thanks mikesgroove for the generous LIF

A - this beer pours a ridiculously pitch black color with a toffee like colored head which dissipates quickly.looks like a big ol stout to me...

S - definitely some bitter notes as well as some chocolaty qualities in there. initial smell reminds me of a big stout

T - don't really pick up on the 10% alc in this beer, very smooth with some burnt notes to it most likely from the malts. The dryness I would attribute to the barrel aging which might also be perceived as a cocoa flavor, so definitely some chocolate flavors as well in here.

M - silky smooth with a lot of body and very little carbonation. coats the tongue and just glides down the pipes.

D - this beer is an excellent way to end your evening; more of a sipper than anything else.might light up a cigar to go along with the rest of this bottle.

22oz bottle into a snifter. Bottled in August 2012

Pours a pitch black with a nice, thick beige hue. This beer is more carbonated than I expected it to be and has a very nice looking appearance. Now is when it gets tricky. The smell is of roasted malts and whiskey? Perhaps, it's quite different. i was expecting chocolate or cocoa but im not really getting that here. The taste is quite intriguing and unique as well. I definitely detect vanilla on the front and perhaps bourbon on the back, but thats not exactly it. I cant put my finger on just what this flavor is, but it's great. Its got a mixture of everything, blended so well you cant distinguish one from the other. The feel is a bit lighter than i was expecting too. Id still call this full bodied but its not syrupy in any means. Its sort of creamy even. It is so easy to drink, partly because each sip you take you get a different flavor. I drank this too fast!

Overall this beer is exceptional in its uniqueness. Honestly i was a bit skeptical at first but dare i say im in love with this one. Kicking myself for not buying the older version as well. Will look forward to that one for next time.

Appearance: midnight black -- so much so that no light penetrates the brew. Wonderful looking head: a deep oaky color with a hint of ruby. Head size was about a finger and a half.

Smell: Semi-sweet cocoa is the strongest player here, with an underlying note of coffee and malt. The alcohol tickles the nose as well but is not strong enough to overtake the power of the ingredients.

Taste: Coffee is the strongest during the initial taste. The cocoa flavor sits on the palate as an aftertaste. The lingering aftertaste is of charred oak or tobacco. Exhaling through the nose with beer on the palate highlights the cocoa nibs and toastiness of the coffee.

Mouthfeel: Nicely carbonated, but venturing on a tad too much. The beer beneath the carbonation is slippery, verging on oily, yet I would classify it as more of a glossy consistency.

Overall: The complexity of this beer is wonderful. The alcohol is masked by the robustness of the ingredients. This is a hefty, heavy beer, and the taste becomes more and more interesting the deeper you are into the bottle.

Bottled sometime in 2012.

A: Poured black as night. Nice cocoa colored, tiny bubbled head. Looks amazing.
S: Lots of chocolate, cocoa powder, roasted malts, some coffee/expresso. Maybe a little bit of vanilla.
T: I got a lot of bitterness from dark chocolate and expresso. Not sure if this is made with coffee, but it tasted like a coffee stout to me. Not a lot of sweetness.
M: This beer is smooth, finished dry and makes you want to take another sip.
O: Pretty great stout. Not the most amazing out there, but still very good. At 10% you don't taste any of the alcohol. I really didn't get any of the barrel aged notes you usually would, maybe because it's only partially aged. I would like to try it fresh to compare.
