On tap at The Los Abbey/Port tasting room in San Marcos, CA.

Pours a slightly hazy gold with an off-white head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Thick chunks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of tropical fruit, citrus fruit, and citrus zest. There is also a slight funky aroma that I am getting. Taste is pretty awesome and is also of tropical and citrus fruit with some citrus zest on the finish. There is a medium bitterness on the palate after each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer but it tastes better than it smells.

Poured from a draft into an imperial pint at Hooley’s in La Mesa, Calif., on Jan. 23. Color was hazy pale orange. About an inch of head. Light white lacing on the top. Good looking circular film on the side.

Smelled pale grainy notes first. Surprisingly also got citrus notes in there, too. Grainy and grassy as well.

Taste was similar to the nose. Pale grainy malts up front, giving way to citrus (couldn’t pick one fruit) after. Very bitter and that stayed on my tongue after.

Medium body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Bitter finish.

Pretty much what you would expect from a decent pale ale with the addition of citrus notes.

On-tap at Lost Abbey

Pours a clear golden color with a finger of white head. A really nice fruity hop aroma. Lots of grapefruit and citrus as well as some sweet tropical fruit notes. A hint of bread in the background. The flavor is more of the same. Light pine bitterness to go with pineapple, grapefruit, and orange peel. Mild bread flavor and sweetness. Light bodied with medium carbonation.

Imbibed at the Port Brewing tasting room on 12/31/2011.

Poured a pale tawny yellow with thin, but sticky head. Lots of orange and lemon zest aroma with a full bodied pale malt in the background. Lemon zest, golden biscuit, and bitter, floral hop oil make up the bulk of the taste. The hops are delicate at first, but come at you with a vengeance and become very bitter. Feels a bit oily and watery, finishes dry.

This started better than it finished. It felt like a wet hop beer that was left in the proverbial oven too long. I don't know if it was dry hopped, or had too many hops in the boil, but what started as a delicately hopped beer turned into a bitter, oily Pale Ale that I was happy to finish. Good attempt, but there are definitely better out there.

On tap at Lost Abbey.

A: Yellow orange and slightly hazy with a finger of white foam. Lacing clings to the glass.

S: Bright tangerine, grapefruit, and orange flesh with notes of pith. Malt imparts a distinct graininess. I get some Meyers lemon and a little mango.

T: Tangerine and orange pith with a medium dry bitterness. Malt is grainy and somewhat biscuity. The finish is dry with lingering grapefruit and general citrus rind. No alcohol is evident. There's a mild astringency near the end.

M: Lower medium body with upper medium carbonation.

Overall: A good hoppy ale. The grainy malt profile is uncommon for the brewery and the beer seems a little green at this point, but it's still enjoyable.
