I poured this beer into my tumbler at 45 degrees. The beer poured a soft white head. The beer was a light color amber, strange for a pilsner. One thing I noticed upon reading the bottle was that the beer is suppose to be kept cold. I bought it hot from the store so I'm wondering if this messed with the taste of it. I thought the beer was really bitter and did not like it at all. Might have to try it again though like its supposed to be. I will contact Legend about this.

From notes on 02/23/12:
Can't read the freshness date as it has been partially rubbed off; Poured in a pint glass.

A - One inch white fluffy head with nice retention; Crystal clear in appearance and light gold in color; Visible carbonation within the glass; Patchy lacing left behind

S - Aroma is on the lighter side, but pleasant; Notes of spicy and herbal hops, yeast, grains, and just a bit of sweetness

T - There are flavors of plentiful spicy, herbal, and lightly minty hops, fresh baked bread, yeast, and grains; Some sweetness and bitterness are in the taste, but they are in balance with one another

M - Plenty of carbonation; Light to medium bodied; Crisp mouthfeel, though the taste does linger; Semi-dry finish

O - This isn't my favorite brew from Legend, but enjoyable nonetheless. While I think the mouthfeel was the best aspect of this beer, the flavor was solid as well with a nice showing of spicy and herbal hops. I would prefer to go for other Legend offerings before this one, but I'll give it another try in the future.

12 oz bottle poured into Pilsner glass. Bottling date of 9/22/11, so this is on the old side, but 4-5 months shouldn't kill a pilsner.

A: Pours a light amber color with a quickly dissipating one finger head. At least a shade or two darker than most other pilsners out there. It's crystal clear with some light bubbles in the glass.

S: Sliced bread and yeast smells hit the nose first, and then a sweet strawberry-like fruit smell. The aroma is pleasant, but not exceptional.

T: Lightly sweet on the front end and bitter on the back end. It's fairly well balanced, although there's not a ton of flavor, merely vague sweet and bitter tones. The 5.8 abv is noticeable. If you're going to make a pilsner this strong, I think the alcohol should be better masked than this.

M: Typical for a pilsner, a bit on the watery side.

Overall this is a workmanlike effort from Legend. It's too high in alcohol to be sessionable, but not quite flavorful enough to stand on its own.

However, I'd like to try one that's fresher than this, and if I do I will edit this review if necessary.

Draught @ Brewpub. This one pours a crystal clear golden color. There was almost no head on it, and there was no lacing. Like their lager, the beer is pretty much devoid of aroma. Faint malts and maybe some grassy hops. The taste is OK, but very uninspiring. There was a weak bitter finish, with some faint malts. I wouldn’t bother with this one. Order the Lager is you are just interested in a cold one and nothing else.

Served on-tap in a Shaker pint at Legend Brewery (Richmond, VA).

A: Clear gold with short, 1/2-finger cap of white head with good retention and several lines of lace.

S: Noble hops with only slight bready malt presence. No off aromas but just not a really strong aroma profile.

T: Pretty good flavor overall, although some sharpening of the noble hoppiness would help. More breadiness in the malt profile would help too. It's a moderately hopped pilsner at most, with more haylike qualities than sharpness. Definitely fits the German style much more than the Czech.

M: Slightly lighter than medium body which is just about right for the style. Could be drier which I think would help the drinkability somewhat.

O: Not a bad beer, but I would try their regular Lager or their Porter instead.

A: Pours a clear yellow-gold with three fingers of head that recedes into a thin ring with a little lacing.

S: Pilsner malt and biscuit aromas at first. A very slight buttery aroma follows along with a lightly bitter smell from the hops.

T: Similar to the aroma, some pilsner malt flavor at first followed by a buttery biscuit flavor. A light piny bitterness brings up the finish.

M: Light body with medium body, I wish this beer were a bit more crisp.

O: An alright pilsner, though the buttery notes are a bit unusual.

A: deep gold. clear. vivid carbonation can be seen. tight bubbly white head has good retention and leaves some nice lacing behind.

S: a definitive sweetness. even a light caramel. light spicy hop aroma. wish there was some more.

T: the sweet maltiness is very dominant. maybe a little appley? pretty much malt dominated leaving me wishing for some more hop flavor.

M: moderate carbonation on a light body.

D: drinkable, but not my favorite from legend.

My wife and I actually passed by the Legend brewhouse this past weekend on our way back from a work-related trip for her. Something clicked in my brain telling me to sample their beer since they are local and I've never tried a single one.

A: Golden, crystal clear, with a massive amoeba-shaped head that resembled a mound of shaving cream. NOTE: Don't pour this one as hard as I did!

S: Caramel, toffee, nutty, and a very healthy smattering of German malts.

T: Same as the smell, only even more intense. I was totally surprised by how malty and non-citrusy this was. Sweet for sure, but in a toffee, honey-like kind of way.

M: There is a double-edged sword on this one: On one hand, it would have been cool to have more prickly carbonation, but that might have taken away from the very nice caramel flavor overall. I'll give it a pass in this department.

O: Very solid, drinkable, and tasty brew. I hope to sample lots more brews by Legend in the near future... maybe I'll even make the short trek up to the brewery soon.

My Legend Pilsner poured with a yellow colour and a good 2-finger head. It maintained a head of about 1 cm throughout due to the good carbonation. The smell is hoppy and fruity: it smells like an IPA. The taste is of hops and orange rind with a slightly bitter fruity aftertaste. Very nice. The only problem is that the bitter aftertaste has a strangeness to it and it builds as you drink more. It isn't good. Still, this beer has a great taste apart from that.

Legend Pilsner, on tap at the Brewpub. Served in a pint glass.

Appearance: A translucent gold, slightly darker than the Lager, with plentiful and steady streams of small carbonation racing upwards towards the remnants of a pale white head. There's very little stick involved with this one - no ring of fuzz, no slight, breezy dusting of snow, and no tendrils or flecks on the sides of the glass.

Aroma: Mild, with agitation showing pale honey malts, spicy hops, and a few fruit overtones.

Taste: A surprising fruit presence, with tons of orange, slight lemon, and a few other tropical fruit notes. A pale malt backbone hints at roast and candied fruit, and a strong spicy, grassy hop presence smacks of traditional pilsner, though an odd chemical-esque note detracts slightly, mingling awkwardly with the spicy bitterness of the hops.

Mouthfeel: Overly carbonated, with a bold, eruptive, assertive mouthfeel in a body that's probably a little too sticky. These in combination mitigate one another somewhat, but when considering them individually, I'm a little unimpressed.

Drinkability: A decidedly average pilsner, though I found it drinkable enough. The 5.8% is probably a little on the high side for a beer of this style, and the flavors a little too heavy, so for what it is, I suppose it's a little less drinkable, and I've had pilsners I like more. But I wouldn't not recommend it.

Served in a Budweiser pokal.

I want a battle unicorn. Anyway, this beer pours a clear semi-pale golden straw topped by two fingers of white foam, which settles to a perpetual single finger. The nose comprises very little, only some light corn syrup and florals. Some very soapy notes also pervade. The taste is characteristically straightforward, with notes of light honey, light corn syrup, floral hops, and a bit o' grass. The body is quite light, with a light carbonation and a crisp finish. Nothing all that exciting here, but definitely easy-going and a pretty decent pils.

A: pours golden staw, with a huge white, two finger head that fell to a half finger layer.
S: tad more malty than i was expecting, light roast malt, earthy grassy hops, but yet balanced

D: easy, almost wish today was a hotter day so it could be even more refreshing

Very nice golden color with a great looking bright white head. Moderate noble hop aroma. Nice, mild hop bitterness upfront with a decent underlying maltiness. The malt is even more evident as the beer warms somewhat. Nicely balanced so it is. Good, solid body for the style-almost over done but I like it somewhat "thick". Overall a nice German pils. Wish there were more lagers out there like this.

Legend beers may taste better at the source, but even at the brewery... eh.

Appearance: Clear golden, carbonated, minimal head

Smell: very light hoppy, some earth tones, faint

Taste: Hops, musty, earthy

Mouthfeel: Sweet up front with a bitter finish

Drinkability: It's pretty drinkable, good as a swilling beer, heavy carbonated feel

A: Deep yellow, almost orange. Big head with tons of lacing.

S: Noble hops and honey.

T: The honeyish malt is unusually prominent at front along with an almost wheat-like flavor. Hops become more assertive at the end, leaving a rather harsh bitter aftertaste. It seems like they struggled a bit with the balance.

M: Pretty heavy for a pils. Very carbonated.

D: Not the worst session lager I've ever had. For you Virginians with a thirst for pilsners who want to drink local, give this a try.

Appearance: bright golden yellow color with a 1" head that falls quickly. Some spotty lace sticks to the glass.

Smell: light floral bitterness and some grassiness is picked up by the nose.

Taste: mild malt profile with some grass, hint of citrus, and a light floral bitterness.

Mouthfeel: light in body. Crisp from start to finish. Aftertaste is relatively clean.

Drinkability: definite session pilsner that you won't tire of.

Poured a well carb'd see thru gold with one-finger head and lace. Had a somewhat awkward smell with minor hops and bread malt. Light-bodied and smooth, the hop bitterness is well-balanced with some sweet malts for a drying sensation that has a little sweet punch to it. Finishes crisp and clean, and although I am not a hupe pils fan this is one good beer for anyone to try.

a: pours a hazy golden-amber with a nice 1 finger cap, good retention

s: aromas of rich pale lager malts and biscuit, cereal grain, carries the same current of diacetyl that I've found in most Legend beers - it's usually pretty inoffensive but could stand to be reduced, spicy herbal hops

m: carbonation on the high end, light-medium body

t: much the same as the aroma, rich lager malts with maybe a handful of toasty vienna and crisp pilsner, mealy biscuit, corn cereal, diacetyl flavors carry from sip to finish, herbal hop flavors with a moderate bitterness, imperfect but quite tasty

d: a nice beer, but a little "busy" for a pilsner, the diacetyl is not entirely out of place for the style, and perhaps I'm oversensitive to the chemical, but at these levels it's really a distraction
