I purchased a bomber of Mission St. Brown Ale from Trader Joe's a few weeks back for, if I remember correctly, around $3.50. At that price, and with a 5.7% ABV, I figured I couldn't go terribly wrong. On opening the bottle, I was unsurprised to find a rather light aroma, but still detected good hints of yeasty brown breads and toasted grains, as well as subtle coffee and chocolate notes.

On the tongue, the beer has an immediate and nice cream-and-light-coffee taste, accompanied by hints of freshly-baked wheat bread, and subtle flavorings of milk chocolate and toasted nuts. The flavors are quite light, and tend to pass away quickly, leaving little aftertaste. Still, the ones that are present are, for the short time they last, well-balanced and delicious. Mouthfeel is medium-light, and carbonation is medium-light.

Overall, while it is true that you get what you pay for with a bomber of this price, I think that the casual beer drinker will find this an excellent value; it's certainly a far better option than a Bud Light.

I poured this beer into my tumbler at 45 degrees. The beer was the color of coca-cola and poured a colored big bubble head. The beer smelled like nougat. It had a rich wonderful taste that was a little sweet but not too bad. It was like a liquid candybar. I will buy again.

Poured at room temp in hotel glass (bought at Trader Joe's)

A: not lively carbonation; thin head, dissipating quickly;
S: caramel, toasted malt--quite pleasant and inviting
T: slightly watery version of a standard brown ale; nutty approach to classic toasted malt; hops give it a grapefruit rind quality

Overall, not bad, esp. as a table beer, but not outstanding
