Huge thanks to Mikeys01 and his wife Lisa for bringing this back for my ladyfriend and I! On their honeymoon, no less.
Perfectly clear garnet red, a scarlet window when held up to a light. A small ivory head forms on the pour, dropping off before I can take a sip, leaving the beer bald headed. Further agitation fails to generate any sort of foam. Deep, thick aroma full of caramel malt, softer fig and raisin fruitiness, and a lighter whiff of floral hops and booze. Clean and rich. Absolutely packed with flavor, a burst of german caramel maltiness immediately hits the tongue. Molasses, raisin and fig. Oozing with sweetness. Big boned, with refined carbonation. Nice lagery smoothness on the palate. Floral hops are more or less buried, keeping the balance just within reason while allowing the malt a nearly open throttle. Sugary sweet. Gushing, slightly roasty caramel and molasses, finishing with a brush of estery alcohol. Whoo!
Very, very nice. Hugely flavored. Perhaps not quite as complex as my local brewery's doppelbock, but it's really, really good nonetheless. After the second pint the sweetness was getting a bit much, but I could certainly revisit this with enthusiasm. I was definitely feeling it after a couple pints. Very authentic german feel. A real meal of a beer.
