A: Deep, rusty red to brownish. The head is a little subdued, forming a nice cover over the brew, and dwindling away to a solid ring.

S + T: Bready, some sweet malts in the nose, with a touch of fruitiness. Flavour is somewhat modest for the style, some nice dark fruits with a sugary sweetness.

M + D: The body is rather full, but doesn't quite have the sparkle that others have. Nonetheless, it's not a bad experience. I'd be shocked if this is indeed 11%... I didn't pick up on that kind of alcohol!

A: Clear, reddish-brown, but with an anemic head in spite of an aggressive pour. A tiny amount of lacing clings to the walls of the glass.

S: Dried fruit, molasses, and alcohol. And not much else.

T: Very sweet, almost sugary up front. A hint of orange. Some of that molasses I smelled. And a hint of hops bitterness at the end.

M: Moist, with medium carbonation. Then the booze hits hard -- the 11% ABV is not hidden by the other flavors. The finish is a bit dry, but not unpleasant.

O: Fairly decent for the style, but the sweetness and booziness were a bit much for me (if I'm in the mood for sweet and boozy, I'll just drink dark rum!)

A: Dark brown body with some rosy hues, thin eggshell-white head with small dots of lacing.

S: Very bold caramel scent along with what smells like prune juice.

T: Very big malty flavor. It has an insane amount of sweetness, as if drinking Malta. Sweet caramel flavors, and no bitterness. A very low roasted taste, but so far in the back that it doesn't rise over the sweetness. No alcohol taste, and no phenolic tastes.

M: Very smooth and wet, full bodied, with low carbonation.

O: Overall it was a pretty good quad. It does a good job of hiding the alcohol because I didn't taste it at all. The flavor was big and malty, but it still lacked some depth and complexity that I like in big beers, especially Belgians. I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it, but I wouldn't stop somebody from buying it either.

This poured out as a basic looking brown color with a pretty good sized head on top. The retention is decent on this with some spotted clumps lingering on top of the beer as well as a light lacing on the glass. The smell of the beer is very sweet smelling, loads of dark fruit notes and bready yeast. The taste of the beer is also very sweet, almost too sweet... They're really pushing the sugars on this beer for sure. The mouthfeel is a little too carbonated I think, or maybe it's just not thick enough for the style. Overall I think it's a decent Quad, I liked having it but it's not one I would need to seek out again.

Bottle shared by Radek, 650ml from the Summer 2011 release.

Brown with some reddish highlights. Tan head. Nose is grapey, some brown sugar, dark bread and raisins. Taste has sweet malt notes, dark fruits, caramel, quite sweet with some light yeast character. Full and sweet body. A nice sweet quad, nothing too complex.

Brown coloured body with mold spore head. Yeasty sweet. Cloying sweet, caramel and sugar. A drop of citrus mid-sip. So-so drinkable.Radek's bottle.A bit light mouthfeel for this style, and not its best ambassador.Need more mouthfeel, some spice, more earthiness.

Summer 2011 vintage.

A: This poured a hazy dark copper with a little light tan head.
S: It smelled like rubbing alcohol and tart apple cider and sweet peaches, with spicy rye malt.
T: It tasted like sweet raisin and bitter oranges and tart peaches, with some alcohol and spicy rye. It had a bittersweet aftertaste with alcohol warming.
M: It was oily with moderate natural carbonation. Very nice and slick body.
D: This was a strange quad with sharp bitter and tart and sweet character in the scent and taste. It was balanced and pleasant enough, but unusual for the style. The body was great, but the alcohol was prominent, so it must be sipped. Not sure how it would age, but it was only decent fresh. Seemed like a rough first attempt at a difficult style, with no refinement or art to the brew. Better luck next time!

22 oz bomber poured into a Chimay chalice. The bottle says it was brewed for a summer 2011 release, so it's probably upwards of a year old at this point.

A: Pours a rich dark amber color, nearly the color of a brown ale but not quite there. Totally opaque, with a half finger head that dissipates quickly but maintains a thin half-film.

S: Some dark fruits are coming through, along with some floral notes. Roasted malts and perhaps a bit of citrus as well. Not overwhelming in the aroma, but there's a lot going on here.

T: Plum, raisin, sweet syrupy sugar, coat the tongue at first. There are some bready, biscuity malts. There is actually a little biterness to balance it out, and it's extremely well balanced. I realize they are different styles, but this actually reminds me a little of Sierra Nevada's Bigfoot. It hides the huge 11% abv incredibly well. I get just a little heat on the throat, but it's very well masked.

M: It's full bodied and creamy, with a surprisingly good amount of carbonation for an 11% abv beer.

This is probably my favorite beer from Legend, and I've had about a dozen different ones from them. While not as complex as some of the top Quads, there is plenty going on, the alcohol is almost unnoticeable, and there are absolutely no off tastes. It's one of the most drinkable beers I've had at this abv. It doesn't come cheap, but it's worth picking up if there's any left.

22 oz bottle from BigTomZ. This one was poured into my Dogfish Head signature glass.

Legend Brewing's Quad pours nearly an opaque auburn, with some nice cherry highlights. The khaki colored foam tops out at maybe a finger in height, and both head retention and lacing are subpar. The nose hits some, but not all of the requisite notes for the style. It's got potent aromas of plums and dark fruits, as well as candy sugar, but not much else. The flavor is a bit more varied. The dark fruit and sugar from the nose lead things off. From there, a strong phenolic clove note comes in and is a welcome balance to everything that came before it, and a slight warming sensation from a light alcohol flavor rounds out the picture. The mouthfeel on this is one of the best I've found for a Belgian style beer from an American brewer. The body is creamy, yet impressively dry for an 11%. The carbonation is subtle, yet active, though I think a touch more emphasis would really round things out nicely. I'd never heard of Legend Brewing Company before I got this beer as an extra, but they've made a very nice, traditional attempt at a Quad, and I'll welcome a chance to try another one of their beers.

Man, it's been many moons since last I sipped on a Legend brew... This one pours a deep ruby-garnet topped by a finger of off-cream foam. The nose comprises red grapes, light toffee, brown sugar, light blueberry, fig, and caramel. The taste holds notes of raisin, sweet red grape, prune, dates, dark wheat, and mandarin orange syrup. The body is a light-leaning medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a grainy feel. Overall, a surprisingly solid quad, one that drops a bit from nose to mouth, but maintains a healthy dose of tastiness. Good times.

Summer 2011 Release

A- Pours a dark reddish brown with 1 finger of fluffy khaki head that sticks around. Not much lacing but some really nice alcohol legs on the side of the glass.

S- Sweet malts up front with with a lot of Belgian yeast characters behind it. Also getting some dark sugars and molasses, grains, and some slight alcohol.

T- Once again the first thing I get is creamy sweet malts with lots of dark fruits like raisins and figs behind it. Plenty of flavors coming through of a nice strong Belgian candy sugar and molasses with a bit of alcohol fullness in the background. Has a slight oxidized taste to it, an almost metal taste but very subtle.

M- Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation and a nice wet yet slightly bitter finish.

Filled 6 days ago at Whole Foods in Charlottesville, VA.

Garnet body and cream-colored head that is both creamy and sudsy. Eventually dissipates.

Smells of booze and wheat, malt and a trace of brown sugar. as it warms, just alcohol.

Taste is potent and malty. Faintly raisiny, with some harsh alcohol presence, but overall smooth, trace of brown sugar, maybe apple. Kind of bitter, but not in a hoppy way.

Slightly textured, but pretty thin.

Decent quad, and interesting to see one coming out of a smaller brewery with lower distribution.

A- pours a burgandy color with a finger of tan head.

S- nice cake like malt aroma with notes of brown sugar and caramel. Estery belgian yeast aromas giving of dark fruit and dry raisin. Spicy phenolic alcohol on the finish. Giving a rum like quality to the nose.

T- cakey malt up front with a touch of brown sugar. Light raisin dark fruit in the middle that transitions into an assertive alcohol punch on the finish.

MF- slick oily mouthfeel with a medium body and average carbonation.

D- drinkability is average

Overall the alcohol is a little disjointed from the other flavors. I think with time it will intergrate a bit better. Also the body is a bit thinner then one would like. The flavors are there though and overall a solid quad.
