Bottled 5-16-12.

Five months old now but this is just fantastic. Cloudy golden color that I love, with very nice head, though dissipates quickly. Incredibly fragrant, with massive blast to the nose of multiple flavors, some sweet but mainly sour, but very appetizing. A full meal is in store here. Taste is superb, combining both malt and hops, but emphasizing a nice blend of the latter. Similar to Mongo but slightly sweeter and bigger. This is a huge, potent beer, almost too potent, but it lights up the palate like Mozart or the Beatles light up the speakers. Bright, complex, and a party in the glass.

A 220z bottle bottled on date 5/16/12

A - A cloudy sediment filled bright yellow, with the biggest head I have ever seen! 3 fingers at least, and sticky lace left all over the glass. Perfect looking brew!

S - Huge hop nose! Heavy on the citrus front. But bitter as well. Grapefruit

T - Tasty! A good balance between the citrus and bitter hops. Grapefruit.

M - Medium to full bodied, high carbonation. Smooth

O - As good a west coast DIPA out there. Highly suggest grabbing this one. It is still amazingly fresh, 6 months old

Poor Port Brewing. They have been getting slammed lately for everything from big ugly floaties to poor carbonation levels to bottle dating to....you name it. I love Port Mongo. One of the best DIPA on the market year in and year out. After the Hop 15 debacle I started to wonder if there were issues. So today when I grabbed one of these Anniversary Ales off the shelf at my local WF I did wonder if there were issues that hadn't been resolved.

Apparently the issues are being resolved. This brew pours a gorgeous hazy orange. The head is thick, at least two fingers worth of sticky dense cap that leaves insane sticky curtains of lace as I drink down.The nose is ripe mango,tangerine, and red grapefruit, fantastic nose. The Flavors are in tandem with the nose, huge resinous grapefruit, oranges, mango and apricots with just the right touch of sweet maltiness on the back end to keep the huge hop profile in check. The 10% abv is scarily tucked away no where to be found, proceed with caution.

The mouth is insanely gripping, bitter hops, pine resin, dry but worthy of that next sip, so good.

Bravo Port, faith restored. This is a damn good DIPA, PERIOD !

Bottled on 5/16/2012, purchased today at Whole Foods in Redondo Beach, CA. Served up cold in a Duvel tulip.

A - Might have shaken it up a bit on the car ride back, but the head is outrageous. At cap level when opened and when poured takes up about 2/5 of my glass. Off white head sits on top of an opaque orange body. No lacing, but splatters of head residue on the glass.

S - You can certainly smell the hops in this one. Oh boy, fruity hop fragrance (citrus, lemon, piney, pineapple).

T - Citrusy hops upfront, malt in the middle, and a little bitter on the finish. Tastes of grapefruit, lemon, pine, mango, peach, and pineapple all surrounding a soft and almost undetectable caramel and milk chocolate undertone. Serious hop bomb, I'm burping up hop gas every couple sips.

M - Dry with good/moderate carbonation.

O - Pleasantly suprised by the hoppiness despite the 7 month age. I'm really glad I tried this one and if you haven't already and have the chance don't hesitate. As far as an in-your-face hoppy beer, this far exceeded my expectations.

Pours a cloudy golden yellow - looks hearty. Easily two fingers of head at pour - creamy - retains the head well - a good layer of head remains on top even after a few minutes of settling. Smells of piney, floral hops and slightly bready. Taste is thick - head remains. Bitter piney hops up front stays strong but yields a slight caramel sweetness towards the back.

5/16/12 bottle I bought about a couple months ago at Grapevine Liquors in Denver, marked down from $8.99 to $5.99. "Great but fading fast now," said the main beer dude (Chris?). One of the things I like about this shop is they mark down big hoppy beers as they get older. Consumer sentiment is so in the nature of "gotta drink this within minutes of release or don't bother" that I guess he has no choice...

Anyhow I forgot I had it and so another couple months of alleged decline occurred before I noticed it in the back of the fridge last night and said "What the hell?"

Ratings are as noted, I'll just say that although the hop aroma may be a little muted the hop flavor is still big and piney with a little citrus lurking in the background; that the bready malt is right where I'd like it to be, present but not by any means "in balance" with the big hops, even after all this time, the alcohol at 10% is unnoticeable (in a blind tasting I'd probably have estimated it at about 7-7.5%) and that I'd drink all of this I could get at $5.99 a bottle if he still has any, which I don't believe he does.

A LOT of yeast settled to the bottom, ended up in my third pour (I use a little 25 cl Delirium Tremens taster glass on bombers and 750s, works out to 3 glasses each), no biggie to a homebrewer like me

Ten month old DIPAs, if marked down like this, may be my new thing.

A: poured into a Duel Tulip to a hazy golden orange with a two finger slightly off white head and solid retention
S: smells of citrus, pineapple, tropical fruits, and a bit of caramel. West coast nose for sure
T: tropical fruits up front with some sweet caramel. a bit of piney earthy hop in the middle that lingers to the end. Malt base struggles to maintain a presence and balance. Swallow brings more tropical fruits, a bit of alcohol and slight sweetness. Slight mandarin orange like sweetness on the finish after a couple sips.
M: carbonation builds to be prickly, slightly oily from the hops and a not quite heavy mouthfeel. It feels slightly viscous but not over the top.
O: a well built hop bomb with some small semblance of balance in the loosest sense of the word. A great beer that any hop head will certainly enjoy.

Poured from a 22 ounce bottle into an Allagash cervoise glass.

A: A finger and a half of tight, barely off-white head. Hazy, unfiltered, but translucent amber. Heavy lacing.

S: Fruity tropical hops. Yum. Bitter resin. Excellent! My kind of DIPA.

T/M: Hot damn. This is good. Sinuous fruit, drying hops, thrumming alcohol, sweetish malt. Tropical, piny, well-balanced, excellent DIPA. Full-bodied, thick, and rewarding. Hella tasty.

O: Highly recommended. A fantastic double IPA. I would drink again and again. A model of the style.

220z into glass

A - dull orange color, off white head with heavy lacing down glass, considerable sediment in bottle (bottled on 4/1912) still very fresh though!

S - Hops, citrus, sweet fruit (pineapple), a little bread

T - Awesome IIPA, first sip i got hit with hops, but after drinking some more the other flavors really came out. Tons of hops, citrus and pinnapple, light malt. Huge bitter hops finish which I love. 10% ABV is almost un-tastable

M - Medium-High carbonation with Medium-light body. A little higher carbonation and lighter body than my "ideal" IIPA, but both these are prefect with the flavor profile in this beer.

O - Great beer, very happy that it still tastes so fresh even with the 4/19/12 bottle date. Mouthfeel and taste are more reminiscent of a single IPA, great fruity flavors and light body for a 10% ABV brew.

a- hazy dark hued orange ale with a decent head (2 fingers +) that hangs around for a bit. strong retention.

s- LOTS OF HOPS!!! this beer is almost two months old too!!! bottled 5/16 and still comes through with lots of sticky, piney, orangey, bitter hops. just beautiful.

t- piney and strong. sorta the same as the nose. just blows you out on hops. im loving this!

m- mouth coating. nice carbonation. goes down smooth.

o- port brewing is always good for a hoppy beer. this one is no exception. recommended if you like good cali style hop assults...

I had this beer on tap at Lord Hobo in Boston MA poured into a tulip glass.

A: Hazy Golden Straw Hue, Passes Some Light, White Head, Great Lacing

S: Resin, Citrus, Mild Malts

T: Resin, Citrus, Malty

M: Decent Carbonation, Medium Boded, Dry, Semi Bitter

Overall, another solid IPA from Port.

First had: on tap at TJ's, Paoli, PA

It was a choice between this and the Van Viven IIPA for the ending of my lunch session, and the bartender recommended this one. And it was a good choice, plus it kept me in America.

Poured a slightly hazy copper-amber hybrid color with a cap of soft white head that retained well and left streaky lacing on the glass. Great aroma of fresh hops, citrus, tropical fruit, pine resin. There was a definite bready malt background here, but the beer was clearly hop-dominant (expected, of course), with flavors of orange, grapefruit, pineapple, touches of white grapes. Great example of West Coast IPA greatness. Medium body, a bit sticky, alcohol is decently hidden in the taste, but about halfway through, I started to FEEL it. Oh boy. Mellow out before driving. Very nice beer overall.

Poured from tap at TJs in Paoli into a snifter glass.

A: A light to medium copper color with a one finger white head. Lacing is full but it does not last.

S: Real citrusy and tropical with grapefruit, pineapple, mango and some lemon zest. Some slight pine and bready malt.

T: The citrus is the show here. Nice blast of grapefruit, pineapple, mango, lemon and slight grassy tones. There is some bready malt there but make no mistake about it, this is all about the hops. Finish is slightly bitter but very dry and prickly. Nice. Alcohol does warm the throat but no way it's 10% warm. I've had prior Port Anny brews that were an alcohol mess, but not this one, the alcohol is blended perfectly. Hop heaven.

M: Medium, prickly, resinous, slightly bitter with some alcohol. Nice lasting finish and nice carbonation (should mention this since it is a Port beer).

O: I thought this was a great beer and a true hopheads dream. I think they are finally learning how to do their Anny beers as they seem to get better each year.

If you want a balance DIPA, stay away. If you want the sheer joy of hops just totally overcoming all aspects of a beer, drink this one. Hops-a-plenty, the way a good west coast DIPA should be.

As promised, reviewing this year's anniversary ale in May.

Pours murky gold, with some light brown and some orange in the light. A huge light tan head leaves plenty of lace, and is capped by fluffy mounts of slowly dissipating rocky foam.

Smells of orange, pineapple, grapefruit pith, and barely detectable malts, which assert themselves more as it warms.

Tastes of great bitterness, pithy and strong, malts almost come through in the middle, but they are pounded into submission by the hops. More pith on the finish.

Feel is medium bodied, with a huge punch, boozy, though not 10% boozy. Drinkability is not high on this one, as it's reminiscent of Hop-15.

This is the first hoppy bear from Port I have tried that didn't have the ugly chunky sediment in it, and I was happy for that. All that being said, the flavor isn't as complex as last year, but still excellent.

A: Pours a hazy (from dry hopping) dark orange/red with a decent 2 finger high off-white head that drops down to about a finger high. Very nice head retention and lacing throughout entire beer.

S: Very nice and clean resin hop aroma mixed with a sweet caramel malty aroma

T: A little confused with the overt malt sweetness and the high hop bitterness at the end. These two should counteract each other. It still has a good malty caramel sweetness, but it finished off on a rather bitter note that lingers on your palette.

M: Medium-to-heavy mouthfeel. carbonation is spot on and perfect for such a high ABV.

O: Good beer, but beta hop bitterness and malt sweetness need to be a little bit better balanced. Might be better with some slight again...even though it's an IPA.

Firstly notable for an extraordinary expanding head, tall, firm, and permanent. The brew is heavily carbonated. It's a pale orange color, containing a maelstrom of violently agitating bubbles and floaties. The smell is of piney, grapefruity hops and stone fruit. It's very hoppy in smell, completely overwhelming the faint pale malt aroma. The taste is bitter and herbally hoppy with some underlying fruitiness and mild malt. Strong bitter finish, long and lingering. It hides its alcohol very well. Nice.

On Tap at The Sidecar Bar.

A- I got a 1/2 inch of white fizzing foam that left after time. Some lace tries to stick but does not succeed. This one has a copper orange color to it.

S- A whole lot of hops and a malt backing to counter balance. This gives of a very pungent tropical citrus type of smell. Some alcohol in this 10%er. Getting pine and grapefruit from this with a bit of a sweet backing. Amarillo seems to be bursting.

T- The hop varieties used give off an over whelming grapefruit sense with and and not a lot of earthy flavors to back it, west coast for sure. This is hoppy and very bitter beer with malts to back. 6th while not hot gives off a semi warming sensation with the 10%, while retaining the hop bite and the malt sweet, ya dig. Pine barrens.

M- A step above Medium bodied with some warming quality from this 10% brew. This is extremely hoppy and very malted as well, you know what it is. Port has been stepping up in the carb game even though it's still not greatly carbed, but it is big beer and the yeast may not have been as strong as expected.

D- This is a hopbomb in all sense of the word so if thats not your thing look elsewhere. 6th has a balanced hop flavor came from many varieties of the plant giving citrus and pine. At 10% one draft is good with driving and all, but I could drink more.

Poured from a 22-oz. bomber into a pint glass. Color was golden pale orange. Tons of head, probably four fingers. White cloudy frothy head. Good retention on the sides.

Good smelling beer right from the get-go. Got lemon citrus hops. Also tropical fruits like pineapple or melon. Lots of pale ale notes. Grains, wheat.

Tasted pretty similar to the nose, which was a good thing. Only just with a bit more alcohol. Got that citrus lemon hops mixed with the pale ale notes. Pineapple, mango, melon. Bitter alcohol heavy on the tongue for an aftertaste.

Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Strong, lingering alcohol finish.

A pretty good beer overall. The smell was by far the best quality. Super strong, but way too foamy.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle date 4/19/12 into a duvel tulip.


A: pours a beatiful hazed orange with half a finger of a slightly of white head that dissapates quickly buy leaves nice sticky lacing.

S: tropical fruit.... Pinneapple, mango, grapefruit, a wonderful blend of citrusy hop deliciousness... A touch of grain and hop bitterness as the beer warms. You can also start to pick up the alcohol note through the pine as the beer warms.

T: citrus and pine, delicious.... Much like the nose.... Pinneapple, a touch of orange, mango, mixed with a nice touch of resiny pine on the finish.... An alcohol note in the finish hidden well by the pine but deffinatly there.

M: slick and almost oily with a light/medium tight bubble brisk carbonation that you can feel on the roof of you mouth if you hold it in there long enough... Overall the mouthfeel works very well with this brew. Dry an bitter on the finish... With a bit of a linger, but nothing obnoxious.

O: a great dipa, tons of great hop flavor, all blend together nicley, very well rounded, a must try... I'll deffinatly grab a few more of these.

Pours a hazy light gold color with a huge off white head.

Aromas are of hard candies, citrus, mostly orange, and sugars. Nice smelling beer.

Taste is bitter right up front, then settles into a nice mixture of hop and light malt flavors. Crackers, biscuit, lightly sweet, with some dry mineral and citrus hop bitterness on the finish. Nicely balanced, flavorful, but not over the top.

Mouthfeel is good, crisp, clean, and dry. Just about what you'd expect from a big DIPA.

Overall, better than the sum of its parts. Hoppy and dry, but surprisingly drinkable. Better than I remember last years version.

A - Murky apricot/orange, big head that lasts a long time. Lots of lace.

S - Very sweet malt center, hops surround the smell.

T - Not as malty as smell, nice hope finish.

M - Medium body, good carbonation, nice balance and clean finish.

D - I like this beer. I would like to try it in the bottle.

Appearance: pours a cloudy orange color with a one inch head that falls quickly.

Smell: loads of caramel and pine are easy to detect.

Taste: caramel, pears, grapefruit, pine, and a bit of alcohol create a well balanced DIPA. Hop bitterness is agressive yet not overt.

Mouthfeel: medium-heavy bodied beer. Lightly crisp to start, smoother and very dry at the finish. Long lasting aftertaste here.

Overall: this is a very quaffable beer despite the higher alcohol content. Worh looking for and enjoying.

Had this on-tap at Falling Rock Taphouse in Denver. Received in a pint glass. The menu listed this at 11% ABV.

4.0 A: Lightly hazed dark orange color. Small white head that leaves full on lacing.

4.5 S: Big, huge citrus. Tons of mango, pineapple, and orange. Light breadiness. This is all hops and they are extremely powerful. Booze is reasonably well hidden.

4.0 T: Again, huge top taste. Moderate bitterness. Loads of pineapple, mango, and orange. One dimensional, but that's the point I suppose.

3.5 M: Heavier medium to heavy body. Good moderate carbonation. Moderately creamy.

4.0 D: Not an everyday beer for sure, but tasty and worthy of an anniversary.

Off white head that's stiff like egg whites over a cloudy tangerine body.
Hope flower and citrus nose - very fresh.
Mango and bread sticks with serious resin, lemon rind, and pine needle hops creeping in from the start. A bit of caramel and pineapple as it warms.
Limoncello and tangerine finish and aspirin linger, with a veggie undercurrent to the hops.
Hot, medium, salty, oily, creamy yet dry, a bit of chew.

Bone dry and simple. With the heat and a white pepper-herbal quality to the hops, echoes a tripel on some sips. But really just San Diego all the way.

The orange amber colored body body looked very cloudy, and the head was creamy and craggy, and crowned above the rim of the tulip. The smell was subdued for the style, with a citric floral hop presence hidden under the thick foam. The taste was a good balance of citric and herbal hops and sweet and sticky malt. The beer lacked the in your face bitterness of the really good DIPAs, and instead provided a more laid back session. The body was quite thick for the style, starting approach on the Barleywine levels. This was a good beer, but I liked Mongo better as a DIPA.
