Just had this beer today at lunch. Nice big hoppy IPA with a long bitter finish. I think it lacked some balance in bittering hops and malt. If I compare it to say Hop Stoopid a very high IBU IPA it doesn't hit the mark for a high IBV beer. I doubt they are using hop extract which seems to me the ingredient that is defining big IPA's.
A: Golden to copper with decent head
S: decent hop profile but lacking a big floral/citris aroma of dry hopping
T: Nice amount of malt with a bit too many bittering hops which create a long bitter finish which can be good and bad
M: ABV of 9 pushes this into good to very good mouthfeel.
O: Overall a nice beer but there are many DIPA's better than this one.

First had: on tap at their brewpub
Poured a slightly hazy coppery orange with a small cap of white head that left some doily lacing. Aroma loaded with piney hops. The taste reinforced the piney hops of the smell as the dominant factor, with undertones of citrus. Dry and bitter in the finish, with some alcohol burn. Medium-bodied, and quite drinkable, but can be a palate-killer in larger quantities. Which is okay, if this is all your drinking tonight.

Poured a dark orange-amber with a thin slick of eggshell head. Nice hoppy aroma dominated by pine, grapefruit, and floral notes.
Lowish carbonation from the cask and a smooth, light mouthfeel. Grapefruit and floral hops up front with gentle toffee biscuit. Pleasant pine bitterness and just a hint of booze on the finish.
Would never peg this at 9% - really smooth and very tasty hop-forward IIPA.

The Homo Erectus is Walking Man's flagship Imperial IPA which has a nice bitter hop flavor and a nice malt flavor that tries to catch up but can't quite make it. Hops win.
I really like beers that try and have a balance war in your mouth. This is a solid IPA. Watch out... it is easier drinking than a 9% should be and will knock you on your ass if you're not careful.

On tap at the Porterhouse, West Seattle.
A: Orange/gold in color. Small white head and thick lacing.
S: Strong pine scent backed by citrus.
T: Grapefruit and floral with some piny notes. At 9%, the bite is there but not overwhelming.
M: Medium body with good carbonation.
O: Well balanced with a nice hop profile backed by maltiness. Highly drinkable for an Imperial IPA.

Growler received in a trade with Piclee. Thanks! Poured into a Sierra Nevada 30th Anniversary snifter.
A - Pours a dirty, dark amber color with noticeable yeasty haze, low head and sparse lacing.
S - Citrusy hops - oranges mostly. Bready and biscuity malt...surprisingly low aroma intensity, but what is there is pretty good.
T - Mid level bitterness, balanced toward the malty side. Very biscuity flavors, a bit yeasty with low citrus and some earthy flavors as well.
M - A touch on the thin side of medium with a lower carbonation level (could be due to the growler serving type), smooth.
O - Not bad double IPA...I wish the hop flavors were a bit more intense especially on the citrusy side. Balanced beer with a firm malt base.

On tap at Brouwers, 9/10/10
A-Clear copper with some honeyed highlights, frothy off white head, great sticky lacing.
S-Fruity and juicy. Peach mixed with grapefruit and a hint of honey.
T-Starts off with a stone fruit sweetness, then citrus hops kick in followed by a dry finish of white peaches.
M-Medium bodied with a light lingering bitterness.
D-Quite tasty. Hard to believe this is 9% ABV.

On tap in a 4 oz sampler glass at the Walking Man pub.
appearance - poured an amber orange, streaking lace, low head, retention along the edges
smell - the dry hopping is evident, big resinous hops on the nose, piney
taste - resinous and flavorful hops dominant with a slightly bitter finish
mouthfeel - medium/full bodied, slightly dry finish
drinkability - strong and hoppy but the alcohol is well hidden, amazing IPA

1/2 gal growler from the source.
Pours dark gold with a copper hue and a viscous, robust head of off-white. Plenty of dotted lacing throughout the glass as well as a thin skim coat on the surface.
Aromatics lead off with a nice blend of citrus, pine, and sticky malt. Not screamingly pungent but enticing nonetheless. Powdered grapefruit and pine resins.
Medium bodied with a plump, tacky mouthfeel.
Ripe fruit, gummy malt, and leafy resins start the palate. Plenty of juicy malt to balance and bitterness is fairly light for the style. Sturdy in nature with a good amount of heft and hops. Freshness abundant.
Finishes with lingering, sticky resins, pine-rubbed grapefruit, and a bit of warmth.
Tasty IIPA. I was also able to sample a beer similar to this one (after hours) which was brewed with agave nectar, which kicked ass. Shot down on the growler on that one though.

On tap at Walking Man 12/3 poured into pint glass.
Light amber one finger white head slow disipation, nice retention and very good lacing. Complex nose, fruity and piney hops with bready malt backbone. Big hop hit on tastebuds, good grapefruit hops, with a fairly dry malt profile providing nice balance. Fairly dry hoppy bitter finish. Very drinkable for this ABV, if I didn't have to get to Beervana that evening I would have had several of these. Big hop bomb. Very tasty, worth seeking out.
