On tap at The Surly Goat in West Hollywood, CA.

Pours a hazy orange with a foamy bone colored head that settles to a thin cap on top of the beer. A foamy curtain of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of citrus fruit, citrus zest, and some grapefruit juice aromas. Taste is much the same with an alcohol kick on the finish. There is a mild hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with some solid aromas and flavors that make it easy to drink.

A: The beer is very cloudy yellow in color and has lots of particles visible floating in suspension near the bottom of the glass. It poured with a quarter finger high off white head that died down and left lots of lacing on the surface and a ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: There are strong aromas of tropical fruits and citrus in the nose—mango seems to stand out in particular.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste is dominated by flavors of tropical fruits and citrusy hops. A strong amount of bitterness is present.
M: It feels medium-bodied and very crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. There is a bit of dryness in the finish.
O: This is a very intense beer, but it provides a lot of interesting aromas and flavors, especially those of tropical fruits.

Appearance: pours a cloudy orange color with a one inch head that falls quickly.

Smell: loads of caramel and pine are easy to detect.

Taste: caramel, pears, grapefruit, pine, and a bit of alcohol create a well balanced DIPA. Hop bitterness is agressive yet not overt.

Mouthfeel: medium-heavy bodied beer. Lightly crisp to start, smoother and very dry at the finish. Long lasting aftertaste here.

Overall: this is a very quaffable beer despite the higher alcohol content. Worh looking for and enjoying.

First had: on tap at TJ's, Paoli, PA

It was a choice between this and the Van Viven IIPA for the ending of my lunch session, and the bartender recommended this one. And it was a good choice, plus it kept me in America.

Poured a slightly hazy copper-amber hybrid color with a cap of soft white head that retained well and left streaky lacing on the glass. Great aroma of fresh hops, citrus, tropical fruit, pine resin. There was a definite bready malt background here, but the beer was clearly hop-dominant (expected, of course), with flavors of orange, grapefruit, pineapple, touches of white grapes. Great example of West Coast IPA greatness. Medium body, a bit sticky, alcohol is decently hidden in the taste, but about halfway through, I started to FEEL it. Oh boy. Mellow out before driving. Very nice beer overall.

On tap at Lost Abbey.

A: Dark orange and slightly hazy. Inch of beige foam.

S: Spicy grapefruit with light mango notes. Orange blends with nectarine and earth. Malt reminds me of sweet bread with a dash of caramel.

T: Moderate piney bitterness with grapefruit rind notes. Orange, tangerine, and grapefruit flesh. A little bread and biscuit. Dry bitter resinous finish.

M: Medium body with moderate carbonation.

Overall: In the vein of the previous anniversary beers. A nice big hoppy Imperial Pale Ale/Double IPA.

1 pint 6 fl. oz brown glass bottle with standard pressure cap served into a conical Guinness pint glass in me gaff in low altitude Los Angeles, California. Bottled 5/16/2012. Expectations are high given the brewery.

Served refrigerator cold and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: Pours a half finger head of beige colour, okay thickness, no real cream, and average retention - which is actually somewhat impressive considering the 10.00% ABV. Colour is a hazy yellow-orange.

Sm: Oily hops, pine, slight citrus, and clean malts. No alcohol or yeast comes through. A mild strength aroma.

T: Oily hops with some pine and citrus. No alcohol comes through. No yeast. An interesting build, but rather simple. Not the rounded diverse hop character I'd expect from a good DIPA. Clean malts underlie. Balanced but too simple. Lacks complexity or subtlety. I like it.

Mf: Oily, smooth, and wet, with some coarseness about the climax. Surprisingly light on the palate. Fairly thick.

Dr: A drinkable little DIPA, especially for the high ABV. I'd try it on draught, but it's a bit underwhelming regardless. Not the quality of beer I'd expect from Lost Abbey.

This one was a part of cmrillo’s 40 Beers* @ 40 Birthday Bash! Shared by cmrillo at his own party! Served from bottle into a Mikkeller taster flute. Poured yellow-orange with a half finger white head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, banana, bread, and spice. The flavor was of sweet malt, banana, spice, bread, and earth. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a fairly good brew. I really didn’t know what to expect from this one going into it. However, I did find a fairly nicely balanced brew when it came to the aroma. On the flavor it was a little off-putting though as the spice note dominated most of the brew and made it a little less enjoyable overall. Worth trying if you get the chance to grab it off the shelf.

Appearance: Amazingly, this beer is fully carbonated, excessively so. It pours a pale golden-amber hue topped by a massive, sticky, lasting head that rises over the rim of the glass. The first pour is largely clear, with subsequent pours growing more cloudy.

Smell: Initially this smells like chalk and prickling gas. Definitely overcarbonated. The nose improves a lot as the CO2 settles out. Hops come to the forefront, and they're quite juicy and tropical, with a grassy, herbal undercurrent. Malt is non-existent.

Palate: A ton of carbonic acid up front, which eventually dissipates after a lot of swirling. Sharply resinous, bitter and dry. A bit chalky and herbal, too. This is ridiculously dry for 10%, almost too dry, but the hop flavors are quite nice. Spicy and zesty with a lot of bitter citrus rind and grapefruit flesh. Booze is fairly well hidden, but the beer still comes off a bit harsh, due in part to the dryness and huge bitter bite that's pervasive from start to finish.

Overall: I suspect this is better on tap - bottle conditioning seems to have chewed up too much of the residual sugar in this beer, leaving nothing to balance the astringency of the hop bill. It's a good beer despite its flaws, but I won't be picking up another bottle.

A: nice large thick head with excellent lacing on a murky golden with brown hues body.

S: sweet hop aroma with candy sugar, citrus, light pine and floral notes.

T: this one is very bitter, grassy and resiny from start to finish. there is some candy sugar sweetness and nice malt presence as well but these take a back seat to the hops.

M: medium body and moderate carbonation.

Overall: nice balance but the hops favored bitterness too much. The alcohol was fairly well masked. I just wanted a little more balance in the hop content.

A - Pours with one finger of white foam on top of a hazy, golden body. The head settles rapidly and leaves decent lace.

S - Pine and spicy hops with thick bread notes.

T - Sweet, bready malt up front with pine and spicy hops in the middle. Finishes with more sweet malt, a hint of light toffee, and moderate bitterness.

M - Medium tck body, moderate carbonation, and a slightly sweet finish.

D - Not bad, the hop character isnt as pungent as I want it to be but the malt it nicely balanced and it remains drinkable. It is ok, but port certainly makes better DIPAs.

App- Tangarine orange and some peach yellows in the glass. Soft sunset colors. A two finger white head with solid cling and well formed cling.

Smell- Big pungent hops but not bitter. Highly concentrated with damp citrus in the tropical sense. A bit of guava, a bit of mango. Really clean and hoppy.

Taste- I like it. Its a hoppy beer without being a punch in the face bitter. The booze is hidden but still there and a bit of damp citrus with a creamy mango flavor with a small bitter. Not like a tripel but a little thick and a peppery/spicy

Mouth- A full medium body with a medium carbonation level. A ton of hoppy goodness with a bit of a creamy finish.

Drink- I liked it, just needed a bit more to balance it out. The fruit and creamy was a nice addition to this beer. Was glad that it wasnt so bitter I didnt want to drink it.

On Tap at The Sidecar Bar.

A- I got a 1/2 inch of white fizzing foam that left after time. Some lace tries to stick but does not succeed. This one has a copper orange color to it.

S- A whole lot of hops and a malt backing to counter balance. This gives of a very pungent tropical citrus type of smell. Some alcohol in this 10%er. Getting pine and grapefruit from this with a bit of a sweet backing. Amarillo seems to be bursting.

T- The hop varieties used give off an over whelming grapefruit sense with and and not a lot of earthy flavors to back it, west coast for sure. This is hoppy and very bitter beer with malts to back. 6th while not hot gives off a semi warming sensation with the 10%, while retaining the hop bite and the malt sweet, ya dig. Pine barrens.

M- A step above Medium bodied with some warming quality from this 10% brew. This is extremely hoppy and very malted as well, you know what it is. Port has been stepping up in the carb game even though it's still not greatly carbed, but it is big beer and the yeast may not have been as strong as expected.

D- This is a hopbomb in all sense of the word so if thats not your thing look elsewhere. 6th has a balanced hop flavor came from many varieties of the plant giving citrus and pine. At 10% one draft is good with driving and all, but I could drink more.

A: Pours a super cloudy golden yellow in color with a moderate to heavy amount of particles in suspension. The beer has a finger tall light beige head that quickly reduces to a thick film covering the entire surface of the beer with a thicker patch and a thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Significant lacing is observed.

S: Very heavy aromas of tropical and citrus hops - lots of pineapple, mango, lemon, and orange.

T: The flavors of the hops and the bitterness are quite aggressive in this beer - lots of pineapple, mango, orange, and lemon. There is a very light hint of malt sweetness underneath all the hops but the flavors are kind of one-dimensional.

M: On the fuller side of medium bodied with moderate to heavy amounts of carbonation. Some light dryness in the finish.

O: Alcohol is very well hidden in this beer but the hops and bitterness are just too aggressive (intense) for this to be an easy drinking or sessionable beer. So aggressive that the beer is kind of harsh. I enjoyed trying it but once was enough...more of a special occasion kind of beer.

Firstly notable for an extraordinary expanding head, tall, firm, and permanent. The brew is heavily carbonated. It's a pale orange color, containing a maelstrom of violently agitating bubbles and floaties. The smell is of piney, grapefruity hops and stone fruit. It's very hoppy in smell, completely overwhelming the faint pale malt aroma. The taste is bitter and herbally hoppy with some underlying fruitiness and mild malt. Strong bitter finish, long and lingering. It hides its alcohol very well. Nice.

Two wants? Wow. I remember back in the old days when these anniversary beers were much sought after. Now, with a good IPA available every block, not so much, huh? On tap at North River Tavern.

Pours as lovely as all Port's brews, orange sluice with a dollop of whipped cream on top. Smell is a bit less than I expected; more sweet malts, less bitterness. Not bad, just not as aggressive as I recall from previous anniversaries.

Port Brewing's 6th Anniversary IIPA doesn't wow me like its ancestors; which to say, it isn't excellent. Big malt T-Rex takes a chomp out of my tongue & leaves me frowning. The hops rush in - citrus, growling bitterness, mango - but they're stomped by the 'Rex. Sweetness overwhelms the hops & this begins to slide into amber territory. Huh.

Not the awesome beer I recall from yesteryear, but still good. It might sound like I think it sucks but really, it's only in comparison. Wouldn't turn one down any day.

Had this on-tap at Falling Rock Taphouse in Denver. Received in a pint glass. The menu listed this at 11% ABV.

4.0 A: Lightly hazed dark orange color. Small white head that leaves full on lacing.

4.5 S: Big, huge citrus. Tons of mango, pineapple, and orange. Light breadiness. This is all hops and they are extremely powerful. Booze is reasonably well hidden.

4.0 T: Again, huge top taste. Moderate bitterness. Loads of pineapple, mango, and orange. One dimensional, but that's the point I suppose.

3.5 M: Heavier medium to heavy body. Good moderate carbonation. Moderately creamy.

4.0 D: Not an everyday beer for sure, but tasty and worthy of an anniversary.

22oz bottle dated 5/16/2012 so pretty fresh. I've been avoiding this anniversary beer for years because I heard it was flat. Port has apparently fixed that because the head on this thing was massive, extremely fluffy, just huge. Bright orange but hazy with the big pillow on top. Smell is big juicy hops, pineapple, tropical fruit, slight note of bread. Taste is a little bit of alcohol which makes this astringent, big hoppy flavor here but the astringency distracts me. Overall, a solid west coast DIPA but maybe just a hair too much alcohol, if this was 9% it would probably be tits.

The Lost Abbey

A deep copper and amber with orange edges. Huge foaming off-white head that lasts and lasts. Not as much lacing as I would have expected.

All sorts of citrus elements in this beer--guava, mango, orange, grapefruit--very aromatic.

A tongue buckling bitter blast of a beer! Hop bitterness galore! Unbalanced to its core--this is hops hops hops! As advertised: delicious and bitter hop bomb! Also some citrus and sweet elements as well, but bitterness steals the show. If that's what you dig, seek this one out!

A relatively heavy mouthfeel and a slight biting alcohol heat on the finish.

A delicious Port DIPA. Big citrus aromatics and huge hop bitterness.

A - Murky apricot/orange, big head that lasts a long time. Lots of lace.

Pours a hazy light gold color with a huge off white head.

Aromas are of hard candies, citrus, mostly orange, and sugars. Nice smelling beer.

Taste is bitter right up front, then settles into a nice mixture of hop and light malt flavors. Crackers, biscuit, lightly sweet, with some dry mineral and citrus hop bitterness on the finish. Nicely balanced, flavorful, but not over the top.

Mouthfeel is good, crisp, clean, and dry. Just about what you'd expect from a big DIPA.

Overall, better than the sum of its parts. Hoppy and dry, but surprisingly drinkable. Better than I remember last years version.

Bottle shared by Steve, 650ml into a tulip.

Hazy orange with a nice offwhite head. Good retention and light lace. Nose has peach, mango, pine and light herbal character. Sweet malts, but hops are the show. Tate is bitter from the start, mango, orange, pineapple otherwise. Real bitter in the finish, and leafy/herbal in that regard. Medium feel and carbonation. Intense bitterness stands out for me here, a very nice beer but I would've like to have tried this a tad fresher.

This beer pours a nice pleasant clear orange in color with a small pillowy white head that leaves some decent lacing.

Aromas begin with a nice hop profile composed of citrus and grapefruit, with a lot of tropical notes as well; mainly pineapple with some apricot and peach. Some malty sweetness with a tad bit of alcohol in the background, but pretty solid otherwise.

The taste begins with a little bready/caramel maltiness but immediately you are assaulted with intensely hoppy grapefruit and citrus flavors with some lesser pine notes. Pretty sticky and resinous, with a little alcohol kick in the finish. The malt tries to make more of an appearance as this warms but the hops assert themselves and make sure they are center stage.

Mouthfeel is medium in body with a medium level of carbonation. Dry dry sticky finish from the combination of intense hopping and the high ABV. Alcohol becomes a little prevalent as it warms which detracts a little and is my only complaint for this beer. Bitterness also lingers more than I usually like.

Overall this is a decent Imperial IPA that is better served in a small size servings because it is a tad too astringent and alcoholic. Flavor profile overall is a tad too bitter (in the grapefruit dept) for my preference, not to say it's not a bad beer, it just misses the mark on a few key checkpoints for me to be great.

Bottle opened on 5.30.12.

A - Pours a cloudy medium orange with a one inch yellowish head. Good retention.

S - Lots of tropical fruit - Pineapple, mango, orange, and lemons.

T - Bitter leafy-grass, then some subtle tropical fruit follows.

D - Good carbonation and a medium body.

O - Smells great, but the taste doesn't quite follow suite.

Poured a slightly hazy orange with a thick and sticky off white head.

The smell is mostly citrus notes with a bit of alcohol and a touch of bready malt sneaking through.

The flavor is very one sided, a bit of sweet and bready malt with a hint of alcohol up front that is quickly dominated by the strong juniper bitterness that just overtakes everything else.

The mouthfeel is heavy and very oily.

Not really a hop bomb, more of a bitter bomb, gets kind of boring quickly, a tough bomber to finish.

Whilst at 2Bros Tap Room I split a bottle of Port Brewering's 6th Anniversary IPA with a good friend. The beer pours a cloudy copperish amber color with thin slightly off-white head that did not lace all that much. The scent was mostly malt with subtle backdrop of pine and citrus hops. The taste was a big power of bitter hops with strong malt background the pine and citrus come true. With every double monster IPA at 10% ABV the malt base generally dictates the taste of the beer. The mouthfeel was full body with subtle carbonation. Overall it was a good DIPA, but certainly not teh best I have had.

The beer was bottled in May-2012.
