Parking at the bus stop across the street and running in, I did not notice any beer at first. Lots of wine. But there are 3-4 coolers stocked with beer. The micros they have are the "usual suspects". Smutty, HIPA, Rogue, Unibrue, etc. Nothing "unusual or rare". It took me a bit to decide, seeing all the beer was about equal. A growler of Ipswitch caught my eye, but that too was "too ordinary". Overall, a good place to grab a session beer or beer for company. It is summer you know.

Once upon a time, maybe roughly 20 years ago, this was THE best beer store in Cambridge. I tried many interesting beers that were completely unavailable anywhere else. I first tried Chimay (before it was ubiquitous), Spaten, Imperial Russian Stout, Fullers, and many others. Well, telescope forward and many of these beers that were once difficult to find, are now standard stock. The University wine shop has retired its rack of specialty beers long ago, and what you find is in the cooler. I went in there a few years ago, after a long interregnum, and asked them what happened to all their beers. The salesperson told me that it was obvious I had not been there in years, that they only stock what moves quickly. They also had this really cute, large bellied cat, which I'm sure is also a memory too.
Re-review August 2009: I'm going to add a couple of points to the store. The cooler had some decent singles available, Old Thumper, Schmaltz, Ithica Brewing. There were also some decent 750 ml in the cooler as well. Not a bad establishment, better than it was a couple years ago. I wouldn't go out of my way for it though.

Small little shop located on Mass. Ave near Boca Grande. Huge sign atop the store.
A huge selection of wine and not a bad selection of booze. The beer selection is pretty much standard with a few nice ones tucked in there too. I believe there were 4 coolers for beer with one for macros, two for micros and semi micros and one for singles. The singles selection seems to be split up six packs as there were more than a few of each kind. Good selection of micros, but nothing too too impressive. In stock were: Tuckerman's, Stone, Ipswich, Long trail, Harpoon, Stone coast, DFH, sierra, magic hat, smuttynose, wolaver's, Rouge, Berkshire, Chimay, Duvel, and Ommegang, and I think a few others I cann't remember. Good place in a pinch, but I wouldn't make a specific trip there. Walked out with a DFH90 single--which I'm pretty happy about on this warm last day of March.
Staff was informative. Asked for a good Bourbon recommendation and they were all over it. Quality seemed good though this is take it or leave it. No dust on beers. I did see an Ipswich growler in the cooler and wondered when that arrived. I'm always suspicious of growlers at stores...

University Wine Shop is located on Mass Ave between Harvard and Porter Square.
The room is rather small and square with wine dominating almost the entire place. Coolers at the back and side hold the beer as well as chilled wine and other assorted drinks.
The beer selection is decent, but pretty small. Basic macros, micros and common imports in 6 packs dominate the coolers. Singles run across the top of the coolers and are mostly a mixed bag of a few Belgians, common imports, Harpoon 100-barrel series, etc.
This place barely makes the grade for being a BA worthy liquor store. Basically its your average hole in the wall liquor store with a somewhat decent selection of craft beers. A nice quick stop if you live around the corner and want more than miller lite, but not worth going out of your way for.
