On tap at the Portland Brewhouse.
A: Served a bronze color with a decent thick head that fades slowly to nice lacing.
S: Aroma of some hops and malt sweetness and a bit of herbs in the background.
T: Taste is a mix of citrus and malt sweetness with a hint of honey. Decent bitterness and a dry finish.
F: fairly medium body, quite smooth and creamy.
O: Nice golden ale, nothing to rave about, but is good for a few.
Serving type: on-tap

A - Mid to dark amber colour under a finger of dense white head and then some quality lacing.
S - Light malt and floral hops.
T - Follows the nose with mild honey like malt before some grassy hop bitterness takes over.
M - Low to medium level of carbonation, quite light body.
O - Pretty pedestrian pale ale, nothing outstanding but beats the macros if there are no better options.

A - Poured a darkish golden colour with an off white frothy head that reduced fairly quickly to a thin cover and a little lacing.
S - Not much at all really except for maybe a little honey and sweet malt. very disappointing.
T - Definite honey and citrus flavour with the sweet malt but very bland indeed.
M - Medium carbonation and light to medium body
O - Not one I would recommend. Very bland and tasteless and rather disappointing.

Appearance: Darker golden body with a small amount of white head (1 cm) which disappears a little too fast. Small amount of lacing down the glass.
Aroma: On the bad side of average. Quite yeasty, with some green plant-like undertones.
Taste: Sharp, minerally, tangy and a hint of another taste I couldn't identify (salty?). I was seriously thinking about not finishing the glass!
Mouthfeel: Light and dry body, a bit too carbonated.
Drinkability: Could hardly finish the glass. Have accidentally ordered it again (on-tap) and it was just as bad (I got mixed up with the JS Amber Ale, which I like).

BA it's been a while! Well it has indeed and today I'm turning my keen beer senses to a brew that seems a strangely obvious pick for a review but has thus far eluded my cold beer-goggle glare: Old Mate Squires Golden Ale. And why is it that this fine brewers brew has dodged the bruview bullet? Could it be that I was oblivious to the beer when it was right in front of me, i.e. couldn't see the tavern for the tap? Or could it be that this was always my least favourite JS brew and I've waited till now to finally rate it? ... Intrigue!
Poured from a 345ml bottle into a tulip pint.
A: Hmmm... the clue is in the name with this brew: golden body with a chalk white head reducing to an ale'esque lacing.
S: Smells like the floor of an English pub, the type of noxious mix of stale ale, yeast re-fermenting and vegetable detritus... not as unappealing as you would expect but certainly not winning any awards. Still not as bad as the trash heap aroma that wafts off of most Aussie macro lagers.
T: Grain malt fore-notes with a smattering of toffee apple hints and finished with a light dry hop note. The bitterness is quite mild and leaves me thinking that this is the "let's introduce young metro guys to beer" kind of ale. Disappointing as I remembered it (the memory of taste can be surprising at times).
M: Light and watery, but with a fairly accurate carbonation for an ale.
D: Bland. In the world of Aussie macro lager's - i.e. the local pub - this brew is a Godsend. In reality though this brew is hardly a contender for any award. Again it is the beer that JS make for the masses to try and convert them over to the wonderful world of craft and if it allows JS to continue making their excellent IPA, Porter and Pilsner then I will support the cause, otherwise I have no reason to drink it.
