Had this beer at Brouwer's the other day after looking at it longingly at a recent Lost Abbey Tasting.

The beer pours a nice dark brown with some red to it. very appealing looking.

The smell is very complex and has hints of the rosemary and honey it is brewed with as well as fall fruits.

the taste is superb, sour but with an intense depth of flavor this honestly is one of the best beers i've had in a long time. Extremely complex and amazingly drinkable, I would be more than happy to sit back with one of these on a regular basis. It has rich fall fruit tones of light cherry, fig.

Very easy to drink and a great beer. I strongly recommend trying it or seeking it out.

Aroma: Strong sourness fills the nose with characteristic Brettanomyces 'horse blanket' aroma. Fruity esters also accompany the Brett with tangerine notes and subtle grapefruit. Alcohol spice is present but not forefront, the Brettanomyces dominates every aspect of this aromatic blended brew. Sour aroma has to be one of the strongest I have experienced in a Wild Ale.

Appearance: While the color boarders on black, the true nature is a dark brown with some haze. A strong push of carbonation bubbles holds up a rocky and steady nut-brown head. Even several minutes after pouring the head remains strong, what has faded thickly holds to the side of the glass.

Flavor: Like a sour candy your palate isn't ready the tart character present in the first sip of this beer. Moving past the burning sourness the beer presents an earthy and woody character. Tart cherries and green apple also push across the tongue with a very light touch of dark fruit. There is a yeasty phenolic character that is hard to pick up at first but seems to hint at a green banana flavor I have not tasted in a beer before. It's subtle, but adds a nice complexity going into the finish. The beer finishes mostly dry but with slight stickiness around the edges.

Mouthfeel: An incredible sourness grabs your jaw muscles at the first sip of this beer. Incredibly puckering at first the body is light to medium with high carbonation. The carbonation quickly cleans the palate into the drying and sour finish. The sourness will bite you at the back of the throat toward the end.

Overall: Pushing the boundaries of sourness this beer dominates the aroma and palate with focused and biting Brettanomyces character. Since I like this style so much it's exhilarating to drink, but if sourness isn't your style then this is no where to start. The oak and wine characters blend together well but are still dominated by Brett. Carbonation could be backed off a bit to allow the malts to work their way onto your palate and build on the body just a touch more.

Served in snifter at Brouwer's during Big Wood, this was my favorite beer of the line-up by far, and there were some incredible beers there. Brouwers Imagination #2 is dark brown with a big bubbled collar leaving light lace.

Smell is fantastic. Complex and deep, sweet and sour, vinous.

Taste is also very vinous, raisin and chocolate, with a nice lactic tartness, particularly on the finish. There's also a hint of rosemary. Smooth and delicious.

Mouthfeel is slick and oily, although there's just enough carbonation.

Drinkability is exceptional, I loved this beer, and it went down very easily in spite of the high ABV (and price!). The sourness increases as it warmed, which I enjoyed. This brewery really does seem to only roll strikes and gutters, but they killed it here.

ark brown, very hazy and cloudy with a rich tan colored head. Excellent retention left behind thick coating side glass lace. Some light carbonation at first, but this quickly diminished. !

The first notes to come across were funky and sour, which were to be expected, however, letting this one warm up brought about all sorts of goodness. This one had to warm though to really let you appreciate all of the subtleties that were going on here. Rich notes of caramel and tart cherries, light notes of oak and woodsy like malts. rush of Brett funkiness in all of its glory, rich notes of fruit, cherries layered in on top of that with an almost toffee like flavor as the base

09 big wood at brouwer's. didn't know what to expect other than the sour part, when it came black, i was prepared for anything. has the appearance of a stout with a slightly offwhite head. smells quite sour - cherries, perhaps and a little alcohol. the flavor is lovely, the beer is not as thick as i thought it would be and is intensely flavorful, oaky, sour, cherries, perhaps a bit of vanilla, a little sweet. i don't know why we only ordered one of these. mistake.

Thanks to bgramer for the long time want. Poured into a snifter.

A: Opens with an emphatic pop, and a mass of foam begins a slow yet insistent rise toward the top of the bottle. I quickly grab hold of my glass and make ready as the liquid begins flowing. The color of the body is a deep brown with burgundy highlights. The brown head is two inches high and lingers for six or seven minutes. The foam clings to the glass in thick curtains. As I was typing this review I heard a noise in the fridge, a disturbance. I opened the door to find that the foam had redoubled its efforts and risen again, dislodging the wine stopper. Half the bottle was foam and it created quite the mess in the fridge. Luckily, only a few ounces were lost. This foam has a life of its own.

S: Tart and vinous, with notes of vanilla, wood, and bourbon. A moderate lactic presence is detectable, as well as an upper moderate acetic profile. The beer smells of black and red cherries, grapes, plums, raisins, faint rosemary, and figs. There are heavy currant notes. Malt is reminiscent of gingerbread and there's a very faint nutty element. Brett imparts subtle musty and earthy notes. This reminds me a bit of Cuvee de Tomme. No evident booze. Very complex and exceptional in every way. The beer was opened at 55 degrees, but as it opens up and continues to warm up, there's a nice interplay between chocolate and bourbon.

T: Opens with a moderate lactic sourness and a smooth upper moderate tartness. Upper light acetic notes are evident, and once again the fruit takes over, with notes of currants, sour cherries, grapes, prunes, raisins, and figs. There's a nice chocolate profile, and bourbon goes very well with the strong vinous notes. Brett is leathery and musty, and is more evident here than it was in the aroma. Finishes dry, tart, and fruity, with some acidity, tannins, and drying oak.

M: Medium in body with an upper moderate level of carbonation. Mouthfeel is dry, sticky, tannic, and lightly acidic.

Overall: An all around awesome beer if you're a fan of the blended strong dark sours. Highly recommended.

Re-Rate on 4/29/10 Bottle as part of epic sour tasting with callmemimckey. (transcribed from previous rating)

750 mL Pours dark burgundy with gigantic head. Aroma was so incredibly complex and varied all over the place as it warmed. Dominant aroma of port but also got hints of orange, rosemary, chocolate, coffee, apple, plum/raisin and the slightest hints of bourbon. Incredibly complex nose. Flavor has some mild sweetness, and some great earthy funk. Very thick, full bodied, much more approachable carb than the first time. I could put away a 750 of this no problem. As part of an epic tasting, this just barely edged out Cable Car for best of the night (10/4/9/4/19 4.6)

750 mL bottle at Brouwer's on 3/13/10 (personal 500th rating). Bottle popped and is an insane gusher (think 1/2 inch beer to 5 inches of head). Pours very dark ruby with huge cream colored head. Aroma of chocolate, cherries, prunes and pine. Flavor is nice rich chocolate sweetness, with a wonderful tart cherry and citrus. Finish is a fruity coffee bitterness, almost like a sour raspberry mocha. Medium mouthfeel with good carb, maybe a bit on the heavy side (as evidenced by gusing)Incredibly well-blended an d unique beer. Fantastic sour that isn't overpowering and incredibly drinkable. Review #100! Thanks to Ross for opening up this rare beauty

A: Slower gusher out of the gate, dark raisiny brown, with a gentle haze.

S: Whiff of tannin rich red wine, tangy fruits, faint bourbon and booze. What a powerful nose!

D: Dark grain, sour grapes, boozy figs and plum, robust merlot, gingerbread and chocolates. Tastes like someone took a bag of crystallized dark fruits, soaked them in bourbon and then used that to infuse an oud bruin.

M: Carbonation was a tad high but the mellow palate coating and long lingering fruity sweetness lend a luxurious feel to the rich flavor spread.

D: This is an absolutely wonderful blend, as the Seattle crew is wont to do. A masterful fusion of red wine, bourbon and tangy dark fruits.

Pours a dark brown with a touch of light white head. Very dark. Thick and bubbly. Smells tart and sour lots of sweet fruitiness. Tastes tart but not too acidic. Overall very enjoyable. Lots of cherry and port flavours. The tartness is perfect on this one. Great carbonation.

Had this at Brouwers Big Wood 09'. Snifter.

Poured with a nice little head. Color was very dark with blood red highlights when held to light. Very impressively dark for a sour.

Smell was woody, bourbon, sweet cherries, some sour funk, tobacco, some alcohol present.

This hit me with a "wow'" when I first sipped it.. A very nice blend of flavors, I detect some cuvee de tomme cherryness, maybe some bourbon angel share? Fruity malt flavors, some hotness from the alcohol (but not much), some hop bitterness at the end. It had a perfect level of brett sourness through out the sip. A sticky mouthfeel. Perfect level of Carbonation. Yum.

This is a beer worth seeking out. As with all the brouwers/bottleworks collaboration brews this blend is great. Wasnt sure of the ABV, but it seemed high. This will do very well with some age on it.
Bomb.

I've drank two bottles of this stuff, and it's an awesome under-the-radar sour. 750ml bottle poured into tulip.

Gusher warning!

A - Pours a combo of ruby red tinge and brown body. Def a darker sour. Has some light head, maybe half a fingers worth, that quickly disipiates into a few bubbles here and there.

S - Tart/sour notes right off the bat, some sour grapes, slight sweetness, and some medicinal/spice notes. A lot going on here, which really makes you break this one down and enjoy everything.

T - I call this "Cuvee de Tomme on steroids". It has the dark sour notes mixed with the honey sweetness, oak, and medicinal finish that I attribute to the rosemary. As with the nose, lots going on here. Sour, sweet, spice, funk, etc. All this combines into one awesome-tasing sour.

M - Light (closing in on medium) bodied, good light carbonation, dry finish.

D - One of my favorite sours as of late. Better then CdT but alas, a lot more rare. I don't know when I'll crack my next bottle open, but I'm already looking forward to it.

Received this brew from Sean9689 out of Chicago by way of St. Louis. Never heard of it until he sent it over and looking forward to trying it. Anything with Brandy Angles Share, Port Serpent's Stout and Red Wine Gift of the Magi (amongst others), has to be good right? Drank from my Ithaca Excelsior tulip.

Appearance- Pours a pitch ass black with a giant two finger light tan head that fizzles and purrs in my glass. A incredible cap and collar are maintained the entire beer along with TONS of thick rich lacing.
Smell- Sort of an earthy smelling tartness with a bit of a cherry vinegar thing going down. Not overly sour smelling but a definite bit zing. Some light green apples and maybe a tinge of leather or tobacco but that's about it. Just a funny looking beer considering the smell.
Taste- Starts with a somewhat earthy and somewhat fruity taste that is unlike anything I've tasted before. I'd swear there were cherries in here as there is a sort of tart cherry burst on my first sip. A bit of a tart green apple and a light red wine vinegar aspect. Woody and somewhat tannic, a light vanilla hides underneath along with some tobacco and grass. Maybe a touch of chocolate on the finish but it's earthy and very raw and almost bitter. A bit of alcohol does come into play as well.
Mouthfeel- Medium body with very aggressive carbonation. The bubbles are bigger than usual to and really makes the beer feel a bit sharper than it should.
Drinkability- I really dug this beer a lot. The sourness is super light and balanced and it makes for a really quaffable brew, especially for one that sits at 9.5%. The dark look of the beer really surprises you when you take a whiff and get a nice sour aroma. Especially since I was expecting more a dark woody somewhat sweet beer. Thanks much Sean, really enjoyed this!

Split a 750 mL bottle with my dad at brouwers in seattle, poured into small snifters. Reviewed 1/4/10.

Ar: Sour, rich dark fruit, lactic acid, cherry, red wine, raisin, faint spice, light bourbon, strong fruit, light earthy funk.

Ap: Very high carbonation, tons of large smooth tan head, epic retention, deep brown, thick lace

T: Raisin, plum, alcohol, tart, bourbon, pomegranate, rich and dark fruit, grape, light alcohol warmth, light caramel sweetness, very light earthy/funk character (overall the funk is pretty subdued), nice mild herbal qualities, very complex, most prominent taste is a raisin/dark wine/dark berry character with tartness, chocolate hints, nice wood character

M: High fine carbonation, medium body, smooth, light alcohol warmth/roughness as the beer warms

O: Excellent, the rich dark fruit is delicious, interesting character added by the bourbon, starts to get a little rough as it warms, but not to the point of being problematic

Big thanks to Sean for sharing this one last night. Served in a Hopleaf tulip glass.

A - Slow gusher alert. Lots of foam that dissipates quickly to a thin cap leaving behind a few spots of lace. Dark hazy ruby-tinged brown body.

S - Sour pediococcus, sour apples and cherries, lactic sourness, a touch of bourbon and oak, red wine vinegar, and perhaps the faintest solvent note. Not much obvious malt character, and the honey listed on the bottle isn't perceptible either. Still it's a lovely smelling dark sour.

T - Taste is very red wine vinegar heavy, with a touch of toffee and date sweetness that was a little surprising - perhaps this is the honey? Plenty of sour cherries, grapes, apple, etc., and a fairly tannic finish. Another 4.25ish beer, so I was perhaps overly critical of the appearance to balance things out.

M - Bubbly, a little grittier than I like, solid medium body that supports the "strong" (but unknown) ABV. Finish is dry and woody.

D - This was a nice diversion - even though the smell suggesting stomach-burning sourness the flavor was actually quite balanced, with a good mix of sweetness, acetic character, and dryness. I'd definitely have this one again.

The label describes a lot of similar components as Sinners' Blend '09 but this is much better.

Cork explodes out of the cage. Dark brown pour with a large head. Nose is meaty, raisins, red berries, some signature Lost Abbey brett, tight. Mouth is sweet rich, and malty. Plums, raisins. Very nicely done, tight brett funk and dark fruit sugars working together well here.

Opened this on September 30, 2011, to a huge pop. (The cork probably flew 40 feet into the air.) The beer began to slowly gush - 3 ounces poured into a HFS wine glass. From notes.

Very lively bubbles make their way up to a 1.5 finger tan head. The beer itself is a dark red-hued dark brown. "Plummy brown."

Tart, sour cherries; miscellaneous dark fruit / vinousness; lactic acid; toasted oak; and some caramel malts. I've had some 'meh' strong dark sours recently, but this was pretty well integrated, with surprisingly pleasant wild berry notes meeting the strong dark malt backbone, lactic acidity, and old herb earthiness.

Nicely tart and vinous: cherries, currants, and raisins, mostly. There's also a layer of sweetness comprised mostly by the bourbon, light soy, and Dr. Pepper/almond extract character. The backbone is what you would expect from a strong, dark sour, featuring a nutty, caramel, and chocolate maltiness. Definitely superior to the majority of dark sours I've had, even after almost two years. Tart above all else, though without the vomit-like notes one gets from something like Cuvee de Tomme, with surprisingly soft bretty undertones.

Medium-bodied with quite lively carbonation. It dances on the tongue.

A very interesting blend. I could easily imagine this as a successful Veritas release.

Bottle shared by GRG1313 at our sour and wild ales tasting on April 14, 2012. Thanks Richard.

The beer appears dark brown with crimson highlights and an off white head that leaves sparse lacing on the glass. The aroma is quite nice, with scents of tart cherries, wild yeast, oak. The flavor brings tart cherries and a pleasant, acetic character. Oak and brettanomyces have a strong presence as well. The feel is medium to full bodied with a long lingering, lip smacking tartness. This had been on my "wants" list for a long time. I'm grateful for the opportunity to try it.

Thanks to Richard for opening this bottle at our tasting on 1/31/10. This one is from notes.

A: The pour is a very dark brown color with some nice red highlights and a fluffy off-white head.

S: The nose is quite complex and I wasn't initially sure what to make of this beer. I pick up notes of raisins, cola, cherries, chocolate, and malt. In addition, there are some nice brett and oak aromas, but not overly tart.

T: The taste is equally interested. There are the same sweet malt and dark fruit characteristics that are present in the nose, but with a more noticeable tartness. Some sour cherries, brett funk and dryness, oak, bourbon, and alcohol.

M: A very full body with a lively carbonation that makes the beer feel even fuller on the tongue.

D: I'm not sure exactly what the alcohol content is on this, but it certainly lives up to the "strong" part of the name. That said, the beer is still delicious and I'm glad I have one via trade to sit on for awhile.

The bottle opened with a wisp of smoke, and paused before it decided to gush, giving the chance to catch it in a few taster glasses.

The beer was a dark, opaque brown in the center, fading into lighter mahogany at it's edges. Strong visible carbonation gave it a generous head of foam, that left sticky lacing at the edges of the glass.

The leathery, acetic, dark fruity aroma immediately reminded me of a favorite Oud Bruin, Haandbakk. There were spicy oak traces, cinnamon and apple butter notes, tannic and vinous. Flavors of dark grapes, plum, acetic balsamic, more oak, especially as it dried out in the finish. A moderately sour pucker gave it a nice zing, yet it was well integrated and balanced. The feel was soft and smooth with a fine level of micro carbonation. Overall this was a real winner that i'd seek out again. Thanks Sean!

750ml bottle from Andre, thanks!

A very promising disgorgement pop delivers with two inches of tan, dense foam and an unrelenting ascention of minute orbs of carbonation. Dark mahogany body with crimson edgework in the hips of the tulip glass. Torn sheets of lacing and a solid coating on the surface all the way through the glass.

Aromatics lead off with vineous and tannic fruit, light spice, ripe malt, balsamic vinegar, and red wine-steeped raisins. Hints of oak, bourbon, and crushed herbs follow through.

Medium bodied with a crisp, sharp mouthfeel. A bit lush and tacky.

A tart, sour, wine-like vineousity starts the palate along with balsamic-drizzeled soured fruit. Tart cherries, bourbon, red wine, oaky tannins, and a trace of charred cocoa follow through.

Finishes tart, vineous, boozy, and a bit oaky.

Well now, Tomme and the boys hit this one on the head. Extremely complex and fairly sour. Lots of barrel character here and the carbonation is rockin'. Reminds me of Earthmonk a bit too.

Pours dark brown with a bit of a crimson hue. The head is slight but leaves a decent amount of lacing. Nose brings forward some cherries and dark fruit along with strong lactic and acetic sourness and a bit of a woody note. Slight funk. The taste is sour fruits for sure with a bit of dark fruits and slight roast. Great feel with a nice sour to tart balance. Drinks very well and is a strong dark sour--I love this substyle.

Brouwer's Imagination Ale 2009. Corked and caged 750ml bottle generously shared by ipa247. Thank you, Jeff.

The cork rocketed out of the bottle as soon as I loosened the cage; I guess Tomme is trying to throw us off with the occasional over-carbonated batch. The beer is an opaque cola brown topped by three fingers of dense froth that settles very very slowly to a half-inch layer of foam. It's a bit murky, but the firm head makes for an attractive beer.

The aroma is complex and inviting. Dark vinous fruit, red wine, hints of balsamic vinegar roasted grain, light spiciness; this is balanced but complex.

Tart berries and vinous, wine-like fruit flavors are prominent. It's also mildly roasty and malty, with a bit of balsamic vinegar-like acetic acid. High carbonation cuts through the medium-full body and complex flavors, making this an easy drinker, though it's initially too effervescent. The finish is very vinous and tannic, reminiscent of cabernet sauvignon. As expected, this is very good.

The beer pours a dark brown color with a tan head. The beer looks about like Coca-Cola. The aroma is dark fruit and yeast. The flavor is tart dark fruit. The beer is not as sour as I was expecting but the tartness does meld very well with the darker malts to make a very good drink. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
