We visit Schmankerl Stube frequently, as it's the closest and best German-style restaurant around. It's become the stock site for our various family events.
Charles Sekula is one fantastic proprietor. I've dubbed him "Doctor of Bavarian Cuisine." He enjoys maintaining an atmosphere which is friendly, yet with great regard for formality and propriety. Don't even consider rowdiness, here-- if for no other reason than respect for the owner and facility. Mr. Sekula has provided an authentic Bavarian-German presence here for many years, both in ambience and in his own personal origin.
Writing this in 2006, expect $15-20 per person for the main entree, which includes some sides. Add about $5 each for salad and/or soup, and more for other items (a fair offering of appetizers to select from).
Some of us love the food, and some of us think it is more bland than they prefer. I guess it's a matter of personal taste and expectations. A few times, some of the meat has been of lesser quality than desired by at least one individual, but overall it's usually good to great quality. Generally, it's top-notch in taste and quality, in my own opinion.
Beer- a good selection of on-tap Hacker-Pschorr and some others. A nice solid wood bar area with stools has a wide selection, but definitely with a very civil ambience.
Outdoor seating is great-- reasonably quiet and tranquil despite its central-Hagerstown location. If you're up to wearing a jacket during dining in off-season, sometimes they'll even open the garten-doors for you.
Parking-- few on-street. Try the library parking lot half a block south, or there are public lots a block down over the hill, despite the exertive climb up to the restaurant.
If you're looking to spend less than on a big dinner, the lunches are great as well, and the beer is flowing for that, too.

Atmosphere is a little dated, but that adds to the charm. Good selection of German beers on tap and bottled. I forgot to count the taps, but I think they had 7 or so- all German of varying styles. The beer styles are served in the appropriate glassware. Food and beet is a bit pricey, but the German beer selection is the best around. I hear from many people, including a friend from Germany, that the food is authentic and great. I have only been in for beer so far. When I went, a large group had rented a room and were having a great time. Outdoor dining area in the back is pretty utilitarian, but a nice addition. I look forward to going back to pair the beer with food.

This is my wife and I's favorite place to eat out when we have a baby-sitter. Being of 100% German descent myself, I love the selection of German cuisine that the chef offers. Not the hugest selection of beers, but all of them quality Germans. All the ladies that wait on you wear traditional German dresses and normally know the seasonals, or another good beer to recommend. The food may seem pricey, but it is actually a very good value when you factor in the taste and how full you are after the meal. They also have a mug club where you get a nice German stein, which entitles you to beer specials. Culture yourself with a visit to this place.

This is one of those places were you probably could throw a dart at the menu and have a good meal. It is authentic feeling inside and they have standard German Beers on tap, seasonal being an oktoberfest when I was there. I had a oktoberfest (hacker pschorr I believe) and a salvator. Both were fresh and tasty. I was hoping for a dunkel on tap.
Probably a great place to go in the summer when the outdoor area is open to enjoy.
Would definitely recommend to a beer fan and even more so to a German beer fan.

Combining the factors of: atmosphere, quality, service, and food places the Schmankerl Stube at the top of fine-dining experiences in Hagerstown, Maryland.
I give those four factors a perfect rating because there is really no way that you could step into this restaurant and not be impressed. The proprietor Charlie Sekula, a native of Bavaria Germany, has gone to every length to make sure that you have a completely authentic Bavarian dining experience.
Onto the beer... Unfortunately, there are only 6 beers on draft (listed in the review below). However they also have the following in bottles: Abbaye des Rocs, Amstel (Light), Becks Bier (Hell), Chimay (Blue), Kristall Weiss Bier / Berliner Weisse, St Pauli (Hell or Dunkel), Spaten Bräu München (Hell), Spaten Optimator (Dark), Weissbier (Dark).
The thing that I possibly respect most about this establishment is that they make no effort whatsoever to appeal to the "but I just want something wateryliteMillerBudCoorslowcarb" attitude. When you are having a cultural dining experience, you should not cop-out with a cheap, low-quality beer, and the Schmakerl Stube makes sure that you will not.
This is, of course, a pricey restaurant, but in the catagory that is most important to us, the value is actually quite good. A litre mug of draft beer is $10. That's almost 3 x 12 ounce beers, and for beer of this quality, that's an excellent value.

Well the best thing about this place to me is the Beer. It is a very upscale German restaurant with a dress code during dinner hours. I have been here serveral times and everytmie the food is excellent if expensive but you would have to go a long way to find comperable cuisine. The wait staff is dressed in all traditional bavarian outfits and the decor to match. The have a beer garden and on a nice fall day there is nothing better than having some beer out there.
Now to the beer. First they do not have a large selection but what they lack in selection they make up for in quality. Of course they serve only german beers, but the beers they serve on tap come directly from the brewery and there is nothing like a:
Hacker Pschorr Lager (Pale)
Hacker Pschorr HefeWeiss Bier
Hacker Pschorr Märzen (Oktoberfest)
Paulaner Salvator (Doppel Bock)
straight from the tap and into a glass which come in 1/2 liters, liters, and 5 liters. The five liter glass in a ceramic mug with two handles and I have finished two (at seperate times) each taken a few hours and many restroom visits. These beers are some much better than there bottled brother. If you are in H-town make sure you stop in and have a drink.
