Deep red colour, collar of white/off white head, not much in the way of lace. Smell is a mixture of malt and sugar, some fruit is present, but very sweet smelling almost candy like notes mixed with alcohol. The taste is a awful mixture of malt and sugar, some cherry taste and rocket fuel like alcohol...just terrible. Medium carbonation, syrupy and thick feeling, med-full body. This was just horrible, no person should ever have to drink this, I barely got through 1/4 of the tall can before this saw the drain, avoid at all costs.

Piss in a can. I never thought that eating food containing red 40 would make me urinate such a concoction. I kid I kid, like a kid of course, and I id like a kid who is clearly two young to drink or appreciate such a product. This is a Dutch joke right, or why else would they use the term 'Bavaria' in the marketing? I must be out of the loop here man ... #hedoesntget_it

It looks alright, but I have no idea what made it look this way. The writing on the wall{can} does not say it at all. Something is afoot. I wonder what.... but this is Panama and everything here comes by crate. When one asks the question, "Who is John Frum?" I am reminded of this beer. Quite frankly this can knocks out a local, but honestly and in a very well intentioned-good-natured way....they don't know no better.

can dumped into pint glass 11/10/11

A clear pinkish copper with a fair amount of bubbles feeding a short lived thumbs width of tan head that leaves a little polka dot lacing

S smells like caramel covered cherries and some booze, perhaps a little cough syrup and we all know how much I love cough syrup

T metallic booze with some nail polish remover, and not tasty nail polish remover either, I'm talking bad nasty boozy sickly sweet yuck

M sweet boozy heat and a lovely chemical aftertaste that reminds me that drinking stuff under the sink may have been a better idea

O the smell fooled me for a moment but after tasting it I was sure that this is nothing worth trying again

I like getting blackout drunk as much as the next guy but have a little class while waking up in a chicken coup, what dose remorse taste like again?

We pour a brew of reddish copper. The head stands half a finger high and dissipates quickly to a gathering of small tan bubbles around the center of the glass. Bits of chunky lacing are left as it goes. The beer is otherwise clear, with no sediment found. Carbonation appears high, and many bubbles stick around the glass, suspended under the liquid. The aroma is bright and steely. It is comprised of big adjuncty grain, subtle yeast character, and huge coppery bite. There is the faintest sugary, fruity sweetness, and has an earthy vibe similar to walking into an old musty cabin. The taste begins with bitter grain. There is a dark sourness to it, similar to that of black coffee, but without the flavoring of such. The middle peaks with that faint fruitiness from the nose, but is by no means well defined. It is a sugary wash. The finish rounds out with dark adjuncty grain that bites with traces of booze and a bit of toast. Rather clean, surprisingly. The aftertaste breathes distinctly of penicillin, and biting metallic grain. The body is medium and the carbonation is high, almost to the point of being offensive. There is little coating, and the mouth is left tinny, yet cooled. The abv is strong but appropriate, and the beer is not the easiest drinker.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this brew was how the flavors picked up a bit after the aroma. Through the nose we were expecting something admittedly offensive to the palate, but rather we were given a darker brew that gave a robustness of flavor that presented as somewhat integrated with the rest of the beer’s components.

The price is right and the flavor is not terrible, unless of course you drink more than a few of these in a sitting. It looks fine in a glass, the smell is inoffensive, and the taste is enjoyable although as a warning note, this beer is almost too sweet. One thing that I do enjoy a lot about this is that it has a nice creamy head that sticks around for a while after pouring.

I will not give this drink a terrible rating. I have bought this on several occasions, and it is when I am in the mood for a sweet "red" beer. For most occasions however, I would advise something else on the menu.

This one's been kicking around in the fridge for some time...

A - Pours a nice dark amber colour, finger of head with solid retention and some sticky big bubbled lacing.

S - Rather mild, but comes across sweet with toffee and butterscotch and some leafy hops on the finish.

T - Sweet alcohol dominates, with a bit of maraschino cherries. Reminiscent of Grand Marnier. Too sweet for my liking and the alcohol is way too in your face.

M - Medium bodied ale, but has a bit of a syropy feel to it. Too thick.

D - Unique flavours, but the sweetness is just too much for my liking. Alcohol is not hidden, and slaps you around a bit. I would not recommend this to anyone.

Can into Paulaner pint glass in low altitude Galway, Ireland.

A: Pours a copper-red with a five finger head of decent thickness and impressive cream. I didn't expect this thick a head from a high abv beer, much less from a garbage brewer like Bavaria.

Sm: A musty light aroma. Kind of a dirty barley scent.

T: Garbage open to foul barley. Kind of a filthy beer. Maybe some fruit that had gone off before being added. Syrupy and outright abysmal. Makes regular bavaria look better by comparison (until I remember I'd have to drink two cans of it to match the ABV).

Mf: Way too slick. Too smooth and even too wet.

Dr: Buy it to get lambasted if you dare. This is what I politely call a "student beer" - both because it tastes like it was brewed by the brewer's students and because only broke-ass students would drink it. Laughably bad for the style. The price could be worse.

Ah, Bavaria, the cheeky Dutch brewer who messed with FIFA and Budweiser at this past year's World Cup, with orange summer dress clad blonde guerrilla marketers, at that.

This beer pours a clear, dark golden amber hue, with two fingers of foamy, rocky ecru head, which leaves some nice Swiss cheese lace around the glass as it recedes - a lot better looking than I was expecting. It smells faintly of sticky caramel apple, and not much else, The taste is sweet, distressingly cloying caramel malt, more overripe apple fruity/sugary/turned essence, and warming phenolic alcohol. Jeez, it made me do the involuntary head shake, usually reserved for the biggest and baddest AD/ISs (or Malt Liquors). The carbonation is quite light, the body like malty low-acid fruit juice, smooth, I guess, but filmy and clingy as hell. It finishes sweet, boozy, and kind of medicinal, a cough medicine analogy starting to crystallize.

Holy Jebus! What a Jekyll and Hyde of a beer! Looks like one thing, and tastes like one unholy other. It's just hard to reconcile, so attractive on the outside, evil on the inside. The (to paraphrase a tad) beer your mother warned you about. Like the World Cup stunt, it's all just show.

Appearance is dark red with medium head. Smell is malty and fruity.

Good beginning, now for the downside.

Has a very strong, sweet, syrup like taste with a hint of fruit. High alcohol is apparent. Very thick body with little carbonation, sweetness lingers in the aftertaste.

Overall, this is like malt liquor but more sugary. It's cheap and gets you loaded if you can get through the taste.

A- This has an impressive thick foamy head that slowly dissolves into a puffy off white layer about a quarter inch thick on top of the brew. The color of the beer itself is clear and has the typical reddish hues that should be expected. There is some decent lacing clinging to the glass as well. The only knock might be the amount of perceived carbonation that is rising to the top.

S- Very sweet malty aromas dominate, and I do agree with a prior assesment, in that it has some candy apple like quality to it. It also has a moderate boozy smell to it and no hops are noticeable.

T- This is way to sweet for me, that's for sure. It opens up with tons of brown sugar that is mixed into overripe berries....strawberry juice to be exact. Once you get past this initial shock (and I mean that literally, it made me shiver), there is some faint malt and an alcoholic medicinal quality to this. It finishes sweet as well...just overpowering sugar.

M- This is thick with syrup like sweetness initially but it becomes more medium towards the end. The carbonation is actually quite creamy but the alcohol really comes through here.

D-It's like someone took Robitussin and let it sit in the sun for 8 1/2 hours, then added grain alcohol to it! I'm not sure if I can finish this one. It's a party beer and might appeal to the crowd who just wants to get plastered. I do admit it's a little better with salty food, such as I'm having with this beer in the last bit of this review, but I am not enjoying this. Definitely the worst red I've tried and I won't be getting this one again. Pass! (I ended up dumping the last half of my pint....just couldn't do it)

A new(?) addition to the NSLC's Beers of the World wall, and like a sucker, I picked it up.

Pouring results in a reddish amber color, with lots and lots of bubbly white head. Head slowly evaporates, leaving sporadic lacing

Some minor caramel malt scent.

Taste is a malty sweetness, slightly syrupy in nature. Taste is also very strong - you can tell this has alcohol from the flavor. The strength does not leave a good flavor in the mouth.

It is indeed a 'strong lager', but not in any enjoyable way. Reminds me extensively of cheaper beers I bought earlier in my youth, except stronger in flavor.

A-Pours a nice clear amber color w/thick off-white head of mousse. A few small bits of sticky lacing, decent retention.

S-Sweet roasty malt, bits of mineral, various fruit (red apple, berries) faint candy sugar, faint alcohol.

T&M-Sweet malt that opens up to a generic fruit bouquet but immediately after gets much sweeter. The finish is syrupy and sweet, and the aftertaste is also sweet. The malt imparts a nice toasty quality that is unfortunately dominated by the sweetness, and there is also a faint medicinal quality, and some warm alcohol in the finish. Robust carbonation.

D-Some redeeming qualities, but too sweet. Again, this seems like one of those beers that I'm afraid young kids will get trashed on because of the abv and the sweetness.

Actually impressed by the head on this beer. looks good. The beer is a deep amber colour. I want to drink it.

On the nose, I get a nice balance that favors sweet smelling malt complexity over a sharp hoppy aroma. No warning signs here. Solid. Nothing surprising or flawed, just standard. Somewhat enticing.

I really liked the first couple sips of this beer. It's not great, but there's a brown sugary flavour and an alcoholic warmth that follows which is a plus for me. A good, inexpensive winter warmer. But. Once the carbonation dies down, it loses its lustre and its high alcohol content peeks through in a bad way.

When all is said and done, this brew is too sweet, although it does have nice qualities and is a worthwhile beverage for the curious. Probably one of the better 500ml import cans available in Alberta. If you don't take this beer too seriously, you might enjoy it.

Pours the color of bourbon, maybe a little darker. The head is surprisingly long lasting, leaving a good smattering of lace. The aroma is sweet, a bit fruity and boozy, simplistic. The taste is a tremendously sweet wreck. Its almost lacticy in its character, very sweet. Some heat from the alcohol and some stewed vegetables are also present. The mouthfeel is coating and cloying. The finish is sweet and mildy alcoholic.

This is a very nice looking but terrible tasting cheap lager. I won't try it again.

500 ml can from Cafam. Smells like slightly roasted malts and some red licorice with a little caramel. Pours to a bright amber with a 3 finger head with great structure, stands well and leaves a nice lacing on the glass. Taste is sharp malts with some bitterness and the AC is most prevalent. Finish is better than the start with some caramel. This seems more like a jump-starter than a a brew. Starts to mellow as it warms up but it still doesn't get there. Mouthfeel is smooth but has a problem getting past the taste. Nothing I'd buy again.

Pours a bright red with a bleached white cap of decent froth. The aroma is fruity, albiet I'm not one to discern which fruit it is. Maybe some cherries? It's pretty arbitrary. There is also some hay/grass/floral aroma that is tough to place. Tastes sweet, like the candied cherries, red pepper jelly...its sweet and too much so for me. Cloying, and no fucking way I'm drinking this whole can. Liquid dessert gone wrong. Blearrg!

Poured from a 500 ml silver can, dark transluscent chestnut/amber in hue, tall light spongy cinnamon head. Sticky patchwork lacing down the glass.

Um, I could smell this stuff from the glass right after the pour about a foot away, kind of a funk. Upon closer and more wary inspection it offers up yeast and alcohol and some detergent. Sweet and sour grainy malts are exposed as it warms.

Hey, who wants homebrew? Tastes just like a high test batch of red ale homebrew from a basic doubled up kit. Simple generic sweet malt combined with much heat from the alcohol, with a sour finish. Get's more difficult to swig down after the first 1/4 of the glass. Soapy aftertaste reminiscent of detergent.

Mouthfeel is half decent, medium-bodied and smooth with some burn from the alcohol, although I had to brace myself for another sip just to double check.

Well then, it's been a while since I've done a sink pour, but that's exactly where the last half of this "red strong beer" is headed. Cloyingly sweet to start, with a "bitter beer face" sour finish that can induce intermittent gagging, or at least I'm speaking from personal experience. User results may vary.

Having the name barvaria on the can i thought that it would be a great tasting beer. It looks okay but oh no does not taste well.
A beer does not go down well when its reminds you of cough syrup. So i had to push myself to finish it, pity the ratings dont go lower. I'd put 0 for drinkability and 0.5 for taste.

From a ½ liter can, this beer is a deep red color with a decent head. Despite reservations (the pale 8.6 was truly awful), this is an enticing and and attractive looking brew. The aroma, though, brings the goodness to an abrupt halt. Sharp and unpleasant alcohol are the first smell, followed by misplaced fruits. There's a lot of ripe berries and cherry smells, but they're not backed by any malt qualities. Instead, they're lonely and misplaced esters, lost in a sea of harsh ethanol. The taste is intensely sweet, like an over-syruped soda-pop, only with a lot of harsh alcohol. The beer is relatively full in body, and the finish is warm. Despite appearances, this is not a good beer.
