12oz : tulip
Black, with deep red highlights. Craggy, foamy light brown head.
Roasty malt notes in both the nose and taste. Faint cocoa notes as well.
Medium+, smooth body, with mild carbonation.
A well done lager, easy drinking. A good winter beer.

This beer as a nice smell and a creamy, toasted caramel head. The color is a very dark, opaque brown-black. You can't see through this even when it's held up to the light. It looks a lot like coffee in this way, at least the coffee I drink. I agree with the statement on the bottle suggesting coffee and chocolate flavors. It’s the flavor of very strong black coffee or dark, bittersweet chocolate. Both have a little tang and a bitter bite to them that this beer also has, plus a malty sweetness that makes this a very good beer.
In my opinion, it’s a well-crafted beer. It's among the better American bock-style beers I've had.

Pours a small fizzy head covering that fades quickly, leaves bits of lacing, over very dark molasses brown beer with slight hints of ruby light somehow making it through.
Nose some dark toasty malts, caramel syrupy, light hints of cocoa and coffee but barely, little toffee, little nutty, with a hint of estery booze, light lager like soft crisp malt aromas that still come out somehow behind the other malts, the chocolate comes out more as it warms.
Taste starts with a creamy chocolate, plenty of thick lush cocoa and porter like dark malts, hint of coffee, little toffee and caramel but a bit of a syrupy thing, and touch of a biscuit malt. Lager flavors are there again, light and crisp with some softness. A fluffy roasted malt flavor slowly increases with a very light burnt toffee kinda flavor, and brings a little more coffee grinds. Booze comes on slightly warming, wouldn't normally feel it but since this is a light lager feel to it the booze does present itself. Finish is dry and fairly crisp, nice toasty brown malts, plenty more lush cocoa, little sticky syrupy residue, more caramel and light burnt black malt all lingering, and just a touch of bitterness coming through as well.
Mouth is med bodied, a cross between lighter crisp lager and somewhat lush creamy thick cocoa like feel, decent carb, and a little warming booze.
Overall an interesting beer, I would almost call this a true baltic porter, the style that used to be made, lots of dark malt flavors, cocoa, little coffee, caramel, light black malt, very little bitterness, all that with the crispness of a lager, the way baltic porter used to be before people started calling anything a baltic porter. The very light burnt flavor from the black malt might be the only issue with this beer, and it is light. The booze does feel a little stronger than it should due to the soft lager feel, but I like it if I think of this as a baltic porter it's right where it should be I think.

Enjoyed 5 of these a few months back, found one in the back of the fridge and time to give it a proper review even though it is a bit past its recommended BB date of 1/24/13.
Poured into a pint glass this brew has basically no head-what is there is tan. Clear and black with ruby highlights when held up to the light. Aromas of chocolately malt is dominant. Holiday spices also here-mostly remniscent of nutmeg. A really nice taste like the aroma, milk chocolate malt, nutmeg and a bit of cinnamon along with a fair amount of sweetness present. Just a hint of bitterness in the aftertaste. Really easy to drink, hard to believe this is 7%. Medium bodied and carbonated-smooth and slightly velvet-like in mouthfeel. Pleasantly surprised by this beer. Very solid. Nice work!

Enjoy By – 01/25/13 – Oh well
A – Pours a dark dark translucent brown, and leaves a fluffy light brown 2 finger head that is soon to disappear, but leaves nice lacing.
S – Some fresh coffee notes, light sweet cocoa powder, but underneath it all is an unmistakable lager backbone.
T – Bitter, burnt coffee here, some light cocoa notes come in again on the finish. A little licorice as well.
M – Light-Medium body, a bit strange with the darkness of this brew. The finish is clean, and quite crisp and leads to a finish that is quite quick.
O – A conundrum here, tip my hat to Full Sail for making a lager with such flavor and complexity, but still, I wish it was richer and smoother, it has typical lager carbonation and characteristics, and is a bit off-putting with the real darkness of this one.
