January 6th, 2012 - The great American Brown is a great brown, offering up a smell straight up front combing coffee and grass notes with gentle wafts of pipe tobacco fresh from the tin. The aroma matches the wardrobe, which glimmers in the daylight, a dark chocolate lab brown, glossy and also murky. The most notable aspect of the flavor is a long, rolling aftertaste of roasted coffee, served on a mild and soft palate. The rest of the flavor is mostly built of roasted cashew, roasted chicken and a mild and mellow chocolate note.

On tap at Pizza Port in Carlsbad, CA.

Pours a clear dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, nuts, and a slight roasty aroma. Taste is much the same with mild roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with some nice aromas and flavors.

On tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad.

A: The body is very dark brown and the head is tan and quick to recede.

S: Toasted bread is pronounced and there's a little caramel. The beer is lightly nutty and earthy. The malt profile is complex. This smells nice.

T: Caramel and baked bread with biscuit and a dash of chocolate. Moderately sweet with a pervasive nutty element. Bitterness is low.

M: Medium body with moderate carbonation. The mouthfeel is smooth, creamy, and sticky.

Overall: A good Brown Ale. Recommended.

On-tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad

A: The pour is a dark amber color with lots of brown notes. It features a finger of off-white head.

S: Fairly chocolatey with mild toasted and roasted malt aromas. There is a strange touch of dark fruits to it. Sweet toffee and caramel provide much of the aroma. The more I smell it, the more bready it becomes.

T: Quite sweet, probably too sweet. There is only a faint hop bitterness and not much in the way of roast. Lots of toast, toffee, and caramel are present with a little bit of an earthy hop flavor.

M: Medium in body with the carbonation being a touch on the low side. There is a nice smoothness to it, however.

O: Really not that great of a brown ale. Pretty simple and overly sweet.

Picked a growler of this on Saturday afternoon and drank it the next day with my mom and dad, think it cost about twelve dollars to fill but I got some other things too, so it might have slightly more or less, poured into a Port Brewing pint glass

A-Medium brown with some lighter highlights, 1 1/4 inch frothy off white head, decent retention and minor lacing
S-Sugar, caramel, nuttiness, toffee, roasted malts, light milk chocolate, faint hoppiness, bread, and sweetness
T-Taste was pretty nutty at first, had some chocolate and other maltiness in the middle, finish was creamy but pretty weak, did not taste any hops or anything providing much of a dryness, got sweeter as it warmed in my hand, not very complex but the few flavors it did have worked well together
M-Medium bodied, needs some more carbonation, creamy and chewy mouthfeel, sometimes sweet, taste lingers a little
D-Could not drink much more than a glass and that is all I had, alcohol is low and hidden but the stuff is a bit heavy, smooth though

Saw this at the Tap Room a few days before and passed on it, then for some reason decided to fill my jug up with it, probably should have went with a strong ale instead even though twenty dollars to fill a growler is a little much, probably would not drink again, might be worth trying
