Pours like used motor oil...deep black with a half finger tan head that melts to a capping thin sticky lacing.
Aromas are wonderfully typical....dark fruits, sweet malts, raisins, plums, prunes...nice. As it warms, very strong coffee notes. Delicious.
Ahhh...sweet malts and dark candied fruits fill the mouth with wonderful desert flavors. Nice alcohol burn follows it all as you swallow.
After taste is surprisingly clean but reminiscent of the sweet candied dark fruits and warming alcohol.
This is much more like an old ale to me than merely an American Strong Ale.
I absolutely LOVE this!!!!

Enjoyed on tap recently at the Trappist. I had some of this stuff from a bottle last summer--very good but oh what a difference when properly stored and served!
Black as the night with a short-lived tan head that left some nice lacework behind. Wonderful aroma of coffee, malt, chocolate, raisins. Flavor is a well balanced mix of caramel, toffee, sweet and bitter chocolate, roasted malt, warming alcohol. Mouthfeel is thick and smooth. This was about as delicious a beverage as I can remember tasting. Like a milkshake for grownups.

22oz capped bottle into 25oz snifter. Grabbed this one while in Boston since this brewery isn't available in VA.
Like the label indicates, this one is black like it came straight out of an old truck's oil pan. The head is very smooth and appears soft. Very dense, and carries a rather deep tan head, almost brown like chocolate milk. As the head settles to leaves a wall of thin foamy film on the glass. By the time the beer is gone, the side of the glass is coated by webbed lacing.
Very heavy burnt malt aromas, teamed up with a little bit of cocoa and coffee bean. A touch of raisin or prune is in the background. The alcohol comes through a little, but it's still well hidden considering it's stature. A wispy hint of oak (vanilla) makes its way in there from the 20% that was barrel aged.
Lots of scorched malt flavors setup the base for the rest of the array. The roastiness is bookended by a little bit of trailing citrus bitterness, holding up stacks of chocolate and a bit of smokey spice.
The best thing about this beer is how an almost charred beer like this can be so velvety smooth in every sip. The carbonation is good but maybe a little on the lower side, allowing for a syrupy concoction that coats the mouth and lingers for a while. You don't need to do anything other than take small sips at a slow pace because even after you've swallowed, the flavors hang around and slowly evolve. As the beer warms the smoke starts to come out a little more.
I think 30W is an accurate description of this beer, just as it states on the label (40W SAE when hot). Unlike what sludges out of your dad's car, this is actually extremely drinkable. At first this seems like it's just another Russian Imperial Stout, but this is in its own class. It's more like a strong American Stout. Heavy in malts, high in alcohol, but the hops are hidden in the background. Plus, this one is a blend of a new Old Viscosity, and one that has been hanging around in bourbon barrels for a while. There's a good amount of complexity in this one, just as much as any RIS or Barleywine. Definitely one of the beer beers I have had. Recommended.

A very special cask of a very special favorite of mine...three words that best describe the difference between this and the standard OV : smoother, mellower and boozier.
Served in a pint glass, thick, blacker than molassas with a film of cocoa- brown cream head and no visable carbonation...it looks like a sipper.
Sweet dark roasted malt, rich dark fruit undertones compliment chocolate, coffee and licorice that just reel you in for the taste.
The taste...incredible! This is a gourmet meal and dessert in a glass. It tastes just like the smell, only better. I can't get enough of this stuff even though it took 45 minutes to finish one pint!
Big body with big ABV and a smoother than silk mouthfeel, I can't recommend this one enough...Cheers!

Thanks to SuzyGreenberg for the trade.
This beer pours a thick jet impenetrable black. Thin, thin layer of beige head bubbles despite strong elevated pour. The nose has oak, rich vanilla, bourbon, and cream notes. Smells alittle of alcohol. smells to me almost like tiramisu. Mouthfeel is thick as hell, very chewy. This beer is incredible! The first thing I think of is instantly tiramisu. Black chocolate, coffee, rich cake and thick vanilla flavors. DAMN!! This is an incredible brew. The finish has a nice little hop bite. Smoootttthhhh!!!. I just acquired two older viscosities (thanks JCB) and the first taste of this inspired me to pull the one i put in the fridge out and cellar it with the other. The smoothness of this beer is incredible. Very good, yet light alcohol flavors. This is very much a desert. Incredibly drinkable and very tasty. WOW. I love this beer. This one is defenitely worth all the hype. I am priveleged to have experienced this beer. Thanks again to SuzyGreenberg.

Poured from a growler received in a GIF from IntriqKen Thanks for the opportunity.
Pours a solid black that no light gets through. Starts with a thin tan head that goes away quickly. Aroma is really nice chocolates, coffee, some dried fruit, a little caramel. Taste follows the smell, but adds some alcohol bite in the end. Mouthfeel is thick as promised. Excellent brew, very complex, thick, tasty. Send more.

Old Viscosity ON TAP at STONE BREWERY; Black color with a dark short tan head and lovely in appearance-very inviting.
A sweet assertive and most appealing rich sugared coffee nose-smells like a piece of fresh dark chocolate/coffee candy;
Huge dark bitter chocolate flavor with a creamy chocolate mouth and loads of underlying sweet coffee flavors. A big creamy and wonderful drinking stout.
Bigger, creamier, thicker, sweeter and, candidly, more appealing on tap than from the bottle. Nice! I had this with spicy wild boar ribs at Stone's cafe, but this would drink well with most spicy and big meat or game dishes. Also would do well as a nice accompaniment to drink with dessert.
A nice drink with which to simply relax and sip away after dinner or with a cigar.
This stout, ON TAP, can give any of the "big player, prestigious stouts" a run for their money.

After dinner drink... oh baby.
The pour fits the name... draining the old oil from the ol' Apache truck thick. Dark caramel color with a creamy head.
Sweet maltiness dominates, with subtle hints of hops; it all fits what you expect out of the style.
What incredible awesomeness once I tasted it. THICK mouthfeel which really was appropriate for all the malty smokiness, sweetness, molasses x 2, dates, burnt currants, basic fruitcake.
As an after dinner drink, off a snifter, it was an incredible end to a prime rib eye steak dinner. Not often a fan of a strong ale, but man, Port Brewing does this RIGHT and PROPER.

Appearance: pours a thick black color with a short one finger head that falls pretty quickly. No significant lacing develops.
Smell: simply wonderful. Loads of roasted malts, molasses, coffee, dark chocolates, and hints of alcohol. This is a beer you take a big sniff of before you put it to your lips.
Taste: follows the nose with similiar roasted malts, molasses, slightly burnt coffee, and chocolates. Alcohol is noticeable but well hidden and contributes to the flavor profile in a good way. Nice bitterness and a bit of vanilla is also detectable.
Mouthfeel: heavy bodied beer. Smooth and syrupy. Aftertaste is long on the flavor profile and seems to stick to your tongue.
Drinkability: this is a killer brew. The high alcohol knocks this down a notch but this is a wonderful slow sipping brew.

Poured out of a 22oz bomber into a 22oz glass. Head came up over the rim of the glass and held like a thick creamy foam. Great start! Roasty flavor slightly bitter little boozy bet this will be even more amazing as it warms up. I have to lean towards it fitting more into the RIS category. Great beer for a pretty good price point at Sherlocks in Marietta. Gonna have to try more stuff from Port Brewing.

Purchased at City Beer, I think this was the 2007 batch, it's been almost a year (feels like a year anyway) since acquired this bottle.
I was surprised to find that this is labeled as a strong ale, when really this stuck me as not that.
This beer pours a dark black, with a little dark chocolate hue to it, but it's pretty damn dark none the less. There is a dark golden/mocha head that leaves a vanilla colored lace shortly after.
The beer is packed with malt chocolate and roasty aromas that I would find in a stout, but then again, i found similar things in Death and Taxes and thats not considered a stout. A lot of the flavor is weighed towards a coffee taste, kind of bitter, but there's some sweetness to back it up. This beer has a full body that leaves some oily stuffs on your tounge.
Overall I really like this beer, I had a few others but i drank them cause it was so good. This beer is a great sipping beer. However, call it what you want, maybe Strong Ale is misleading, it's style might be a gray area. HOORAY!

This was my first introduction to the NBS ~ New Beer Sunday ~ brood . I told Malty that this is my first brew for it but I did not get a chance to put my paperwork to the laptop . This is one of my favorite brews since I started the addiction of looking good beer . On the label it says " Not Your Dad's 30 Weight " but , it does look like motor oil and pours like motor oil . The color of this brew is as black as night and there is a nice full , thick head as it is poured into my beer mug . Smells and looks like a stout . I love this . Roasted coffee , toasted Irish bread and oatmeal raisin cookie aromas are there . Bourbon lingers on the nose when I take a nice deep inhale . After a few sips my glass is " dirty " . The lacing is everywhere and it looks soooo much like used threading oil . Did I tell you that I love this ? With beers that have the ABV well hidden my cheeks turn red , this stuff has that and the tips of my ears red too . Take the chill out of the lousy winter that we are having in the city of Boston ~ but our sports teams are not doing that bad ~ .
The mouthfeel is is thick , oily , chewy / crusty . Like treacle bread . The label says 10.0% ABV but there is no burn and the drinkability is fantastic . This will be one of my " go to's " from now on . Cheers to the lads at Port Brewing for making a brew that is out of this world . Hope Santa puts some of this in my stocking .
Go Pats . C'mon the Hoops ...

Pours to an almost blackish brown body that shows no light when held to a flame. Head is a chocolate brown foam at about an inch and a half with nice retention. Nose is vesty with rich malt and sweet spices that have hints of alchol, toffee, and cordials. Enters the mouth just as darkness should, long rich and full of flavors such as burnt malt nuttiness, toasted biscuits and subtle dry sweetness. A big dark beer with wonderful complexity. Mouthfeel is warm and welcomed. Alchol is scary well hidden except for the belly warming. There is even a trace of hop bitter to the finish. A super drinkable beer that I wish I could find locally.

Rich aroma has smoky tones of roast quality coffee, semi-sweet chocolate, caramel and molasses with just a touch of sweetness. It absolutely screams DRINK ME!!! Comes out of the bottle a nearly opaque reddish sable just a couple tomcat whiskers above black with a thick, fluffy, fine-bubbled light beige head. Flavor is - um, you sure this is an American Strong Ale and not a porter or stout? I LOVE stouts and porters, and this sure tastes like one! OK - mouth-filling flavor has tones of semi-sweet chocolate, quality coffee, caramel and licorice with a subtle hint of citrus. Texture is fizzy and lively, leaving behind a firm and pleasant tingle. This just might be Port Brewing’s best, outside of the Lost Abbey series!

Poured from a 22oz. bottle into a stemmed glass.
The color us a dark black with nice light brown foamy head with some nice thick lacing left on the glass.
The smell is a bit dark chocolate flavor. Also has a bit of a caramel feel with some slightly nuttiness to it.
The taste is pretty dark chocolate flavored, some really nice bitterness as well. There is also a bit of a coffee flavor to this beer as well. A small coffee bean flavor does come out at the end giving into an aftertaste that is quick pleasant.
The feel of this beer is only slightly heavier than expected but still a good hearty beer. Is easy drinking with not too much carbonation. Avery flavorful, good drinking beer.

Poured from a 750 bomber and picked up from old town liquors in Temecula CA... I must say the guy who runs the store is an awesome.. awesome dude who really knows his stuff. He suggested this brew as I am from New Hampshire and cant really get this over there...Upon pouring the viscosity is rather apparent... pours with a couple inch caramel colored head. The brew is jet black. If anyone wanted to try Kate the Great 2010 but didnt get to... get this damn beer... it is very comparable to it. There are flavors of dark roast coffee with sweet undertones of caramel and roasted fruits. Old Viscosity is such a complex and wonderful brew. Drinkability... at 10 percent this one bomber is just fine but that speaks nothing of its quality. Soo Soooo good.
Cheers.

Have had this on tap each time I make it into the Pizza Port in San Clemente.
Very dark beer upon pouring. 2-3cm light brown head. Smells delicious; carmels abound. Tastes fantastic, more carmel. Barely any trace of alcohol in the taste, I would not have guessed it a 10% beer unless I had seen it on the bottles they sell. Since I am new to reviewing (as well as beeradvocacy), I don't know what else to say. I do know that I typically enjoy darker beers, and I absolutely adore this beer. It is listed as a "RIS" on BA, but on the bottle I have, it just says "ale." But either way it's really a great beer. If you are ever in a Port Brewing location, i highly recommend at least getting a taster. Fabulous fabulous beer.

Purchased a 22 at Hi-Time Wine Cellars in Costa Mesa, California, at the recommendation of one of the employees, and served in a tulip glass. I asked for a good local brew, something I couldn't get in Seattle, and this was highly recommended.
Poured a beautiful mahogany from bottle to glass with a smallish, bubbly head that dissipated rather quickly. Appeared peaty brownish-black in the glass (that's a 10YR 2/1 for you geologists out there!). Following several tastes, the head completely disappeared. The only hint of it that remained was a swirling surface lacing that moved about as if it had a life of it's own as the beer slowly warmed.
Initially, during the pour, it smelled strong like a protein shake with lots of vanilla (seriously!). The smell melded into a pungent aroma of sweet chocolate-covered cherry, aged burbon, and maybe a little raisin and kiwi fruit. Unreal. Many, many layers here. As soon as I started pouring and smelling this I knew immediately it would be a brew to be reckoned with! Despite the quickly vanishing head, the beautiful aroma remained. The smell is completely out of control. It doesn't get better than this.
Wow...just...wow! The taste was very complex, a little sweet and smoky, some burbon, just a little piney, with cherries and again dark chocolate (but not as a major player like a porter or stout often is), medicinal (almost a nighttime cherry cold medicine hint), black malty, and roasty. I'll need several more tastings to figure out what freight-train-of-flavor just smacked me upside the head.
Old Viscosity...and viscous it is! Syrupy but smooth mouthfeel, reminded me of Old Stock Ale in that respect. Very nice!
Alert! Approaching a barley wine here. Though it doesn't resemble one in appearance, it does share some characteristics of smell, flavor and mouthfeel. Still an Old Ale/Strong Ale, but there is really only one way to classify this brew, and that is damn excellent! Port Brewing has their shit together for sure. This rivals the near-by Stone brews in complexity and taste. Strong! But I'd still drink 2 or 3 bombers and crawl home a happy man. Please pick this beer up if you get a chance. You owe it to yourself.
Second review:
Old Viscosity, late 2007. Reviewed on 5/20/08.
This version poured black-coffee in color with sturdy uneven lacing and a stratified latte-foam head. Coffee cake, vanilla, rainier cherries, alcohol, and raisins were discernible in the nose with tart apple cider tingling in the effervescence; a touch of cloves emerged as the beer warmed. Flavors of dark molasses, burnt caramel, and over-ripe plums melded into deep cherry-oak and baker's chocolate with a peppery tongue-numbing alcohol finish. An exceptional, silky mouthfeel caps off this beer experience.
This is one of the most interesting and complex beers I've had and it only gets more interesting and complex with age. I can't wait to try the early 2007 version I have stashed away.

Received today in a trade from Intriqken -- maximum respect, Ken!
As deep and thick a black as I've ever seen on any Imperial Stout with a thin, dense burnt orange head. Big aromas of black and roasted malts, with coffee, molassess, and prune notes. Some alcohol vapors are present, too. Damn, I just can't stop sniffing this one! The nose is truly amazing in its complexity. Okay, finally, a taste: dark fruits of unending variety (black cherry, dried Black Mission figs, raisins, and many more), scorched coffee, composted earth, and a gigantic -- and I mean big -- alcohol flavor. The booziness is kind of jarring at first, but with each sip it becomes more and more integrated to the entire flavor profile, without, however, getting lost in the shuffle. Spruce essence in the burps. Chewy barley malt and piney coffee-ground sandwich. Dense, slick, and utterly full in the mouth. Increasingly milder but ever-present alcohol burn. One of the most amazing things about this beer is the way this alcohol characteristic is always obvious but never harsh or distracting. It's actually pretty mind-boggling. A very difficult beer to pigeonhole: in my estimation, it's by almost all observations an enormous Russian Imperial Stout, but the ostentatious alcohol presence takes it a step or eight beyond that more or less traditional style. It's also a little bit chewier and less vinous than most big stouts... Ridiculously fascinating, all told. It's so huge, I can't say I'd crave one of these more than once a month, but its sheer complexity, originality, and straight-up tastiness makes me wish I had much easier access to this than I do. This one's staying on the "Want" list. Thanks again for the opportunity, Ken!

Thanks to Intriqken for this via trade!
Wow, what a brew. Finally a chance to try one of these from a brewery that gets so much blog traffic.
A - midnight black, thick through a swirl. rich dark brown head that start's small and slides to the side of the glass quick so as to not take away from the blackness.
S - Smokey, roasted malt, rich maltes, dark ripe fruit. Wow, a lot going on in the nose.
T - alternating between rich sweet malts and sharp bitter essences - espresso and hops. I lean towards an RIA but it's not that far into the hops. hard to describe but very tasty.
M - full bodied - this is a definer! Ridiculously thick but not cloying or syrupy. How'd they do that?
D - Went down so smooth, so easy. No overwhelming sense from the alcohol. I can easily see buying a case for the cellar and enjoying now and as it ages as well.
Kudos to those that buy and enjoy this beer! Envy that it's in your market and not mine!

I aged this bottle 1 year before drinking. I have to say that I'm a big fan of Port, and this is my favorite beer from them yet. Pours black and viscous with a head that settles to a thin cap and creates some lacing. The nose has sweet malt, bitter chocolate, whiskey, prunes, rum soaked cherries, and some piney hops. Great! The taste is very bitter up front with lots of piney hops, gentian, and bitter orange. These bitter flavors are followed by long creamy dry malt and whiskey notes. The mouthfeel is smooth but with tannic edges, and rich and thick. Extremely satisfying, this is simply a great beer.

Pours a ruddy chestnut/ebony with 3+ finger of mocha colored head. Good lacing & head retention
S: Bakers chocolate & licorice & booze
T: Nice chocolate & coffee grounds & some booze up front. Carob, mocha & toasted to the point of some burnt grains as this warms, along with loads of dark fruits ( raisins & plums mostly), vanilla, & touch of herbal bitter hops sliding down the throat. Finishes dry with some whisky/oaky notes along with caramel & more vanilla
MF: Oily with near zero carbonation & much chewyness & great warming sensations. Every thing is in near perfect balance
Drinks great for the style & ABV, but 2 bombers of this & it's probably, nighty, night!
Another great purchase from Plaza Liquors in Tucson & a super value at $6 a bottle!
