Bottled of 5/1/13
Poured in the Sierra Nevada/Dogfish Head IPA glass.
Appearance: (4.5)
Pours a hazy, pale straw yellow with a massive, 3 finger white head that has amazing head retention and leaves a ton of thick, sticky lacing behind as it recedes. Gorgeous looking IPA.
Aroma: (4.75)
Waves of ripe, juicy peach from the hops slap your nose as soon as you raise the glass to your face. Behind the bright peach, there are huge notes of pine, grapefruit and even a little bit of pineapple. There is a light, flaky cracker light malt presence underneath the deluge of tropical hops, that becomes more and more apparent as the beer warms.
Taste: (3.75)
A sizable wallop of grapefruit pith greets your palate with notes of resinous pine and light apricot soon to follow. The beer finishes dry with a kiss of cracker-like malt to help balance out the bitter hops. There are lingering notes of lemon zest and pine resin left dancing on your palate. There is a faint alcohol phenol presence in the finish as the beer warms.
Mouthfeel: (4)
Medium bodied with moderate to high carbonation.
Overall: (4)
A very solid, albeit not the most complex IPA from Port Brewing. The very tropical aroma is absolutely wonderful, but unfortunately the taste doesn't quite live up to it. If more of the apricot and peach aromatics were carried over in taste, I'd absolutely love this beer. Overall this is a very solid IPA, but just a tad disappointing.
