been great, but we have to keep in mind the target audience. There's slightly too much sweetness for the finish to be considered crisp. A small splash of lemon juiciness is the only real fault.

The mouthfeel is fine for a 5.0% ale. It's closer to light than medium and has carbonation that is within the wide range of acceptable. It doesn't pamper the mouth by any means, but then it doesn't offend it either.

Sergeants American Ale does what it was brewed to do. I've said this before and I'll say it again: if there was any justice in the world, this beer would out-sell BMC 1000:1. Salud! Or is that Salute?
