We pour a brew of rich coppery golden red coloring. It holds a two and a half finger head of beige colored bubbles, leaving patterned lacing as it recedes at a slower pace. A chill haze is noted in the absence of sediment, while carbonation appears moderate. The aroma is wrought with warm buttery malts, peppery and spicy alcohol, brightly citric and herbal hops, light caramels, tannic unsweetened tea, phenolic plastics, faint cedar smokiness, and faintly browned apples. With warmth we get juicy bubblegum esters, women’s perfume, and a strengthening of the alcohol. Our first impression is that the flavoring is rich with coppery, buttery malts, with surprising smoothness in contribution from the alcohol. The taste opens up with that buttery toasted malt, coppered metallics, light chocolatey depth, a sweet fruit of red cherries and pear. Herbal and citric hops are bittering and spicy, but give hearty freshness. The peak hits with toffee sweetness, bitter roasted malts, browned apple sweetness, coiny metallics, herbal and nectary hops, and spicy peppery alcohol. These blend and pull us to the finish which boasts of more caramel maltiness, soft toast, herbal and citric hops, tomato leafiness, faint woodiness, more stinging booze, mineral, malted milk balls, and drying baker’s yeast. The aftertaste breathes astringently of planty greens, chive, simple ale yeast, number two pencil, ethanol, black pepper, basil meatiness, and metallic molasses syrups. The body is medium to full, and the carbonation is light to medium. There is sticky slurp, smack, with softer cream and froth to the lip. Finishing pop is less noticeable due to this softness. The mouth is left astringently dried after this initial creaminess, and the hard palate feels a bit metallic and streaked. The abv is appropriate, and the beer sips easily.
Overall, what we enjoyed most about this beer was the robust start of the flavoring. We began with a nice, toasty, buttery blend of pale and caramel malts, with eventual depth, grown from the plastic and boozy inclusions. These helped to flesh out the meat of this brew, and to hold up against the bite of citric and earthy hops with its own sweetness. Both the nose and the mouthfeel remain soft throughout the tasting, contributing equally to the final picture. This beer is actually quite representative for the style and well executed.

Poured from 22oz bottle into Samuel Adams Perfect Pint glass.
Appearance: Cloudy amber color with a large orange-tinted head that dissipates slowly and leaves behind sticky spotted lace.
Smell: Sweet caramel malt with floral and citric hop aromas.
Taste: Begins biscuity and rounds out to sweet caramel malt flavor. Finish yields toastiness and herbal bitterness with a touch of bittersweet alcohol. The hop profile pushes this one into near-IPA territory. Also reminiscent of Stone's Arrogant Bastard and its ilk.
Mouthfeel: Medium to full, slightly chewy body with a dry finish.
Overall: A pretty good beer and a great beer for its style. Definitely a sipper at 9% ABV. Having this at 2pm may not have been the best idea.

Poured a beautiful amber with a nice one finger off white head. Scents of caramel malt, floral hops and a bit of alcohol. The flavor is strong, with a high hop bitterness, mostly piney but with some citrus notes, balanced by a malt sweetness, there's also a bit of alcohol on the finish. Very high in hop character, with malt keeping it manageable, but still very much a hop-head kind of beer. Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, with a thick, sticky feel, very good and akin to an American Strong Ale or a lower ABV barleywine. An excellent ale, it reminds me of Double Bastard, but with more hop character and less of the sticky sweetness.

From a 22oz. bottle. Poured dark red-amber in color with a decent off-white head.
Plenty of bitter grapefruit rind in this high IBU ale comes to the fore by the aftertaste, but has a significant malt base that tempers the hop onslaught up front. Suggestions of caramel, spruce and biscuit.
M: Medium+ body with a moderate level of carbonation.
O: More IPA than red ale, although there is a markedly red tone to its color. Irish red ale crossed with a West Coast IPA. Too much bitter grapefruit for my taste.

Wife stuck this in my stocking for christmas, Looked great when poured. had a nice medium red color. The smell was average. It was all downhill from there and then down the drain. This is not the the most hoppy beer i've had but mighty close. The mouth feel was fine, but the bitter aftertaste stuck with me after my next beer. if your a hop lover go for it. Otherwise go to something more malty

22oz bottle poured into a large mug
Pours rich red-amber with a humongous tan head. Lots of clumpy lacing. Fairly cloudy. Smell is hoppy and slightly roasty.
Taste is hoppy with a coffee and chocolate aftertaste. Lots of grapefruit rind flavor.
Mouthfeel is dry and somewhat gritty. Overall, this is pretty good.

22oz bomber...
eyes...
watch the pour, this one wants to escape even on an easy like a sunday night pour.... 3 fingers of head only that short because it ran out of glass to climb ! settles at a good clip, slow gurgles as it turns soapy with big bubbles consuming the smaller ones in this off white coat, the depths are murky and muddy here, somewhere the paint is light brown with hues of amber, mini old faithfuls of bubbles stream up from the glass bed keeping the head at a steady one finger.. nice looking brew.
nose...
dry grainy malt with a hint of sweetness, slight sense of the alcohol looming beneath the surface, some hop floral scent, overall a pretty subdued experience
taste etc...
the carbonation is bright and spiky, really fizzes in the mouth, some toasty malt flavors dominate on the sip and in the afterglow, around the edges are nice spicy hop notes and bitterness that lingers from some time, medium body really goes down smooth with the carbonation, easily drinkable but yet as I go on it seems to be packing more bitterness (a good thing to me), the bitterness keeps on building to a nice point, the beer never looses that malt front . Amazingly the ABV is hidden almost completely here, which can be dangerous, or good.. depending on where you are it.
verdict?
damn tasty but yet not unapproachable, it's the hot chick that likes football,. This is a really nice beer, not perfect but somehow hard to criticize... Worth keeping an eye out for especially if you like hopped up reds like say Lagunitas imperial red or the like.

Cloudy red beer with a soapy off-white head. The smell is a mix of spicy hops and an undercurrent of roasty malts. Some citrus and grass in the aroma. Caramel is distant. The taste is powerful...lots of warming and spicy hop bitterness. Some sweetness, but it's not really balanced. Full in body with a smooth feel. Doesn't hide it's abv, but it is still quite drinkable. All in all, this one is pretty good.

The Beers of California
#11
Bottled Date: 7/3/12
A: Pours copper brown with a towering, resilient khaki head.
S: The nose is lively, floral, piney and aromatic; heavy on fresh hopiness, with some, but little sugary maltiness. Very activating but pleasingly so.
T: Bitter, spicy hop notes come in the mid palate; piney and earthy with a lingering citrus zest. The bittering hops overwhelm the sweet malt backbone and dominate the palate. Flashes of sugary brown bread come through but overall the hops storm through leaving little taste buds to discern anything else in this brew.
M: Some smothiness but slightly thin with good, coating linger. Appropriate carbonation which keeps thing lively.
O: A beer for the select that truly appreciate hops and the strength and intensity of flavors rather than subtlety and complexity. If the idea of being attacked by a shark could be bottled, then this is that brew.

Picked up a bunch of quality singles today and this is the first to get a proper review! Poured into a snifter.
A - A cloudy/hazy mahogany and ruby hued body with a nice frothy beige head. Pretty good lacing here. Beautiful brew.
S - I am getting caramel sweetness, some earth notes, vanilla, citrus and some toasted malts. Again, excellent.
T - Lots of hoppy grapefruits dominate upfront, although they resend rather nicely with some caramel, pine and booze behind. Ends with a bit of warmth for a red, which while rather unusual, this is standing at a whopping 9%.
M - A medium body, although a bit thin, characteristic of a red. Not a ton of malts forming a backbone here, it does have a bit of a chewy character to it.
O - A bit overly aggressive if I must make a complaint. It is interesting being heavy on the hops and almost "bleeding" alcohol. I find it interesting for sure but I'm not sure that I would revisit.

Pours a beautiful, hazy, nearly translucent amber-copper color. A very stubborn taupe, fluffy, foamy head forms. As it dissipates in an excruciatingly slow manner, suds cling to the glass like foamy glue. Toffee aroma with emerging notes of grass and pine. Medium-bodied, mildly creamy mouthfeel. Big caramel, a touch of emerging licorice, and some lingering hop heat late. Very good beer.

When poured into a pint glass, the color was of a hazy amber brown, with a medium amount of tan foam and a load of lace on the side of the glass. The smell of roasted malts and hops were evident in the aroma of this Red Ale. The taste of roasted malts and crystal hops were evident in the aroma. Also, there were a fair balance of sweetness/bitterness in this finish of this ale. Even at 9% alcohol, there was not that alcohol bite. Nicely balanced and nicely flavored.

Appearance - Pours to a very nice reddish orange color with a solid 3/4" off white head that holds well. Carbonation is evident with a solid stream of bubbles rising to the head. This beer gives a very pleasant appearance.
Smell - Faint hint of cinnamon and citrus, with orange overtones. Caramel and roasted malt are evident as well.
Taste - The citrus is somewhat lost as the bitter hoppiness of this beer really stands in contrast to the toasted malt flavor. It's an iteresting contrast that is somewhat conflicting at the initial taste, but comes together well at the back of the tongue.
Mouthfeel - Full bodied and creamy. This beer will touch your entire palate during a swallow.
Overall - I like this beer. I would have preferred that the hoppiness would have been drawn back a bit as to not overpower the citrus and cinnamon, but nonetheless this is a pleasant beer to drink. 9.0% ABV packs a nice kick that is appropriate for a hearty red ale like Shark Attack.

22oz bottle served in a snifter.
aggressive pour yeilds a frothy, 2 and 1/2" beige head; body of the beer deep amber, almost a mahogany or chestnut tone with ruby highlights. good retention and lacing. nose offers a lot of citric and pine hoppiness with a distinct caramel maltiness in the background.
flavor dials in more of the same. hop forward (pine, citrus) with that caramel malt backbone. medium to relatively high bitterness. a boozy, especially in the finish. on the fuller side of medium bodied with medium carbonation.
overall this was is good, albeit flawed on a few fronts and just didn't quite click for me. while it's not my favorite offering from port but i wouldn't turn one down, either.

A - Pours with a massive, three finger head of white foam on top of a hazy, amber-brown body. The head settles at a moderate pace and leaves excellent, thick curtains of lace on the glass.
S - A pungent, sweaty hop aroma with notes of pine, grapefruit, and onion as well as noticeable caramel and toffee character.
T - Dark caramel and toasty toffee up front with hoppy notes of pine and orange. Some more pine and thick caramel in the middle and a finish full of dark sugar and hops with lingering grapefruit and pine notes as well as moderate, balancing bitterness.
M - A medium-thick body, moderate carbonation, and a slightly sugary finish.
D - Lots of malt and lots of hops with an oddly balanced finish. The sweaty hops from the aroma are replaced by pine and a grapefruit note that works very well with the darker malt in the flavor profile. Overall a very drinkable and pungent red DIPA.

Pours a dark ruby with a bright reddish hue. Thumbs width khaki head that eventually dissolves and okay lacing. Aroma of toffee, some fruit, and alcohol. I dislike tasting the alcohol in this style beer and the alcohol is very present with each sip of this one alongside the toffee from the malt and some indistinct fruit. Some carbonation to the moutfeel, medium bodied. Overall, I was disappointed in this one. Way way too heavy on the alcohol presence and not enough other flavors to remedy that in any way. I did not make it through this bottle.

A: Rustic cadmium orange exit from the bottle appears a deep ruby red in the vessel with help from strong backlighting. A staggering 3 finger light khaki rigid foam structure dominates the glass by volume with a rock steady rate of retention. Great sticky foam coverage shellacks the glass leaving little windows of opportunity. Finishing pour from the bomber produces lots of bran colored yeasty matter on the bottom of the vessel, yum. Medium show of effervesce beads up and replenishes the head.
S: Sweet crystal malt, not to much hops. Light peppery citrus flower. Was expecting a bit more aromatic wise.
T: Dry citrus flowery hops with a peppery spicing. Toasty crystal malt, dry lemon grinds with some dry pine. Spicy alcohol strong malt base with a spicy finish.
M: Medium bodied, peppery dry citrus on the hold. Good carbonation presence with a warming alcohol and peppery leave.
O: Strongly hopped with a good strong malt base. Definitely worth a try.

A murky copper gold beer, huge khaki head, with tons of even lacing with great retention. The port hop sediment joins as well, ruining the look.
Smell is caramel, roasted malts, tangy pine hop. Clean and pure.
Taste is a balance with piney and caramel malts. The malts and hops flip flop taking turns in the forefront throughout the taste until the finish.
Texture is a little bit bubbly, not quite as smooth as I would like, but a nice hoppy bite rounds out the medium bodied beer. The bite mellows as it warms.
I really enjoyed this beer, great flavor and nice complexity. However, that crappy sediment from Port strikes again, ruining it a bit for me.

Poured from a bomber into a pint glass. Reviewed live.
A- Poured a beautiful two finger off-white head. Long retention and some sticky lacing. This head has stuck around for like three minutes. Not bad. Cola brown, translucent with nice carbonation.
S- Hop heavy, some spicy hop oil is the first smell you get. Cherry, apple scents. Fruity and nice smelling.
T- Hop heavy again, but with layered malts. The hop oil finishes bitter, overpowers most other flavors in the beer.
M- Creamy, but at the same time it seems too watery for the taste and smell.
O- Looks great! Goes downhill from there.

A: The beer is slightly hazy amber-brown in color. It poured with a finger high beige head that gradually died down but consistently left a thin head covering the surface.
S: There are moderate to strong aromas of citrus hops in the nose—grapefruit stands out in particular.
T: Like the smell, the overall taste has lots of citrus flavors and is accompanied by a moderate amount of bitterness. There are also some hints of caramel malts.
M: It feels medium-bodied and crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is packed with hop flavors but is rather well balanced with just enough underlying malt.

Bottled on 1/12/12
A: Pours a clear brownish red in color with a finger tall beige head. The head reduces to patches and a ring a the edges of the glass but never completely goes away. Moderate to significant lacing is observed.
S: Very intense aromas of citrus hops and lighter hints of pine hops.
T: Slight hints of caramel malts up front followed by large amounts of citrus hops and some very light pine hops. Considering the amounts of hops used, the beer is not overly bitter but rather has an approachable hoppy flavor. There is a bit of lingering citrus hops in the finish.
M: Medium bodied with significant amounts of carbonation. Crisp.
O: Great beer for when you are having a hop head moment. I think the aroma on this beer is great and the alcohol is well hidden. Glad the flavor is not as intensely bitter as might be expected from the hop aromas. Very drinkable.

22 oz bottle poured into a snifter. Bottle 11/9/11.
Pours a cloudy reddish color with two fingers of foam. Clearly bottle conditioned. Aroma has a nice citrus hoppiness to it, but there is also substantial crystal malt sweetness in the nose.
First impression is that it is boozy, with a harsh lingering bitter bite. The harshness subsides a bit after a few sips, showcasing a nice malt profile. But the booziness still dominates.
I think this would greatly benefit from a year or two of age. It is a slow sipper, for sure. The hops are more bitter than full of flavor. It goes straight from boozy to bitter, with just a quick glimpse of the malty goodness in the middle.
