330ml bottle from Coco Supermarket, Ubud, Bali (Rp 19,900):
A very clear and light looking beer that's golden amber coloured with a half centimetre, bubbly white head on top that has okay retention at least. It's light on the nose with more slunk than I'd have liked plus some basic corn and adjuncts without anything to grab your attention. It's a semi-sweet aroma with the corn and skunks carrying through to the taste and not a lot else showing. It's got a faint and basic bitterness to proceedings but the balance is all over the place and it's not particularly enjoyable sadly - really poor stuff and the worst so far in Indonesia.

330ml can purchased at a supermarket in Bali for 18500 IRP.
Pilsner. 4.90% ABV (though the label actually puts a +/- sign before the ABV...)
Aroma reeks of cheap syrupy malt extract and little else - not even any grainy notes or grassy hops. Aromatic intensity is average. Suggests an abysmal pilsener-cum-malt-liquor with no subtlety to its execution and a horrid flavour.
Yup - poorly done for a pilsener, with syrupy malt extract running rampant instead of clean pilsener malts being dominant. No Saaz/Noble grassiness here at all. No graininess to liven it up as one would find in decent adjunct lagers. I give it credit for not tasting metallic or watery.
Syrupy, thick for a pilsener, smooth, wet, and unrefreshing. The mild ABV is actually noticeable. Overcarbonated. Poor execution.
Failing even as a refreshing beach lager, this horrid attempt at a pilsener is best left unconsumed. Might pair well with thrice fried rice thrown out by Indonesian street vendors at day's end. I think I prefer Heineken.
Low D (2.03) / AVOID

Tight pilsener with strong flavor. Similar with its more famous 'brother' Bintang, but with more taste to it. And much better than that sh***y Heineken.

Interesting flavor, not a typical pilsner

First dinner in Indonesia and decided to try Anker Bir....a local domestic brand. The appearance was a pale clear yellow with decent carbonsaton that formed into a nice white head. There was not much in the smell, which made it un-impressive. There was a funky taste with this beer that hurt the rating. It is not a very good Czech Pilsner. The funky taste also hindered the mouthfeel....cuz I really didnt want it in my mouth.

While Bintang Bir Pilsner is Indonesia's most famous beer and most popular among tourists and expats alike, most Indonesians I've met who (can afford to) drink beer seem to prefer Anker. This is not saying much, as most will also automatically mix it with local Sprite to make a shandy.
That said, Anker is a stock standard SE Asian lager with hints of a nasty chemical additive or two that is only drinkable ice cold after a long hot and humid Indonesian day. It's golden, it's crystal clear, it has a small head and is cheaper than Bintang by a few thousand rupiah.
