This Jopen beer is light orange colored and topped with light lacing and spots around the glass. The kiss of citrus peel, yarn, blanket, and fun rustic aromas warms up the anticipation. Success! The dry and pleasing bitterness starts the beer's flavor in a good direction. Grass and lemon peel add character to the beer while maintaining balance. It's medium bodied with a veletey texture.

Nice! I thought this was a beautiful find. It's delicate, so be gentle ;-)

On-tap at Jopenkerk, Haarlem, Netherlands

A: The beer is pale yellow in color and has a slight amount of carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high dense white head that consistently left a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface.
S: Aromas of sweet fruits and pale malts are present in the nose.
T: The taste has flavors of fruity yeast and pale malts along with hints of alcohol in the finish. It has a light to moderate amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation with some hints of dryness.
O: This beer isn't very complex, but when you consider it is based on a recipie from 1501, it isn't that bad compared to today's beers.

Long neck bottle of 330 ml, at home. Poured into a tulip glass. Ingredients are water, hops, yeast, barley malt, wheat malt and oats. ABV is 6,8%.
Poured a beer light orange in colour, slighty hazy. Head was froathy, almost three fingers in height. Quickly half of it was gone but the remaining half had a very good retention. Very little lacing left behind.
Nice fruity smell, apricots, citrus hops, . Some alcohol if you smell really deep.
Taste is bitter right from the beginning until the very finish and the bitterness seems to stay for ages on the palate, along with the dryness. Some bready notes can be found as well.
Medium carbonation and a creamy body.
Overall, a nice sipping beer, that balances between being a pale ale and an IPA.

This is a beer from the Jopen Brouwerij in Haarlem and therefore can be bought all over Nordholland in the right places. This beer is brewed following a recipe from 1501, when Haarlem exported beer from France to Russia with a turnover of 6 million liters a year (about the consumption of one entire Oktoberfest). I drank this at home in a original Jopen Stem-glass.

L: murky yellow orange body, nice 1-2 finger medium bubbled white head that reduces to a thin layer after a few minutes and leaves some lacing.

S: hops, floral aroma, yeast

T: really great on the hops, bitter, some sweetness

F: fine tingling on the tongue, could be more refreshing, some velvet feel

O: A very nice blonde that is clearly on the bitter side. I wonder if in 1501 this beer tasted somehow similar. It was probably not that clean and I doubt they had the same quality hops available all the time. However, this is a simple very drinkable beer that could improve a little on carbonation in my opinion.

A: Single finger head, tons of chunky suspended sediment, looks like a pond. Not so much rising carbonation, dark orange.
S: Thick, heavy peach bread, slightly nostril opening, a hint sour.
T: Funny, artificial, plasticy alcohol. Also pretty bitter in a planty sort of way, the kind of plants that you shouldn't eat. Those are the two very dominant flavors. Underneath there is something kind of peachy.
M: "Tart," kind of, whatever that plasticy element is doing to my mouth.
O: Two major flaws to what would otherwise be a decent beer.

Searching for hoppy beers lately, I had to check the Jopen hoppenbier, naturally.
I've had a few from Jopen brewery that I found to be ok, but also a bit middle of the road.
Little 30 cl. bottle.

Thick fluffy head, good carbonation, nice lacing, a golden colour beer.
First smell from the bottle is actually malt and yeast, but after the pour the aroma developes into a nice range of hoppyness: citric, floral, spice. A bit of pine.
Taste is a bit disappointing. It doesn't have any of the tough bitterness you'd like from hop beer. It's very mellow, almost sweet from malts. Hardly any spice left in it.
However, leaving it a few minutes, it again developed into more interesting notes.
Mouthfeel has quite a bit of alcohol.
I think it's very unbalanced, but ok to try.

Bottle at In de Wildeman in Amsterdam. From notes.

A - Poured a yeast streak filled bright yellow colour. Great sticky lacing from the white head and a film of retention.

S - Orange peel, yeast, and noble and citrussy hops there. Toasted malt. Orange really comes out.

T - Yeasty. Orange peel and same sort of noble/citrussy hops with that toasted malt. Alot yeast character. A little spritsy.

M - Medium to strong carbonation. Light body.

O/D - Seems like a standard American influenced Belgian ale. Not spectacular in any respect. Very nice on a quiet night outside and worth a shot if you're in the neighbourhood.

The beer is deep golden with brass tones, clouded, a white high and firm head that leaves very good lacing.

The smell is somewhat malty, nuts, bread, but also citric, grape, and fruity, lemon and apples.

The taste is initially sweet, candy and toffee, some lemon, bitter oranges and grape peel. Well balanced.

Medium carbonation, soft and refreshing, a dry long finish.

A good American IPA I would say. Well balanced.

A: Poured it into my Jopen glass. A great hazy yellow/light orange color and a 2 finger thick bubbly head.

S: Floral hops up front but also a toffee like sweetness. Orange peel, grains, malts and a hint of vanilla.

T: I guess it's the cascade hops that make this beer taste like grapefruit. Malts, citrus terpenes and a bit bitter in taste and aftertaste. Has a metallic tone in the background.

M: Medium carbonation and a great creamy feel.

D: Wow, another Jopen that I really dig. Amounts of hops are perfectly dosed for me. Some similarities with Pliney. Will be on my list for another round. Not a fan of metallic notes though.

A - A orangey red in colour, with a massive pillowy head. The body is very cloudy, and the carbonation is quite lively.

S - The aroma is slightly citrus, with noticeable hops.

T - The first thing that hits you is a fruitiness, which has a slight orange peel about it, before making way for a mild chocolate spiciness. The oats are definitely there just before, a dry bitter hoppy finish, which leave a little bit of a perfumy taste.

M - There is a lively feel to it, which doesn't fade. It also managed to be dry but warming.

D - A nice tasting spiced ale, which keeps a pleasant liveliness throughout. Very palatable, and not too overpowering with the alcohol.

The head on this beer is grand and very fine. Underneath is a rusty orange or yellow (somewhat hazy) and lots of carbonic activity.

Smells malty sweet with many fruity, orangey notes. Hops are spicy and have a slight citric quality. Wheat is apparant if you know it's there. A mild touch of yeast seems somewhat out of place.

A sweet and smooth malty start with a nice spicy punch while the fruity, estery flavors cannot be missed. A great finish follows that is bitter and dry and has a complicated hoppy dimension to it. Aftertaste is bitter and still malty.

There is a creaminess to this beer that supports the overall taste perfectly. It's probably the oats in this 1501 recipe that have got something to do with that.

An ale that is refreshing and indeed hoppy (although not heavily), but also quite sweet. A terrific blend that makes for a mature and delicious beer.

Coming in a slim, 300ml brown bottle, BB 02/2011, served lightly chilled in Orval's broad-rimmed chalice. Note: "hoppen"-bier, supposedly very hoppy?

A: pours a bright golden hue with good clarity and a hissing, lightly-carbonated body, topped with a white puffy froth that gradually settles to a very thin blanket to last.
S: the aroma comes very light, very much like a light-bodied but estery Belgian Pale Ale, with a pleasant support from the orangey-citric hops (the feature of this beer then?); in addition to the lightly zesty fruitiness and coriander-like savoury-sweet spicy hints supposedly endowed by exotic yeasts, a very light wheat-ish aroma also manages to come through. Not particularly complex, but the fruity hop theme is truly pronounced for the overall balance.
T: a fluffy-textured mouthful of superb savour-sweet estery spiciness (with hints of leather, pepper and even coriander-seeds to boot) and richly citric fruitiness gradually gives way to the more bitter elements of the flavour that renders an utterly chewy & tangy/zesty-bitter aftertaste lingering until the very end, on top of a rather moderate backbone of crystal-sugary pale malts; just before all's wrapped up, a hearty, mildly warming alc. quietly creeps down the palate to result in an intriguing contrast with the overall bitter palate.
M&D: it's initially slightly fluffy & even "loose" on the carbonation, but as the beer breathes the fizziness softens and at most adds a refreshing edge to the palate, while the wheat-ish elements of the flavour do lighten up the overall body a bit, making this a light, very bitter hoppy pale ale, almost a feast of hops designed to quaff! The performance very well stands up to the imagination that the name "hoppenbier" has given me, while remaining true to its Flemish estery characters. Truly worth seeking out, IMO...

This beer is called hoppenbier, but was not as hoppy as I expected.

Appearance is an orange beer with a 1 inch head and lots of carbonation. Big chunks of yeast float in the beer.

Smell is peachy and honey, some yeast smell and kind of sweet.

Taste is mainly honey and slightly bitter. The expected hop taste was not present. The amount of carbonation made the beer sizzling on the tongue. Mouthfeel was medium, the beer was sweetish. The beer tastes like there is more alcohol than the 6,8% listed.

I probably have an old bottle, but the hoppiness was absent. I want to review this beer again in the future.

We are off on the right foot with this – hazy light amber / yellow with a small, but frothy white head, which quickly died. Still leaves thin sheet lacing. Nice lil' ring of dead yeast soldiers on the bottom.

Spice and clove in the aroma, followed by a very dry, almost campaign like quaff with a malt backbone. The 6.8% hides behind a subtle sweetness, finishing with a sharp stinging of floral hop. Not a bad sipping little brew, just a tad too dry.

Thanks to my great son, “studying” overseas in Amsterdam, for the unique chance.
