Reviewed from notes. Had on-tap at Mr. Dunderbak's. Served in a goblet.
NOTE: This beer was served with some bright green sweet syrup on the side. Apparently a German traditional way of serving the beer. Tasting notes are without the syrup added.

A: Very pale clear yellow, with a small white head that fades to foam flecks. Low visible carbonation.

S: Mild, lemon tart, cracker (reminds me of saltines) malt, and a light peachy fruit with undertones of funk. Simple, but smells good.

T: Follows the nose. A lemony, lightly tart and a bit sour, with the cracker malt and tart at the end.

M: Light bubbly mouthfeel, essentially no noticeable alcohol, and good carbonation sensation.

O: This is a quality berliner. I'm not sure I picked up a lot of Brett funk in the flavor, but I didn't have the base beer to compare. As a side note, before the last quarter of the glass, I added a small amount of the green syrup to compare. The sweetness completely hid the sour and tart aspects of the beer, which to me ruined the appeal of the brew. I would not add the syrup again, but it was an interesting service. Per the bartender, it is served that way in Germany to make the sour beer more appealing to children.

Oh yes. Gimme, gimme that Brett. Nice funky tones, but mild ones. Some banana wrapped up in there. Super smooth and extremely easy to drink. This is a nice Berliner Weisse. Too bad we can't have more of them like this. Or, just more of them, period.

On tap at Z Bar in State College PA, poured into a goblet glass.

A: Golden Straw Hue, Passes Most Light, White Head Ring, Some Lacing

S: Peach, Tropical Fruit, Funky, Mild Wheat

T: Wheat, Pineapple, Brett, Mild Wheat

M: Average Carbonation, Light to Medium Bodied, Semi Drying, Mildly Acidic

Overall, WOW....that is one of the best Berliner Weiss beers I have ever had. Mildly Sour, Funky, Fruity all rolled into one.

On-tap at Churchkey in DC, poured into a tumbler.

A- Pours a hazy light yellow color with a finger of white head that quickly recedes, leaves little lacing.

S- Lemon, lots of wheat and light barnyard funk, a citrusy tartness is also noticeable.

T- Similar to the nose, lemony citrus, lactic acidity with bretty funk and wheat.

M- Light-bodied, smooth feel with a dry finish.

O- I really enjoyed this beer. It's a very tasty, drinkable Berliner, definitely give this a try if you see it.

Served in a Schneider weizen glass at Local Option.

I remember having this back-to-back with the un-brett-ed version, but I never got around to getting my thoughts together. Here we go a-rectifyin'. This stuff pours a clear pale straw topped by a finger of white foam. The nose comprises lemon rind, wheat, light brett, and grass. The taste brings in more of the same, along with a light but distinct cut of tart lemon. The body is a hefty light, with a light moderate carbonation and a dry, sticky finish. Overall, a very nice B-Weiss, one that seems helped a touch by the brett addition.

1555th Review on BA
Draft to Tulip

@Beer Revolution, Oakland, CA

App- This was highly pale yellow. Looked a lot like a AAL and was very clear. The head...oh wait. Wasnt one. Small ring of bubbles. Just kinda awkward looking.

Smell- It had some nice aromatics but was just kinda meh to me. Was a bit earthy, grassy and lactic. Didnt wow me. Was lacking depth, interesting notes of lemon, wheats.

Taste- Well its a very tasty beer. Not really sure how the aromatics drop off and then this tastes vibrant, lemony and a bit floral with a bit of tea. Just quite tasty. Not quite Fritz 1809 level but still above average.

Mouth- A bit of a thin body with a high carbonation level. Residual grape juice flavors with a bit of grassy lemon.

Drink- This was all over the place with its individual parts. All that mattered is that it tastes good. Probably would want a bottle but wont actively seek it out.

From 09/21/12 notes. Had this on tap at Max's in Baltimore at their German Beerfest.

a - Pours a hazy straw yellow color with one inch of white head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of lemon, citrus, floral hops, grains, earthy notes, and light lactic notes. Pretty nice; not as sour or funky as I was hoping though.

t - Tastes of citrus, lemon, funk, lactic notes, sour lemons and fruit, grains, and floral hops. Much better than the nose with some nice funk and sourness to it. Certainly not too sour, but enough to make it enjoyable.

m - Light body and low carbonation. Light acidic notes, but overall pretty easy to drink.

o - Overall a pretty nice berliner. Not super sour or anything, but the taste has some light sourness and funk to it which I liked a lot. Worth checking out and I would have it again.

On tap at Blue Monk. A good tartness, akin to an unsweetened lemonade, with a little brett and I believe malt to make it drinkable. Very good drinkability, suitable carbonation. Yellow body with a small white head. A good representation of what is often a yummy style.

Served from tap to 11oz tulip at Tapestry in Philadelphia.

Smells like your typical Berliner Weiss. Innocent with a hint of citrus and wheat.

Taste blows me away. Sour, Tart lemon that puckers my cheeks, in a refreshing and give me more kind of way. Incredible.

This beer is perfect for almost everybody. A must buy if you see it.

On tap at Blue Monk in Buffalo, NY

Appearance. Hazy very light straw in color. Served with 2 fingers of head. Light enough to be almost luminescent.

Smell. Very clean sour, with lemon juice and heavy brett influence. Some very light bready malts in the background, white bread.

Taste. Starts off hugely sour, to a point where it cuts any other flavors out for a while. The sourness is beyond anything else that I have ever had before, except maybe those warheads that were popular amongst my friends as a child. The only thing to be said is that the this is a super clean, dry and refreshing sourness. After this initial wave there is a very nice, simple, clean shortbread-like malt presence that balances out the sourness. Brett presence throughout. Dry and crisp finish... refreshing.

Mouthfeel. Very thin in body with a moderate to high amount of carbonation. Overall the mouthfeel aids in the refreshment aspect of the beer.

I wouldn't want to bash this one for being overly sour, as it is a berliner weisse. I just wish is held on to the hint of malt that you get just before the finish.

Pours a bright golden straw color with some haze, bubbly and prickly white head. Scent leads with a big push of tart, acidic and earthy funk, took a while before light notes of sweet breads and faint candied lemony citrus came through. Taste brings bold tart and acidic notes, combines with moderate earthy funkiness, fresh dried grain and hay, light fruitiness with some candied lemon and a touch of white grape. Lighter side of medium bodied, bubbly and refreshing, bone dry. Overall a fantastic surprise that exceeded any expectations, unique take on style and impressively refreshing despite the boldness. Another winner from this brewery.

On tap.  Served in a goblet.  The color is very light straw.  There is a nice bubbly white head.

The aroma has some wheat with a touch of zesty citrus rind.

The taste starts out mild but finishes with strong lemon tartness.  There is a good dose of wheat and malt flavor as well.

The body is light with crisp carbonation.

This is really tasty.  Nice blend of malt and yeast flavor.

Over at the Pride.

Pours a pale straw color with a good sized white head, fades at a slow rate, doesn't leave any lacing on the glass though.

Smell has a nice funk to it, mostly lemon citrus zest that practically tickles the nose.

Taste starts out with a sour tartness on the tongue, makes you pucker a bit but isn't overwhelming, Brett funk seeps in on the aftertaste, finishes dry and clean, carbonation is a touch high but is expected with a thin body, quite refreshing.

Enjoyed on tap at the Armsby Abbey.

A - Poured into a tulip a clear straw hue with a thin white head that leaves nice halo/clouding.

S - Quite funky with definate Brettanomyces Lambicus. Past the funk there is some very nice bready/yeast/wheat qualities.

T - The delicious funk upfront followed by the yeast and bready malts. Nice lemons and light honey, with nice musty bread. Really sour upfront with berliner weiss immediately following.

M - Very light and crisp. Super sour upfront with a nice wheat finish.

O - This was a very interesting beer. Really enjoyed the initial intense sourness followed by the normal wheat qualities. Really enjoyable beer.

One of my favorite beers. Mouth-puckeringly sour, refreshing as hell and packed full as flavor for something at 3%. The light fruit flavors combine well with the wheat and grass, creating a citrus and grain sour bomb. While more intense than your average Berliner Style Weiss, it's still the peak of the style. Phenomenal.

A sharply refreshing tart wheat based ale that breaks the mold of conventional Hefeweizens and continues the increasingly rare Berlinerweiss traditions.

As with most wheat beers, a hazy canary yellow hue allows for a diffused glow of light to penetrate. A dainty white glaze of foam provides the thinnest sheet across the surface of the beer and holds true form the first half of the session before succuming to the acidity of the beer. No real lace evident.

Musty grasses, lemon and lime, fresh straw and hay all give a glimpse into the oddly appealing scent. Very raw, rustic, and lightly bready and yeasty the beer carries a sweaty brine scent that reminds me of Belgian Lambics.

Flavors are much more intense with fruit tartness of lemons and limes, but with the earthy flavor of hay, straw, and grasses before turning lightly musty-dusty, before the salty brine and intense tartness sets in. The intensity of tartnss nearly locks the jaws on the first sip and causes a clean acidic sweat to bead on the cheeks. After the palate acclimates to the beer (two or three sips) the intensity calms and the beer reveals a very crisp, clean, and refreshing tartness as a good subsitute for lemonaids.

The sharp and acidic feel disguises an underpinning of lightly bready malt texture and timid creamy carbonaiton at the on set. But the finish of palate-stripping acidity, astringency of lime pith, and thin sourness makes this beer very clean and challenging to the mouthfeel.

A delicious sour German wheat beer with a plethera of complexity packed into a 3% beer. More of these beers are welcome in my glass!

I had this on-tap at Max's. Served in a taster glass.

Appearance: Pours a clear light yellow with a finger of fluffy white head and good retention.

Smell: Tart citrus, I'm picking up lime. The beer also smells a little bit sweet.

Taste: Extremely tart up front, like sucking on lemons. I wouldn't say there is much body, but given the abv there is an unbelievable amount of flavor. The finish is very sour.

Mouthfeel: Light body with very strong carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: Very easy to drink. Tart and refreshing. I could literally drink this all night long.

On tap at Max's.

The beer pours a pale gold color with light lacing and modest head retention. The beer seems very well carbonated, with good action. Mouthfeel is quite wheaty, with a sour overlay. There's a hint of honey as well. The flavor profile is a real jolt and is incredibly tart. I get considerable lemon and lime, but also something of a yeasty, french champagne flavor. The amount of flavor this 3% abv. beer delivers... it's nothing short of astonishing. Mouthfeel is light and tittilating, with a fairly long, tart finish. Drinkability is exceptional of course.

Yummm... this is an absolute treat. Great stuff!

Had on tap at Max's Taphouse in Baltimore, and merged with review from Ebenezers.

Big creamy head, quite clear watery pale pilsner color. Nice lacing as the head slowly fades.

Nose light sour fruits, grape skin, light funk, light lemon, light straw like malts, and hint of creamy like malt profile.

The younger version at Max's had nice sour tart fruity, bit of funk but not a lot, sour dough, light lemon, crisp, little flemmy finish, nice tart light fruit, dry bready finish. The older one from Ebenezers added a ton of sourness, damn sour! Light lemony puckering tart fruit, light golden malts, hint of a vinous like tart fruit flavor. Very dry as well with a bready malt taste. Finish of bone dry, bready malt taste, long tart sour lemon finish. some acidity and very mouth watering.

Mouth is lighter bodied, mouth puckering and light decent carb. Bone dry.

Overall nice, super sour, move fruits and malts, great display of the lambicus wild yeast, without anything else really stepping in, but seems to lack much profile other than the sour fruit.

Sampled at Redlight Redlight; January 2011
This arrives from the tap with a pale blonde color that is quite hazy and it is topped by a big, frothy, white head. This has a very dirty-foot type of nose to it that is musky and musty. The finish of the aroma sees a hay and musty grain like note to it. After a bit of time I get a solid lemon-like tartness to the aroma.

The beer tastes quite dry, which is accentuated by a lactic acid tartness, the fact that it is so light bodied and that it has a spritzy carbonation; all in all this makes for a very refreshing brew. Somehow this seems milky, I am not sure why but it seems to have something to do with the lactic acidity. This really doesn't seem any different than the regular version of this beer to me.

On tap at the Brasserie V in Madison.

Poured into a Bayerischer Bahnhof Berliner Style Weiss glass. Pours a slightly hazy, pale yellow color. Develops a nice 1/2 inch, white colored head, that is thick and creamy with great retention.

Aroma is fairly typical of a Berliner Weiss, with some nice tart fruit aromatics and slight graininess, but there is also a nice barnyard funk from the brett, adding some great character, well above many other Berliner Weiss' I've had.

The flavor is incredibly light and delicate and quite refreshing. Some nice, tart, green fruit character, even a hint of lemon-like citrus. Some well balanced, grain flavors followed immediately by the unmistakable, funky character of the brettanomyces. Just incredibly smooth and easy drinking.

The body is very light with an effervescent level of carbonation. It truly is impressive the amount of flavors a skilled brewer can pack into such a small beer. I challenge anyone who thinks a beer with less than 5% ABV can't be packed with flavor to try this beer. It's just so delicious, easy drinking and just an overall pleasant experience. And the best part is, I can have 3 or 4 or 5 and hardly feel a buzz! :)

On tap at kraftwork. Nice another berliner wiss. I'm always looking for this style.

A- comes to me with a nice finger or so of brilliant white frothy head that settles after the first sip to leave a few wisps on top a sudsy ring. Hazy pale yellow in color with some sweet bubbles holding on the side of the glass.

S- crisp bright lemon zest and juice with a lightly sweet yet clean wheat hit. Grassy and fresh like a lawn after the spring rain.

T- light tart open with a sour and bite but never over baring. Crisp and fresh lemon juice with a very simple yet well balance wheat sweetness.

M- light body and carb with a super kickass pucker that goes far enough to get the juices flowing but not too far that you need to pull the drawls from yo ass.

O- this brew is tits. One of my favorites of the style to date. Ill be having a few of these. Philly is the best beer town.

On tap in chalice glass. Fizzy white head that dissipated after about one minute. Ever so slight lacing on the glass. Yellow color. It was dim in the bar so I could not determine if it was hazy or not. Tart aroma.

Effervescent carbonation. Nice bite of bubbles. Sour, but not as sour as I had anticipated. Very smooth. I'm surprised this has been fermented with brett. I don't get much barnyard or earthiness. Very crisp and clean. Slight slight slight malt. No hop bitterness.

Very drinkable. I could have this all night. A delicious refreshing beer. I think this would be amazing after a hot day mowing the lawn even.

On-tap at Prime 16 into an Unibroue tulip.

A: Clear, pale straw body with plenty of effervescence fueling an inch of fine white head. Decent retention but almost no lace. Looks like a Berliner Weiss to me.

S: Clean, tart, and well-balanced. The lightly floral Bretty funk mixes with the lactic sourness to create a pleasant fruitiness reminiscent of grape skins, apple, and peach. It's definitely not as intense as I'd like it to be, but it's light and delightful.

T: Starts out with some generic lactic tartness, then finishes with some earthy Brett. Fresh, sour aftertaste. Nowhere near as complex as the nose, but seriously clean and refreshing.

M: The body is quite light, yet made to feel substantial due to the abundance of creamy carbonation. Lovely.

D: The Brett addition makes this far more interesting than the base version, and yet the supreme crispness and refreshment have been maintained. Stupendously drinkable, I wish this were cheap and available in mass quantities all summer long.

Notes: I enjoyed the regular version of this beer when it was on tap a few months back, and I greatly prefer this version. The Brett really adds a huge amount of complexity and flavor, and yet the pure refreshment isn't diminished. Great example of the style, plain and simple.

Cheers!

10 oz poured into a small pint tulip glass

a - pale white with the tint of yellow, clear yet cloudy. a frothy white head tops it and leaves a nice ring of lacing around the glass.

s - funk funk funk. hints of lactic activity is in there as well.

t - the first taste is a mineral like saltiness that compliments a light fruity funky reminiscent of tutti frutti and leather it with a nice lactic tang. as it warms the funk fades, but the fruitiness remains enough to accent the full force of the lactic acid throughout the beer. a nice dough like maltiness lingers on the palate in the finish

m - the body is medium-light and highly carbonated for a beer on tap I'm guessing approaching levels of ~2.7 volumes of CO2.

d - an excellent example of the style. the funk of the Brettanomyces is enough to highlight the nice lactic tang of the beer without getting in the way.
