Bottle of 300 ml, poured into a pokal glass. Ingredients are water, barley, corn, hops. I didn't know that Hertog Jan used corn in their beer, must be a recent change.
Pours a golden yellow colour with a white, froathy head, with average retention, which leaves some light lacing behind. Average activity in the glass.
Nice sweet smell. More malts than corn, thankfully and maybe it smells more as it has rice instead f corn.
On the taste you find again more malts than any corn, although you may taste some between sips, nothing too insulting though. On the contrary, makes drinking it more interesting. It finishes with some bitterness, but it;s a very smooth and crisp beer.
Medium to thick body and average carbonation.
I think this is one of the best widely available pilseners in the Netherlands.

On-tap at the Beer Temple, on to the beer:

This pilsner has a pale gold color with thick soapy head which retains well and leaves patchy lacing around the glass. Its aroma gives a kiss of hoeny, hay, grass, the three mixing together well. A little more intense in the mouth as the nose, the sensation of crisp hops hits along with a modest pale malt base and a snap of grass.

I liked this quite a bit.

One of the better pilseners out there. One of the more popular, and somewhat more premium, beers in The Netherlands. Fresh, tasteful and easy.

It won't be like any special beer or anything, but it's better then the Weihenstephaner original which has like 90+ rating here ... Hard to understand.

On tap at the Tir Nan Og in Kingston. A new addition to the tap lineup for the summer season that they ended up continuing.

Poured into a branded Hertog glass (sort of a stein with concave sides). Light golden, good head of froth, decent lacing. Carbonation visible.

Nose is faint malt, bittering hops, apple and herbs. Emphasis on the faint.

Not a bad macro pilsner by any stretch. Tastes fine, nothing jumping out at me as being out of place. A touch above the usual canned suspects out there. A touch of hop bitterness to the finish. Light bodied, mild-to-vigorous carbonation.

There's some flavour here, I'll give it that, and I drank the pint happily with incredible ease. Still, I can't help but feel that his brew could really have been something special, if it had gone more than a single trepidatious step beyond the run-of-the-mill.

Pretty much just a very ordinary pilsner.

Pours deeper yellow than many other pils, moderate head, some decent lacing early on.

Undistinguished nose and taste, but stands up better than your typical macro brew.

Take it or leave it. The kind of thing pretty much anybody will drink.

This beer is sold at every Dutch supermarket together with the other readily available Dutch macrolagers such as Amstel, Heineken, Bavaria, Dommelsch, Brand, Grolsch and such. This one is the most expensive, the crate price is like 50 cents more than most others. A very minimal difference but as a result this one together with Grolsch I think is considered 'premium'.

Anyway,

It is more dark than most other macrolagers. Ofcourse all our macrolagers are more dark than BMC and that Mexican swill but this one to me is more dark than Heineken or Grolsch.
A white head with surprisingly good lacing. Slightly German-like rocky. Good.

It smells grainy with some hops. Nothing special obviously but it smells better than most other macrolagers.

It tastes better than most other Dutch macrolagers too, it has quite a strong grainy flavour and it has a good amount of hops, again, for the style. No chemical flavours or anything as you get with Heineken, despite the use of corn. Good. Even as it warms up a little it does not taste too unpleasant.

Thin mouthfeel with good carbonation.

Probably the best of the Dutch macrolagers.

A very good Dutch beer! Drank this one in a normal dutch beerglass. Nice head and and light yeasty smell. This is how the dutch beer taste. Drank a few today and everytime the quality is A OK.

The head is nice white and stays a while in the glass. This one can be compared with a Dommelsch.

I recently spent a couple of days touring the north part of the Netherlands and had never heard of Hertog Jan. But, since trying new beers was my goal, I drank this beverage almost every day in cafes in Groningen, Zwolle and Apeldoorn.

I know that some people who review beers are pretty snobby about what beers get an excellent rating, but I have to say that if this beer was available in the states and as inexpensive as it is in the Netherlands, it would be my everyday beer. I was very impressed with the drinkability and the taste.

I always have one or two Westmalle Tripels each day, but they are pretty powerful and the Hertog Jan Pils was a nice surprise.

This is a good stand by beer. its always in the fridge at my dutch relatives. its got a nice taste, good head and lacing. its smooth and doesn't offend. thanks gert-jan..

I would say that this is the back up beer for most dutch people, who don't fancy amstel or the heiny..

..straight up..

A good example of the style, I prefer it to more well-known examples such as Beck's, Bavaria, and St. Pauli Girl. Malty and very carbonated, with a slight hops bitterness at the end that isn't as noticible as many others of this style. Crisp and refreshing overall. Give it a try!

This is the pilsener of the Arcener brewery and it is a fine example of a Dutch pilsner, being not very outspoken, but certainly not bland.
It pours a golden color with minimal lacing and a constant carbonation stream. I could not smell a lot, maybe some malty tones, but that is about it.
The taste however, was very pleasant, malty, slightly bitter and a little sulfur. The aftertaste was dry and refreshing, which is exactly what a pilsner should be.
