Enjoyed in a shaker pint at Pizza Port OB.
Deep burgundy and perfectly clear with highlights of light orange. One finger of creamy sand-colored head sticks to the glass in thick frosting-like walls.
Citrusy, tropical hops permeate the nose. Grapefruit, lime, mango, brown sugar, caramel. Sticky-sweet, like good syrup.
Grapefruit again leads the flavor, this time with his fruity friends pineapple, mango and grass. There’s a very respectable amount of caramel that rises to balance the hops, and he’s also brought buddies: sweet orange juice and toasted bread. Orange peel and burnt sugar clean up after the others have gone.
Fizzy medium carbonation causes the brew to bubble up aggressively and increases the lightness of the body, which starts at a soft medium-light and makes its way into light territory by the time I swallow. Medium bitterness and just a hint of fumes in the nose.
Rhino Chaser has lip-smacking hop strength that’s just a little over-corrected by big red sweetness. Still, a worthy pint.

Growler
Thanks for opening this with me, NoSignsOfPain!
Gorgeous imperial amber that pours out a clear, dark, nearly crimson color with a thick, light khaki colored head that leaves messy lacing all the way down the glass.
Expressive citrus aroma, mild pine, bread, and a hint of alcohol round things out nicely.
The flavor follows the aroma, with dank citrus and pine flavors combining with freshly baked bread and caramel. There's very little alcohol presence.
Medium bodied with high carbonation.
A delicious imperial amber, though not quite as good as the best in class.

Thanks to NoSignsOfPain for sharing this one at the post Bruery Reserve Society party bottle share!
Pours a clear amber with a tan head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy splotches of lace form on the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus zest, and citrus fruit. Taste is of malt, citrus zest, and herbal hops. There is a medium bitterness on the palate after each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with some nice aromas and flavors.

Enjoyed as part of a flight at the PP in Ocean Beach on 12/31/11. Review from notes.
Appearance: Deep amber, almost more brown than red.
Aroma: Nose is roast and sweet with a great bouquet of hops flavors. Tropical fruit notes as it warms a bit.
Taste: Hoppy and caramelly. Balanced. Sweet upfront with a pleasant bitterness that grows throughout the glass.
Mouthfeel/Drinkability: The heavy/medium body does right by the flavors in this. The hop oils cling to the palette in all the correct ways causing this beer to gain complexity as you drink.
Overall: This one grew on me as a drank it. Almost too sweet at the start, the hops gradually came out in stronger ways towards the end.

On tap at Pizza Port Ocean Beach. The snifter does wonders.
A: Deep crimson with a fearsome off white head that rises up two inches from the body. Retention is excellent, color is great, clarity is great, and lacing is scattered.
S: Hops are nice and aromatic, imparting notes of orange flesh, nectarine, and grapefruit. Notes of pine are equally prevalent. Caramel does well in balancing the hops. Very nice.
T: Flavor is well balanced, with prominent caramel malt notes providing a touch of sweetness to the upper moderate bitterness. Notes of orange flesh and pith are evident, accompanied by grapefruit as well. Pine is most evident in the dry and bitter finish, and there's a touch of astringency and some booze in the terminus. Midpalate sweetness seems to increase as the beer opens up.
M: Medium body, upper moderate carbonation. Mouthfeel is dry and sticky with some astringency and warming.
Overall: A very good Imperial Red, with ample hop flavor to back up the bitterness and a nice caramel malt foundation. Very drinkable for the ABV and not at all oppressive as the name might imply.

On-tap at Strong Ale. Brewed at Ocean Beach.
A: The pour is a dark amber color with a nice off-white head forming on top and spotty lacing.
S: A pretty nice hop character to this one. A great grapefruit and orange rind aroma with some caramel malts and toffee. A moderate breadiness and a touch of alcohol.
T: Starts off with juicy, slightly bitter grapefruit, tangeringe, and maybe a bit of grass. The hops die away somewhat quickly, which was a touch disappointing, but the malt backbone is pretty good. A bit of bread and some moderately sweet caramel flavors. There is a decent bitterness to this one as well, which I enjoyed.
M: The body is medium to full with a nice lively carbonation and a decently dry finish for the style.
D: Pretty good beefed up red ale. I find this sort of beer to be hit or miss, but this was pretty good, and my first beer from PP OB.
