There's two distinct atmospheres to this place - summer with the deck open and young people flock to it, and winter with the deck closed and grizzled older locals are hanging out in a dark room (even with the windows). Most, however, are actually really nice people... just doesn't look inviting when stepping in the door.
That aside, the rest is the same:
Waitstaff don't seem to care about you if you look under 35 or aren't their friends - I have had two occasions where I went with the GF (now fiance), was seated and put in a drink order for both of us, only to wait an hour for a warm and bland beer for one of us while the other had to wait some more.
The beer selection is actually fairly decent, even if the quality of some of the aforementioned beer isn't. However, being as this is a review of the place and not of the beers/beauty is in the eye of the beerholder, I'm leaving it at that.
The menu looks fairly appetizing, the few times I've actually been given one when seated. However, when the food eventually comes out, even if prepared properly, it's usually uninspiring - bland burgers, super greasy fried foods... definitely have gotten a little sick after eating there on at least two occasions.
Oddly enough, I went a few times with my parents, and it's like a 180 degree reversal - beer was still hit/miss, but service and food were good. Still scratching my head about that...

I wasn't very impressed with this place at all. Dive bar vibe, or at best an old bar that is way past it's prime, and has never been updated. On the plus side, there are a lot of windows, and the view of the city at night was quite impressive. There was a good-sized bar and plenty of table space, and a separate pool room where smoking is permitted. I know an establishment can't really control its clientele, but the people here were really seedy/trashy, and it was just a pretty uncomfortable experience all over.
As far as beer goes, they did have quite a few selections on tap, and available in bottles for take out. But the quality wasn't there. Most of the stuff was just standard swill, with the Bourbon Barrel Barleywine being the only real deviation from the norm, and really the only brew even remotely worth writing home about.
Service was pretty sketchy as well. The bargirl seemed to hate life, and wasn't very attentive. Maybe she was having a bad night, I don't know, nor do I want to. At least the food service was decently quick. Menu consisted of mainly comfort foods, decent burger options...I think I got the black & bleu burger, which was good, but I've had better. I think the wife got the pulled pork which she seemed to enjoy.
Prices were decent, though for the quality of the beer, I'd say not worth it.
Overall, this is a place I'd never want to go back to. Worth a pop in? I guess, but I wouldn't really recommend it. Might as well just get a 12 pack of Bud Lite and go watch WWE in your hotel room instead. Legend has been around for a while, so apparently they have dug themselves into a comfortable and profitable rut with no intention of upping their game or evolving with the craft beer scene.

Good place with a great view of downtown Richmond. The inside atmosphere is just fine, but the time to check this place out is during decent weather when you can sit outside. The beer selection is pretty good, and everything is brewed in-house. The food is decent, and nothing is extravagantly priced. Highly recommended.

The patio/beer garden is one of the best places in town to have a beer on a sunny afternoon. Legend is the oldest surviving craft brewery in Richmond, and they do a decent job on the beer. The food is standard bar fare, and there's nothing especially notable about it, more's the pity. The prices are fine for what you get. The selection rating is based on the fact that they serve only Legend beer, as you would expect, so you have one example of each style they're currently brewing.

Located in an industrial section of town, Legend is commercial brewery w/a restaurant/taproom located upstairs. They also had some outdoor patio seating.
The atmosphere was an interesting mix between German beer hall & family restaurant. Our waitress was friendly, knowledgeable about the beers, and quick to offer up menu suggestions. The food was standard pub fare & was fine, though my particular meal was on the salty side.
The best part of going to a place like this was getting the beer sampler which was $11 for 6 selections. My sampler consisted of the Brown Ale, Porter, Golden IPA, Pale Ale, Smoked Chocolate Stout, & Winter White (seasonal wit beer). Of the 6, the Brown Ale was far & away the best of the bunch. The others all left something to be desired. At least there was enough variety for everyone's pallet.
While not exactly wowing us in any particular way, Legend Brewing Co. was a nice time & won't be harsh on your wallet.
Lastly, the place is really in need of updating the musical selections in the dining room which consisted of mostly pop hits from about 1980-88. No one should have to endure Starship's 'We Built This City' w/their beer/meal.

The Legend Brewing Company is tucked away in downtown Richmond, with a nice but small brewing operation and a very cozy restaurant attached. The view from the outside deck is breathtaking and well shaded. As for the pub, it is roomy and comfortable, with swords adorning the walls and most of the furniture made of sturdy wood. My girlfriend and I stopped in last weekend and took the tour on a Saturday afternoon. The guy (can't recall a name - tall, big bearded dude) who ran the tour was not only hilarious, but extremely knowledgeable. Next we were seated on the patio, and I had a Cascade dry hopped Pale Ale from the cask and she had a Hefeweizen. The beer and food was quite good, although the selection was limited and the server disappeared at times.
The parking lot is tiny, and I can't imagine what a pain it is to find a spot on a Friday night. Overall though we had a blast and can't wait to come back. Definitely recommend stopping in if you're in town.

Was here several times recently. Quality rating based on beer, which most of them are decent, several, mostly the seasonals are better than average.
Don't go there for the food. They have been open since 1994, and the food quality has been going down ever since. Fish-n-chips, small greasy portion; new to menu, gyro, don't bother, fake sliced "meat" and not sure what the sauce was. Calimari is good, but they don't use a marinara sauce, and the cajun dish is good.
Inside is wide-open and can get rather noisy even with a small crowd. The outside patio is nice, but not during the hot Richmond summers. Overall atmosphere is comfortable and people are friendly.
Go Friday evenings for the cask ales.

Stopped by during vacation. The inside looks like converted industrial space, yet still has a decent pub feel. It is light and airy. The outside patio also looked nice. Menu was standard pub fare. We just had appetizers, which just rated an OK. The sandwiches that some others got while we were there looked substantial. Service was quite a bit slow, which was surprising since they weren't busy. The beers were decent, although rather unexciting. Parking was very limited. The place wasn't anywhere near full, but the parking lot was.

A few years back, my wife had arranged a brewery tour with the brewmaster, jon Wampler, and I had a great time. We stopped in during a recent quick getaway to Richmond to check out houw Legend was doing. And they are doing quite well.
They have 10-12 of their usual house beers on tap (Pilsner, Pale Ale, Porter, Golden Ale, Brown Ale, etc.) along with one on cask and several other special brews (a quad and smoked chocolate stout, neither of which sounded to great on a 95+ degree day). Their beers are above average to very good generally with the porter and lager being their standouts.
There restaurant/bar area is very open and pretty large. Their outdoor patio is enormous but not shaded except by table umbrellas so we took a seat inside at a table to beat the heat. the long bar was very full, even at 3PM on a Saturday.
We ordered some nachos and a couple of their house brews. The service was good and the portions a bit small for $9 on the nachos. At least the nachos were made with actual melted cheese rather than crappy canned cheese sauce, which seems to be more and more the norm at beer establishments. The 16oz beers were $4 during happy hour, so I imagine they are $5 normally, a bit high for a brewpub on premises.
The atmosphere was pretty lively with a lot of folk, young and old, having a pretty enjoyable time on a hot Saturday afternoon.
I'm glad we stopped, but it is not the easiest place to find or get to, so make sure you google up some directions. Legend is a good honest brewhouse. Recommended.

A: This is a rather large wide open area for seating in the bar area. They also have outdoor seats available on the deck. Gives you a really nice city/James River view.
Q: Beer is fresh and the tap lines are clean so you are getting the full taste of the brews.
Ser: Should have been better but it could have been worse. Waitress knew a little about the beers when she did come around. She was quite friendly, just a tad slow with refills.
Sel: They had 7 beers on tap. 6 of the beers were regular year round beers and 1 seasonal and the Golden IPA was on cask dry hopped with Citra hops I believe. I only tried the Golden IPA on cask because I enjoy cask beer a ton. It was quite good.
Overall I enjoy heading here when I am back in town. I have heard a mix bag of opinions about the beers. I cannot quite remember the beers, this is going back 10 years now, but the IPA I had on cask a few weeks ago was great.
