Jopen's 2011 anniversary beer courtesy of De Bierkoning in Amsterdam.
From a bottle into a snifter.
APPEARANCE: Brown, relatively transparent pour produces a 2+ finger, medium looking, tan head with half decent retention. Head fades to a good foam cap leaving some decent lacing down the glass. Dark brown body, relatively transparent, with higher levels of carbonation evident. Good wisp remains and leaves some nice lacing don the glass. Good head and lace, but way to light and transparent a body.
SMELL: Bolder nose. Lots of roasted malts, some dark chocolate, and a good, solid boozy base on this one. Some dark fruits, like raisins and dates, but the spicy alcohol plays a more prominent role here. Could use more stout qualities over the booze.
TASTE: Very sweet RIS. Reminds me much of Dark Lord 2009. Roasted malt with some dark chocolate and molasses notes. A good dose of booze in there, with sweet dark fruits, cherries and some dark grapes and red wine qualities. Quite boozy, with lots of spicy alcohol and wine like flavors on swallow. A bolder and lingering aftertaste is slightly roasted with touches of molasses, and heaps of sweet fruits, wine and spicy alcohol. A big, sweet, imperial stout
PALATE: Medium body and medium to higher levels of carbonation evident. Very creamy and smooth on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes slightly mouth coating on the palate. Could be slightly bigger, but the creamy smoothness is a pleasant surprise.
OVERALL: This is a big, flavorful imperial stout, but I’m not sure all these flavors are what I’m after. It reminded me very much of Dark Lord 2009. It was enjoyable and I would gladly drink another, but it’s not really a great example of a big, roasted imperial stout. This one was a bit too boozy and missed some of the classic characteristics I love about the style, but it was still a solid brew in its own right. One I would recommended, but I would also offer a warning along side. Give it a go if you can get it.
