From 22oz bomber to Hess imperial pint glass on 6/26/12
*From notes
-- Thanks to cayenne for this one --
A: Clean golden. A good pour yields a big 2.75 finger white head. As I get to the bottom of the bottle, a big amount of sediment clouds the beer. The best part of the appearance is Port's patented sticky head, lacing and collar. Just mountainous.
S: Damn. Explosively juicy West coast fruit. Massive mounds of fresh pineapple. I'm also getting a heavy quantity of freshly cut pine, too.
T: Jesus, is this is intense. In fact it's so intense it comes off almost like rubbing alcohol. It's so damn bitter, yet it's lacking the onion quality I find in a lot of bigger, agressive hop-forward beers. Instead, it's hot and way too bitter. It goes beyond most any DIPA I've had. Oh, and it's hot with boozy alcohol to boot.
M: As expected, the feel is great. It's properly dense and thick. The complexity is top shelf.
O: Everything is here, everything but the proper flavor profile, that is. I'm certainly a hophead, and a big one at that. But I can't imagine many of us who would take more then a few ounces of this massively hopped creation. Worth trying to be sure, but once is more then enough.

1 pint 6 fl. oz brown glass bottle with standard pressure cap served into a conical Guinness pint glass in me gaff in low altitude Los Angeles, California. Bottled 5/16/2012. Expectations are high given the brewery.
Served refrigerator cold and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.
A: Pours a half finger head of beige colour, okay thickness, no real cream, and average retention - which is actually somewhat impressive considering the 10.00% ABV. Colour is a hazy yellow-orange.
Sm: Oily hops, pine, slight citrus, and clean malts. No alcohol or yeast comes through. A mild strength aroma.
T: Oily hops with some pine and citrus. No alcohol comes through. No yeast. An interesting build, but rather simple. Not the rounded diverse hop character I'd expect from a good DIPA. Clean malts underlie. Balanced but too simple. Lacks complexity or subtlety. I like it.
Mf: Oily, smooth, and wet, with some coarseness about the climax. Surprisingly light on the palate. Fairly thick.
Dr: A drinkable little DIPA, especially for the high ABV. I'd try it on draught, but it's a bit underwhelming regardless. Not the quality of beer I'd expect from Lost Abbey.

a- hazy dark hued orange ale with a decent head (2 fingers +) that hangs around for a bit. strong retention.
s- LOTS OF HOPS!!! this beer is almost two months old too!!! bottled 5/16 and still comes through with lots of sticky, piney, orangey, bitter hops. just beautiful.
t- piney and strong. sorta the same as the nose. just blows you out on hops. im loving this!
m- mouth coating. nice carbonation. goes down smooth.
o- port brewing is always good for a hoppy beer. this one is no exception. recommended if you like good cali style hop assults...

*22oz bomber with standard pint glass
A: Port Anniversary pours a hazed yellow peach color. Nearing golden. Produces a massive thick snow white cap of head with some really astonishing stay. Finally reduces down to a film as it succumbs to the atmosphere leaving chunky globs of stick down the glass.
S: Smells of dank pines and orange slice backend with some sugary pale malts. There are lesser aromas of grapefruit met with soft floras and some bright fruity esters noted.
T: Taste is of big orange fruit and resounding pines. There are some nice tropical notes of mango mixed with a bit of apricot. Nicely bittered yet uncommonly smooth for a 10% DIPA. Malts are restrained and offer up a dry sugary cracker component. Has a bit of heat on it with some noticeable alcohol on exhalation. Tasty and resinous with hops.
M: Feel is medium-full yet very smooth and frothy in texture. Hop oils are resinous and saturate the palate. Real drying finish gives a lighter perception to the overall body.
D: This is a fine DIPA holding up at six weeks. Very drinkable at the big 10% ABV mark. Real big hops, juicy and flavorful, with good balance and finesse. Not sure if the Anniversary brews are of the same recipe but this was better than I recall years past...a bit like a cranked up Mongo. Recommended.

Yet another big Double IPA offering from Port?!? Who-duh thunk it?!
Poured from the tap to a snifter a bright glowing orange, white head starts at about a finger, ending up a slight cap while leaving some lace.
The scent's strength is on the weaker side, but there is hints of a palate assault to come. Lots of pungent piny and grapefruit hops with a tiny bit of malt.
Taste is better, and indeed assaulting. Huge hops here, lots of pine sap, grapefruit, tangerine pulp, grassy, backed by slight caramel malts. Some alcohol presence as well make this one giant beer.
Big mouthfeel, highish carbonation, some booze, definitely a sipper.
Somehow I knew exactly what this beer would be like before having it...though good, it is extremely similar to all the other super hoppy ~10% DIPAs from Port.

Appearance. Pours a hazy yellow gold with almost two fingers of thick, off-white head that leaves some great bands of lace.
Smell. Pine sap and pineapple, some toasted grains and a bit of yellow grapefruit.
Taste. Pine, pink grapefruits, some lightly toasted light malts. Alcohol is fairly well hidden, considering the big abv at least. Lots of lingering pine sap and citrus rinds.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full bodied with low+ carbonation.
Overall. A big ipa, yes indeed.

Poured from a 22-oz. bomber into a pint glass. Color was golden pale orange. Tons of head, probably four fingers. White cloudy frothy head. Good retention on the sides.
Good smelling beer right from the get-go. Got lemon citrus hops. Also tropical fruits like pineapple or melon. Lots of pale ale notes. Grains, wheat.
Tasted pretty similar to the nose, which was a good thing. Only just with a bit more alcohol. Got that citrus lemon hops mixed with the pale ale notes. Pineapple, mango, melon. Bitter alcohol heavy on the tongue for an aftertaste.
Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Strong, lingering alcohol finish.
A pretty good beer overall. The smell was by far the best quality. Super strong, but way too foamy.

A: The beer is very cloudy yellow in color and has lots of particles visible floating in suspension near the bottom of the glass. It poured with a quarter finger high off white head that died down and left lots of lacing on the surface and a ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: There are strong aromas of tropical fruits and citrus in the nose—mango seems to stand out in particular.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste is dominated by flavors of tropical fruits and citrusy hops. A strong amount of bitterness is present.
M: It feels medium-bodied and very crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. There is a bit of dryness in the finish.
O: This is a very intense beer, but it provides a lot of interesting aromas and flavors, especially those of tropical fruits.

A: Pours a super cloudy golden yellow in color with a moderate to heavy amount of particles in suspension. The beer has a finger tall light beige head that quickly reduces to a thick film covering the entire surface of the beer with a thicker patch and a thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Significant lacing is observed.
S: Very heavy aromas of tropical and citrus hops - lots of pineapple, mango, lemon, and orange.
T: The flavors of the hops and the bitterness are quite aggressive in this beer - lots of pineapple, mango, orange, and lemon. There is a very light hint of malt sweetness underneath all the hops but the flavors are kind of one-dimensional.
M: On the fuller side of medium bodied with moderate to heavy amounts of carbonation. Some light dryness in the finish.
O: Alcohol is very well hidden in this beer but the hops and bitterness are just too aggressive (intense) for this to be an easy drinking or sessionable beer. So aggressive that the beer is kind of harsh. I enjoyed trying it but once was enough...more of a special occasion kind of beer.

22oz bottled on 5/16/12.
Tawny and cloudy, this could pass as a Saision. A finger and a half head retains its presence throughout. Strong hop aroma, but they keep it light. Lots of lemon citrus with some floral notes and a hint of pine mingle well with the light white bread malt. The malt brings out a bit of the citrus in the hops as well. Taste starts out smooth, with a barely there malt presence that gets knocked out of the spotlight quickly by pine, bark, and grassy hops. Turns very bitter quickly, and sticks with you on your whole palate, coating the mouth. The bitterness is present for a while, but not throbbing and abrasive like some DIPAs can be (especially at this ABV). Mouthfeel is balanced, finish is very dry.
To say this is hoppy would be an understatement. I think they somehow learned how to make a malt out of hops. What's truly remarkable is how balanced this is, considering the IBUs must be around 1,000. Not for every day consumption, but a truly hoppy beer for a truly awesome Anniversary.

On tap. Pours a slightly cloudy golden amber with ne finger pillowy cap on top that sticks around a while and leaves lots of lacing. The aroma is big pine, sugar cookie, some grapefruit, dankness, and some caramel. The taste has a lot of initial sweetness with some pine and dank hops. There is also sugar cookie and a bit of caramel. The finish has really strong bitterness and leaves some lingering pine. Medium-full body. Medium carbonation. A bit too sweet, but the bitterness does balance it.

Appearance: Amazingly, this beer is fully carbonated, excessively so. It pours a pale golden-amber hue topped by a massive, sticky, lasting head that rises over the rim of the glass. The first pour is largely clear, with subsequent pours growing more cloudy.
Smell: Initially this smells like chalk and prickling gas. Definitely overcarbonated. The nose improves a lot as the CO2 settles out. Hops come to the forefront, and they're quite juicy and tropical, with a grassy, herbal undercurrent. Malt is non-existent.
Palate: A ton of carbonic acid up front, which eventually dissipates after a lot of swirling. Sharply resinous, bitter and dry. A bit chalky and herbal, too. This is ridiculously dry for 10%, almost too dry, but the hop flavors are quite nice. Spicy and zesty with a lot of bitter citrus rind and grapefruit flesh. Booze is fairly well hidden, but the beer still comes off a bit harsh, due in part to the dryness and huge bitter bite that's pervasive from start to finish.
Overall: I suspect this is better on tap - bottle conditioning seems to have chewed up too much of the residual sugar in this beer, leaving nothing to balance the astringency of the hop bill. It's a good beer despite its flaws, but I won't be picking up another bottle.

22oz bottle dated 5/16/2012 so pretty fresh. I've been avoiding this anniversary beer for years because I heard it was flat. Port has apparently fixed that because the head on this thing was massive, extremely fluffy, just huge. Bright orange but hazy with the big pillow on top. Smell is big juicy hops, pineapple, tropical fruit, slight note of bread. Taste is a little bit of alcohol which makes this astringent, big hoppy flavor here but the astringency distracts me. Overall, a solid west coast DIPA but maybe just a hair too much alcohol, if this was 9% it would probably be tits.

Had this on-tap at Falling Rock Taphouse in Denver. Received in a pint glass. The menu listed this at 11% ABV.
4.0 A: Lightly hazed dark orange color. Small white head that leaves full on lacing.
4.5 S: Big, huge citrus. Tons of mango, pineapple, and orange. Light breadiness. This is all hops and they are extremely powerful. Booze is reasonably well hidden.
4.0 T: Again, huge top taste. Moderate bitterness. Loads of pineapple, mango, and orange. One dimensional, but that's the point I suppose.
3.5 M: Heavier medium to heavy body. Good moderate carbonation. Moderately creamy.
4.0 D: Not an everyday beer for sure, but tasty and worthy of an anniversary.

A: poured into a Duel Tulip to a hazy golden orange with a two finger slightly off white head and solid retention
S: smells of citrus, pineapple, tropical fruits, and a bit of caramel. West coast nose for sure
T: tropical fruits up front with some sweet caramel. a bit of piney earthy hop in the middle that lingers to the end. Malt base struggles to maintain a presence and balance. Swallow brings more tropical fruits, a bit of alcohol and slight sweetness. Slight mandarin orange like sweetness on the finish after a couple sips.
M: carbonation builds to be prickly, slightly oily from the hops and a not quite heavy mouthfeel. It feels slightly viscous but not over the top.
O: a well built hop bomb with some small semblance of balance in the loosest sense of the word. A great beer that any hop head will certainly enjoy.

Poured from a 22oz bottle (Bottled On Date of 4/19/12 into a 12oz Vapeur Cochonne high-stemmed tulip glass.
A- Pours a hazy, tangerine orange with a marginal, 1-finger worth of head.
S- Tropical fruit sweetness (pineapple, peach, mango, apricot)...very inviting.
T- Much like the nose, sweet tropical fruits...overwhelming pineapple with hints of peach, mango and ruby red grapefruit. The malt backbone keeps the hops in check without things venturing into astringency. Very well done.
M- Although I would certainly enjoy a bit more carbonation, there is just enough to support the rather hefty body of this Imperial IPA.
O- Worlds above Port Brewing's Hop-15...more complex, as it is a hop-forward beer with better carbonation. An intense Imperial IPA that deserves some attention. Cheers.

Pours a hazy light gold color with a huge off white head.
Aromas are of hard candies, citrus, mostly orange, and sugars. Nice smelling beer.
Taste is bitter right up front, then settles into a nice mixture of hop and light malt flavors. Crackers, biscuit, lightly sweet, with some dry mineral and citrus hop bitterness on the finish. Nicely balanced, flavorful, but not over the top.
Mouthfeel is good, crisp, clean, and dry. Just about what you'd expect from a big DIPA.
Overall, better than the sum of its parts. Hoppy and dry, but surprisingly drinkable. Better than I remember last years version.

Smell: loads of caramel and pine are easy to detect.
Taste: caramel, pears, grapefruit, pine, and a bit of alcohol create a well balanced DIPA. Hop bitterness is agressive yet not overt.
Mouthfeel: medium-heavy bodied beer. Lightly crisp to start, smoother and very dry at the finish. Long lasting aftertaste here.
Overall: this is a very quaffable beer despite the higher alcohol content. Worh looking for and enjoying.

22oz bottle poured into a DFH snifter. Attempted to leave most of the yeast in bottle. Bottled on 4/29/12.
Pours a slightly hazy orange color with little head, likely due to the gentle pour. Aroma is hoppy, but not overwhelmingly so. I detect citrus and pine notes.
First sip is sticky, with an initial dense sweet flavor, transitioning into a firm hoppy bitter flavor, with strong lingering bitter finish.
Its almost like there is two beers in one here. The initial flavor is soooo sweet, and then the beer does a complete 180 and smacks you hard with bitterness. The hops bring out a real grassy note to the beer.
I will say, with all the competing flavors going on with this beer, the alcohol is well hidden, but the strong bitterness keeps this one a sipper for sure.
Overall, pretty good. Maybe a little rough around the edges with the sharp transition of flavors, but still a nice complex and hoppy brew.

Poor Port Brewing. They have been getting slammed lately for everything from big ugly floaties to poor carbonation levels to bottle dating to....you name it. I love Port Mongo. One of the best DIPA on the market year in and year out. After the Hop 15 debacle I started to wonder if there were issues. So today when I grabbed one of these Anniversary Ales off the shelf at my local WF I did wonder if there were issues that hadn't been resolved.
Apparently the issues are being resolved. This brew pours a gorgeous hazy orange. The head is thick, at least two fingers worth of sticky dense cap that leaves insane sticky curtains of lace as I drink down. The nose is ripe mango, tangerine, and red grapefruit, fantastic nose. The Flavors are in tandem with the nose, huge resinous grapefruit, oranges, mango and apricots with just the right touch of sweet maltiness on the back end to keep the huge hop profile in check. The 10% abv is scarily tucked away no where to be found, proceed with caution.
The mouth is insanely gripping, bitter hops, pine resin, dry but worthy of that next sip, so good.
Bravo Port, faith restored. This is a damn good DIPA, PERIOD !

A: A finger and a half of tight, barely off-white head. Hazy, unfiltered, but translucent amber. Heavy lacing.
S: Fruity tropical hops. Yum. Bitter resin. Excellent! My kind of DIPA.
T/M: Hot damn. This is good. Sinuous fruit, drying hops, thrumming alcohol, sweetish malt. Tropical, piny, well-balanced, excellent DIPA. Full-bodied, thick, and rewarding. Hella tasty.
O: Highly recommended. A fantastic double IPA. I would drink again and again. A model of the style.

On Tap at The Sidecar Bar.
A- I got a 1/2 inch of white fizzing foam that left after time. Some lace tries to stick but does not succeed. This one has a copper orange color to it.
S- A whole lot of hops and a malt backing to counter balance. This gives of a very pungent tropical citrus type of smell. Some alcohol in this 10%er. Getting pine and grapefruit from this with a bit of a sweet backing. Amarillo seems to be bursting.
T- The hop varieties used give off an over whelming grapefruit sense with and and not a lot of earthy flavors to back it, west coast for sure. This is hoppy and very bitter beer with malts to back. 6th while not hot gives off a semi warming sensation with the 10%, while retaining the hop bite and the malt sweet, ya dig. Pine barrens.
M- A step above Medium bodied with some warming quality from this 10% brew. This is extremely hoppy and very malted as well, you know what it is. Port has been stepping up in the carb game even though it's still not greatly carbed, but it is big beer and the yeast may not have been as strong as expected.
D- This is a hopbomb in all sense of the word so if thats not your thing look elsewhere. 6th has a balanced hop flavor came from many varieties of the plant giving citrus and pine. At 10% one draft is good with driving and all, but I could drink more.

Poured from tap at TJs in Paoli into a snifter glass.
A: A light to medium copper color with a one finger white head. Lacing is full but it does not last.
S: Real citrusy and tropical with grapefruit, pineapple, mango and some lemon zest. Some slight pine and bready malt.
T: The citrus is the show here. Nice blast of grapefruit, pineapple, mango, lemon and slight grassy tones. There is some bready malt there but make no mistake about it, this is all about the hops. Finish is slightly bitter but very dry and prickly. Nice. Alcohol does warm the throat but no way it's 10% warm. I've had prior Port Anny brews that were an alcohol mess, but not this one, the alcohol is blended perfectly. Hop heaven.
M: Medium, prickly, resinous, slightly bitter with some alcohol. Nice lasting finish and nice carbonation (should mention this since it is a Port beer).
O: I thought this was a great beer and a true hopheads dream. I think they are finally learning how to do their Anny beers as they seem to get better each year.
If you want a balance DIPA, stay away. If you want the sheer joy of hops just totally overcoming all aspects of a beer, drink this one. Hops-a-plenty, the way a good west coast DIPA should be.

On-tap at Kelleher's (man it's been a while). 12 oz. in a goblet (wtf) on May 25th, 2012.
A - Standard DIPA appearance, relatively clear golden coloring with a twinge of head and little retention. Good lacing. Totally blame the bar here, the glass is completely incorrect.
S - A bit dank, resinous pine and sap. Some underneath citrus and a little bit of tropical fruit. Peculiar burnt caramel note that seems atypical.
T - A touch of front palate sweetness from the malt bill than bombardment of pine cone bitterness. Cashews transition in a touch of bread and sweetness near the back. Very unbalanced, as I may have expected, but the bitterness seems much more unnatural than what I've had from Port previously.
M - Semi-dry finish, high carbonation, medium body.
D - Not memorable beyond west coast hoppyness, which felt a bit overdone and not complex enough in this instance.
