Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. Pours dark black with some white foam. Pumpkin and spices. Nutmeg. Taste is a sweet malt; sticky; cloying. Brown sugar for sure. Too sweet, no bite. Just ok. A difficult one to get all the way through.

Not one I'd try again.

This is beer 15 from the Rieder advent calendar. A deep rich mahogany in colour, no head or lacing. There is a distinct smoky burnt toast aroma that is really cool, never smelled any beer like it. Contradictory to that smell, the flavour has an intense sweetness. It's fairly full-bodied, with a syrupy finish that is reminiscent of hickory or teriyaki. It's very unique, and I respect and applaud the creativity that went into this brew, but this is just not my style. It is most definitely the most interesting offering from this calendar so far though...

330mL btl from AUSTRIA, from Core brewing that is owned by the above stated conglomeration (I speak a little German and that is what I got), called Kürbiskern Bier, its German for "Pumpkin Seed beer" in a tulip glass

Dark ruby earth colour that is clear and royally luxurious. Thick head that is stable and dense, cream and light latte colour. Fair lacing.

Smells of deeply roasted coffee over sugars and molasses. Like a Spanish coffee with brandy and Kahlua. Smells engineered, fake and artificially scented. This knocks it down from an otherwise reasonable rating on the nose.

Nutty brown ale hops with a little caramel and satisfying squashy root veg hints. Creamy coffee and molasses twinge. Lightly cooked brown sugars with a higher alcohol warmth than the 4.9%. Earthy dry, lightly dusted note on the finish that is rustic and pleasing.

A little less body than I was hoping for but the residual sugars smooths it out, with very little carbonation despite a VERY light coating of CO2 on the tongue that is both slightly bitter and numbing.

A easy enough beer with a great nose despite lacking any real depth. Some roasty notes that are uninspired but comes together in a very easy drinking, sweet coffee and roast root veg skin stout(?). smells artificial, I cant really put my finger on why but it follows through on the palate in a slight way.

330ml bottle, day 15 of the 2012 Craft Beer calendar. Hard to discern where this actually comes from, as it is apparently brewed in Austria, but with strong Polish connections abounding. Perhaps a contracted offering?

This beer pours a clear, dark bronzed amber hue, with two fingers of foamy, bubbly beige head, which leaves some very attractive honeycombed lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.

It smells of nutty caramel malt, a slight treacle mustiness, stale brown sugar, and a slight vegetal, chewing seed earthiness. The taste is sharp, somewhat sweet caramel malt, an oily nuttiness, more molasses-tinged brown sugar, some leafy, earthy hops, and a roasted seed essence that I can only compare to that bowl of leftover pumpkin seeds still sitting on my kitchen counter.

The bubbles are pretty laid-back, but strong enough to be supportive, the body medium-light in weight (for a purported 'stout'), and smooth in an appreciably general manner. It finishes well off-dry, the caramel, nuts, and dark sugar facing only a slight vegetal astringency offset.

A nifty dark ale, with deftly applied pumpkin-esque undertones. Not really all that stout-like, but this appears to be a lost in translation thing, as the Czech interpretation on the label: 'tmavé pivo' (dark beer) tells the real tale. In the end, a tasty seasonal offering, even if it is a season or so late.

330ml bottle poured into tulip 20/10/12

A looks like brown liquid until held to the light where it glows a purple ruby, large mocha head retains very well and leaves several thick rings of lace followed by random patches

S molasses is strong followed by some roasted nuts, brown sugar, hard toffee and some faint cherry cola, the pumpkin seeds work well and smell just a little burnt

T the nutty notes and molasses come out a little stronger, nice earthy tones and burnt brown sugar/caramel, tastes pretty good a nice surprise

M somewhat light bodied, a little sticky with enough bubbles to give it some life, nutty molasses lingers on the finish

O I didn't know what to expect but this one worked well for me, well suited for this chilly Fall evening and by Fall I mean Winter because I live in Calgary and its barfing snow

It would seem I'm reviewing the same beer but my bottle has no mention of Poland but matches the listing on the other site, I'm guessing this ones Brewed Under License. A pleasant surprise and I could drink a few no problems

.33L emptied into a Pokal.

A: Pours a reddish brown with a tan 1-finger head which quickly receeds to a trace ring. No lacing.

S: Roasted pumpkin seeds, coffee and caramel.

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

T: Roasted malt are immediately apparent. Hops are on the weak side. Dark bread and coffee as the beer warms. Aftertaste is dry.

D: Odd combination here. I like pumpkin seed oil (a Styrian speciality) and I like beer, but I never thought that they would make a viable combination. Different, but I like it.

Poured into a pilsner style glass. Clear deep mahogany color with a small off-white head that quickly goes into a thin ring with very minor lacing. Very rich malty aroma with another earthy scent (Styrian pumpkin seeds?). Rich malty flavor with a citrus after taste. A slight but pleasant burning sensation on my tongue. This goes down real well and is supposed to be good for you. Wish this was more readily available. Was very surprised to find it was a twist-off cap.
