Scores reflect the review of the Bornem Dubbel with a black label. Review of yellow labeled bottle below. New label, new review. Why not? Right?

Pours a crystal clear though very dark ruby. Nose is slight in character. Smooth hop presence with that typical sweet tone in it's own way. Flavor is excellent really. Slightly nutty edge with a sweet tone. You almost get that cherry kind of edge to it as well. Feel is extremely balanced with the carbonation just being right and hitting your mouth like silk. Drinkability is massively high. I'd go on this all night, and then some.

Is this the same beer I reviewed a month ago?? Totally different in all ways. What the hell is going on? I bought this during a trip to San Francisco, not realizing I had tried it before under a different label design. But no way, no way, is this the same beer I tried a month and a half ago. When I looked at the review and saw the picture of the bottle, I said to myself: "Oh. I remember that one. It was....eh." This one was totally different.

The yellow label review (scored 3.55) Looks murky brown with a large head of course that takes a long time to calm down. On the nose it seemed like very sweet grape skins. The taste has a very slight bitter edge with a mild and somewhat citrus tone. It seems to be a bit lighter than what I would expect from a dubbel as I would expect some more flavor. In the future, I would most likely not go for this one again as I feel there are better examples out there.

330ml bottle 8,0% Abv.
Served chilled in an over sized wine glass.
Best Before: 05/06/2014

Appearance: Wow, even the gentlest of pours manages to produce a massive, glass filling head - I am guessing this one is going to be over carbonated! The head is beige in colour and displays phenomenal (to the point of annoyance) retention and leaves a few big patches of lace as it recedes. The body appears a medium brown in the glass, with a back light revealing a beautiful deep red colour with golden-amber edges.

Smell: Mmmm, this actually smells quite nice - the initial nose offers a surprising hint of chocolate (reminiscent of chocolate pronutro), along side toasted malt, plum and banana. As the beer begins to warm, the fruity characters increase, with raisins, cherries and prunes becoming apparent, as well as a light dusting of clove and pepper.

Taste: The flavour follows the nose quite well, however it somehow seems a little bland. Notes include: Toasted malt, a little chocolate, cherries, plums, a little raisin, banana and a dash of spices. There is absolutely no trace of the 8% noted.

Mouthfeel: As expected, the carbonation is of an extremely high level, but thankfully it is just smooth enough to be passable. The body is light-medium, but seems to come across as a little watery for the Abv.

Overall: Bornem Dubble is not the best example of the style out there, but it is still a solid beer, especially for something available locally. Given the price and the availability, I will probably buy this again.

Bornem Dubbel has a thin, cream-colored, creamy head and a very bubbly, hazy, golden-brown appearance, with some lacing left behind. The aroma is sweet, bready, caramel, and even yeasty. Taste is sweet, syrupy, brown bread, dates, and a touch of hop bitterness. Alcohol is not so present with this 8% beer. Mouthfeel is light to medium, and Bornem Dubbel finishes semi-dry, sweet, and fairly drinkable. Overall, this is a really good beer that grows on one as it is drank down. Get some!

330ml bottle, poured into Leffe chalice. Colour was dark auburn, almost opaque, small tanned head which soon faded, had a small amount of lacing. Aroma was yeast, a hint of cranberry and some liquorice. Tasted cranberry, carrot, berries and yeast. Finish starts bitter and ends up biscuity. Booze well hidden. Well carbonated, slightly thick body, smooth. Overall a beer to accompany a heavy meal.
