After the demise of Edmonton Trail this was my favourite liquor store. I don't know what happened but the imported beer kiosk in the middle of the seventeenth avenue location is now a shadow of what it once was. Seventeenth was the best of the three Royal Liquor locations to go to but now it has become one of a dozen second tier stores. Location has become more important than selection in choosing this store. Still friendly to the beer community but not for selection. Willow Park is still your best bet.

The main store of the chain, located on 17 Ave, with a good size parking lot (its a tough area to find parking so that is a plus). Large selection of beers on the back wall in coolers that includes all the macros, some locals, and imports. The good stuff is in a center island display with an impressive selection of microbrews, belgians, and specialty imports. At least a dozen beers I have not seen at any other Calgary location. At the front near the till is a fridge with lots of singles as well. Prices seem about right. Worth a look if you are in the area. It is kind of hard to rate because if it is place worthy of being listed here, it is already way ahead of the majority of Liquor/Beer Stores.

The best store in this chain, somewhere not far off downtown. If you want beer in Calgary, there is not much selection, but there is little here. A few local breweries, decent Unibroue seletcion which is well-carried out here, and a lot of macro stuff. Calgary is ripe for beer, and I would think the private stores will respond to demand. There is also no major US beer city to spur things on. Maybe by more private orders of out-of-province craft beers Service:merely lineups and money collection..

Although this is part of a chain, this particular location is noteworthy enough to mention. Quite a large selection of beer found in coolers that take up the back wall of the store. However they have a small fancy shelved-in section near the coolers where they offer a variety of lesser known microbrews and a fair amount of rare imports. Selection seems to rotate fairly often. Decent offering of Belgians, first place I've been able to find Duvel (red lettering) in a very long time. Also good for finding decent British imports, as well as German and Eastern European. I also noticed today that they will now start carrying Fuller's, which scores big points for me (I don't have to drive up to the Chateau Louis in Edmonton to get my fix anymore). The only drawback is that all of these great imports are not chilled. Actually many of them are, but in coolers on the ass end of the tills at the front of the store. Many times by the time you've noticed them it's too late, so be forwarned and keep a watch out. Still, a fine location for beer hunting in Calgary.
