I had this on-tap at sour and bitter.
Appearance: Pours an opaque black color with a layer of tan head that fades to a ring around the pour.
Smell: Mild roast with some dark chocolate and vanilla notes. Sweet from the malt but a bit too mild.
Taste: Sweet up front with mild roast. I'm getting the chocolate and vanilla notes I found in the smell. The roast builds to the finish which is a touch bitter.
Mouthfeel: Medium to thick body with tingly carbonation and a dry finish.
Overall: This was a nice stout and a welcome break from the acidity of the lambics. Good balance and depth, I would have it again.

On tap at Pizza Port Solana Beach. Let's see what this GABF gold medal winner is all about.
A: Deep brown, near black, with crimson highlights near the edges when held to light. The head is light brown and enormous. Retention is outstanding, taking over 5 minutes to fade, leaving thick sheets of foam on the glass.
S: I detect some pine. Roast is present, melding with dark chocolate, licorice, and molasses. There's a little citrus, perhaps orange flesh. Smells very nice. Coffee lingers in the background.
T: Dark chocolate blends with traces of milk chocolate. Molasses accompanies licorice. Roasted grains are evident. Bitterness is at a lower moderate level. Sweetness is balanced by bitterness, and the beer shows balance between the various flavor elements. Alcohol is masked. The chocolate profile is excellent. Coffee is very light.
M: Lower full body with medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is sticky and creamy.
Overall: A very good Stout. I can see why this did well in competition.

On Tap
Pizza Port
Solana Beach, CA
Black with brown highlights at the edges of the glass. Sticky, messy lacing down the glass.
Aromas are of roasted malt, burnt coffee, and dark chocolate. An incredibly rich, almost smoky, aroma.
While I think the burnt coffee aroma is nice, it's a slightly overpowering flavor. There's plenty of hop bitterness, chocolate, and molasses as well, but the forefront flavor is one of burnt coffee and I think it takes away from an otherwise delicious stout.
Medium to thick bodied.
A unique, smoky, coffee imperial stout.

Enjoyed On-Tap poured into a Pint Class at Pizza Port-Solana Beach on 05/21/11
Reviewed from notes
#6
This beer poured black with light brown edges as little light was able to pass through. One finger of tan head that settled into half a finger. The head was thick and foamy and left nice lacing. Great looking beer. The smell was mostly of roasted malt, burnt coffee and piney hops, with a little toffee. The taste is dominated by intense coffee with a backbone of roasted malt, chocolate, raisin, and burn coffee grounds. This beer finishes with a slightly bitter earthy hop characteristic. It is full-bodied, velvety, medium carbonated and has no alcohol burn.
Overall, this is one of my favorite Pizza Port offerings. I go back to this beer each time they have it on.

On-tap at Pizza Port Solana Beach.
Nose is heavily roasted malt with a tinge of chocolate and coffee. Pour is deep black with a 1/3" mocha head.
Medium thick mouthfeel that has a lingering bitterness. This is one of the most delicious stouts I've had in a while and the alcohol is nearly imperceptible. Bittersweet chocolate dominates the tongue with roasted coffee in the finish. Would definitely drink again.

Had a glass of this one on a recent trip to the Solana Beach Pizza Port for dinner with the family. Poured an deep, inky black color, with a nice light brown head on top. Good aromas of smoke, coffee and hops. On the palate, I get a good amount of warming alcohol, along with some nice roasted malt and a bit of hop. A good offering.

On tap @ Pizza Port Solana Beach on 3/19/10. Served in a pint glass.
Pours a dense black, with a near finger of creamy burnt mocha colored head. Retains with a smooth layer of froth, that leaves sticky swathes of foam down the sides of the glass. The aroma is very floral and earthy green (and to a lesser extent piney) with hops at first, which blows up in the front of the nose, before a crunchy wave of dark roast and coffee asserts itself. Sticky sweet notes of chocolate and toffee hang on the edges but the hops really control this, with pine (which really comes out more as this warms) and spice coming out strong across the back of the nose.
Hops and burnt bitterness are out in full force in the taste, with a good bit of resins, spice, and citric flavor being sharp up front, before giving way to burnt roasted malt character and coffee. There is some chewy chocolate and caramel sweetness present but it is just barely keeping things in check, with it finishing with all burnt and bitter roasted dryness that lingers with leftover pine and spice. Wow, this is a tough finish to shake. The mouthfeel is full bodied, with a sharp prickly carbonation on top (where all of that hops and bitterness lies), while a thick layer of chewiness sits underneath with all of that heavy sweetness and roast. I'm getting some warmth in the finish, but otherwise the alcohol here is very well hidden.
Black, brash, and bad ass, just like the man himself, this is one hopped up American Stout that will strike down your palate with great vengeance and furious anger.
Recommended food pairings: Big Kahuna Burger or a Royale with cheese.
