The main thing that is surprising about McHenry's, is that it's located in McHenry. Talk about an out of the way location for a good quality bottle shop.
As one walks in from the parking lot, there is a sizeable wine area to your immediate left, with a good size liquor and beer area in the back to the left. There is a long low row of shelves with beer on both sides of the aisle, with a large cold box area as well. About half of the latter is made up of macro swill, but nevertheless, this place has a sizeable selection of craft beer and imports (Belgian mostly). On this day I saw a very nice selection of Stone, Lagunitas, Heavy Seas, and what I was looking for, Goose Island. They appeared to have just over a case of BCBS stout 4 packs set out, but with a good selection of the core beers and belgian style stuff. They had run out of Cherry Rye (unfortunately), but I snagged the last bottle of Coffee bourbon stout (which was thrown into the mix during Stone Soup).
As for the layout, this place looks like a million other liquor stores I've been to, but everything is nicely laid out and organized, and it's well lit. Customer service is old time liqour store as well. You're pretty much left to yourself while perusing the aisles... if you need help, the expectation is that you come to the cash register and ask for it.
Prices are OK I thought. 4 packs of BCBS were $21.49, while my bottle of coffee bourbon stout was $18.
This is definitely a high quality store in a very out of the way location. It's a hassle to get to from my home in Morgantown, but given the quality, I'll likely make the effort.

Checked this place out after biking at Big Bear. Living around Morgantown, this place is actually probably the closest I can get to good six packs and bombers. They had Dogfish Head, Stone, Dales Pale Ale, G'Knight, Southern Tier to name a few. Like others have said, they are more of a wine and liquor store, but they definitely have a decent craft beer section compared to what else is around the area.
They really don't compare to whats around Hagerstown and the DC area, but for Western MD and WV, its the best bet.
Was able to grab the last DFH 120 minute from them as well as a four-pack 90 minute.

This is a great source to get some good brews. I have found several beers here I cannot find in other parts Western Maryland or North East West Virginia. The staff is quite friendly and helpful, and are willing to help find brews they don't stock. They also have a limited supply of home brew equipment which is a plus if your in a pinch for essential equipment while in the Deep Creek Lake area.
It's location is convenient if one is in need of decent brews to take on a camping trip in Maryland, West Virgina, or even Southern Pennsylvania.

Always stop here whenever we stay in the Deep Creek area. Good place to pickup cases, sixers, and singles.
Pretty good selection of some "common" macros...Troegs, Flying Dog, etc...as well as a modest selection of imports, Belgians. Prices are a few bucks cheaper than in PA on select singles and sixers. Cases are about the same.
Never had an issue with service, one gentleman helped us find a somewhat secluded church on our way to a wedding there.
Not much to say really, there isnt a whole lot of other options in the area (as far as I know) besides bringing a ton of beer with you (we usually go for quantity>quality on our trips to the area), but this gets the job done.

If you head to wisp resort in deep creek Maryland this is a must stop. Picked up a case of nugget nectar and a few dogfish 120s. (the perfect liquid courage for the ski slopes) large selection of spirits, wine and macro swill as well. nice micro selection and a pretty good value considering we are at a resort. The location is excellent because its pretty much at the bottom of the slopes. Staff was helpful and courteous. We will most definetly return here when on our yearly ski trip to wisp resorts.
Rogue bombers, smuttynose, several of the more common belgians.

Not a bad selection of beers, several of which I can get closer in PA, but here I can get sixers and 12 packs, instead of having to get a whole case. (They did have some cases, too.)
Many regional brews: Troegs and Dead Reckoning for example (I picked up a 12 pack of Troegs sampler and a bomber of their Mad Elf). Also had Sam Adams, Rogue, and quite a few others.
Nice imports: Scottish historic pack and quite a few decent Belgians.
Service was sub-par. The lady at the counter probably wouldn't have batted an eye if I had a railroad spike through my skull, as bored as she was.
Still, a nice place to pick up some good beer.

Nice, big place. As usual, more wine than beer.
Clean, fairly well organized and well lit. Prices clearly marked.
Back room had a large reefer section with mostly six packs and some singles.
Right next to that was a shelve of singles at room temp and also stacks of cases that I am not sure if they were for sale or not, but it wasnt an issue,
Trogs, Victory, Smuttynose, Chimay, Ommegang, DFH, Abita, Sam Adams, Rogue, Stome, Sierra Nevada, Clipper City. Many, many others.
Good prices and service. They even let me use the restroom that was for employees only.

This is a nice brightly lit liquor/wine mega-store. I'm sure anyone vacationing in the Deep Creek area would appreciate this place. We took a drive from Fairmont, WV just to check out this shop and the new Mountain State Brewing location.
Beer selection is fair to medium. Lots of Northeast breweries represented. Troegs, Otter Creek, Smuttynose, etc, and then a fair amount of imports. You are sure to find a cold six pack or a single or two that tickles your fancy. Not a place to stock up big time but a nice place for a random mini-haul.
Helpful folks are all about the place. I saw at least 4 employees in my 20 minute visit.

McHenry Beverage Shoppe is located in McHenry, Maryland, but really it is just the Deep Creek Lake area. You can see the large hills of Wisp ski resort directly behind the store. The outside of the store is unassuming. Just your regular liquor-store-in-a-shopping-
center. But wait until you step inside...
As far as decor and layout goes, this is without a doubt the finest liquor store I have ever been in. Every inch of the store is so clean, so well lit, so NEW looking. A lot of attention was paid to aesthetics. The owners obviously put a large amount of love into this venture. The custom made wine racks and shelving - beautiful. Any liquor store that takes pains to include a refrigerated cheese & fruit section gets a perfect 5 for quality. Excellent. Some other bonuses are the extensive liquor selection, and they even took care to include a homebrew & wine-supply making section.
The service was great, as I was lucky enough to be at McHenry's on a wine tasting day, and the staff was very friendly & informative. The cashiers (which, as anyone who has been a cashier knows, is a soul-sucking job) were even bright and friendly.
For beer selection, there were 20 refridgerators, about 5 of which stocked craft beers, including, but not limited to: Anderson Valley Brewing Co, Abita, Flying Dog, Otter Creek, Pinkus, Young's, Radegast, Rogue, Chimay, Kriek, Delerium, Wolavers, Brooklyn, Wild Goose, Blue Ridge, Sierra Nevada, Samuel Adams, Samuel Smith's. In all, I counted over 30 different micro/craft brews. All of these were cold & ready to go, but there was also a whole section of shelving with room-temperature beers, which included some titles mentioned & not mentioned above.
As high-quality as this store was, the prices were very fair and reasonable. No complaints in that area at all. Everything was priced as it should have been, maybe even more reasonable, considering that the area the store is located in is rather wealthy.
This is THE store to go to if you are vacationing in the Deep Creek Lake, Maryland area. Do not miss it.

Yesterday after finishing my Ethnic Groups Essay exam, and going to the DMV to renew my Driver's License, I headed east on 68 from Morgantown toward the great state of Maryland. Only took me about 40 to 45 minutes this couple mile stretch of highway nestled between Deep Creek and Friendsville, MD in McHenry may become my beer paradise away from Morgantown. As I have talked about time and time again, the selection of beer in Morgantown is horrendous yes we have alot of beer but not alot of good beer, a few exceptions to the rule like the WVBC. However, we have nothing even close to McHenry Beverage Shoppe great wine and liquor selections along with cigars, but of course my highlight was the beer they even carry a load of good shitty beer like Pabst, Stroh's, and Schaefer. They were carrying most of the German Oktoberfests including Paulaner, Ayinger, and Hacker-Pschorr so that was key but the individual bottles availabe was most of the highly sought after Rogue, Ommegang, Young's, 3 Chimay's under seven bucks for 750ml, Affligem Dubbel, Duvel. I can't get any of the beers I just named in Morgantow, so this place was awesome in my book very happy with the selection. Nobody approached me but then when I asked for a box to carry all of my big bottles out the owner was very friendly and helpful from that point on. Good people family owned well taken care of no outdated bottles these are all major reasons to stop if in the general vicinity very nice shoppe.
