Lucky Lager was introduced to beer drinkers in 1934. The name Lucky was selected from a name-search contest. Fully fermented, Lucky Lager uses select ingredients and hops to deliver a remarkably clean, crisp-tasting beer.

Pours a clean pale yellow color with a small white head. In the aroma, well, nothing, wait a faint smell of lager, but really nothing. In the taste, faint lagery tastes, and a dry banana peel. A small bite and alighter bodied mouthfeel, with a small dryness to nothing in the aftertaste. The banana throws me for a loop, but really not that good at all.

This is the worst offender on the beer scene today. The type of beer a guy with missing teeth and a grungy old ballcap pickes up because he's "a goin' fishin' with ma buddies", and he ends up back at your liquor store for another case later that night, all wobbly and smelling of piss. Some people from Victoria still drink it because they claim it's "a Vancouver Island staple", but what they fail to realize is that it's brewed by Labatt's in Edmonton and right across Canada with a slurry of adjuncts that barely resemble beer. Never, ever drink one.

This beer really can only be seriously judged after a 15 pack
lucky doesn't usually like the traditional sipper style judge.
this beer needs to be guzzled by a thirsty soul after a hard days work.
so for the average office worker you might want to shy away, this beer is too much for you.
did you just split 2 chord of wood?
here is your opportunity to end the day perfectly.
as you turn another one upside down for a job well done.
heres to you and your lucky.

473 mL single can from TBS; listed at 4.8% abv. Easily one of the most popular 'value' brands out west, although its following here in Ontario seems to be a little more limited in scope (I haven't seen anyone drink it since college, and that was mostly because of the one guy in residence interning at Labatt). Clearly I must have been feeling lucky to bother picking this up at all, because I've tried this enough times to know what to expect.
Pours a familiar straw-yellow colour, bright and translucent, topped with nearly two fingers of fizzy, frothy, bleach-white head. Retention is ok for an adjunct lager - it sticks around for a few minutes, there is some lacing left behind, and the smooth, even cap on the surface is even somewhat attractive. Perhaps I was wrong about this stuff? Nope; the aroma pops my thought bubble and brings me back into reality - it is highly vegetal, with grainy pale malts, corny sweetness, and musty straw that has been sitting in the barn for too long. At least the odour is fairly muted.
The taste is bland, with way too much cereal adjunct sweetness to be balanced, refreshing, or anything more than tolerable. Cooked veggies, green apple skin and pale malts form the bulk of the flavour, with some weedy hop dryness scrubbing it away toward the finish. Kind of metallic in the aftertaste. Light-bodied, watery, and heavily carbonated - this one tallboy will be fine but if I drank this all night I'd be quite bloated. Easy to toss back I guess, if you make it a point to swallow quickly and not taste it. Mildly offensive, but served ice cold and consumed quickly, I can see the appeal (or, at the very least, how it can be tolerated in large quantities).
I worked at a couple of liquor stores in Edmonton a few years ago - both in crummier areas of town, and one thing they had in common was that 15 packs of this were always the store's best seller. Kind of sad, but speaking frankly, this is still a few pegs above the bottom of the barrel - as bad as this sounds, you could do worse, but you'd probably have to venture into malt liquor/ice beer territory.
Final Grade: 2.35, a forgettable D+. As far as value brands go, I'd probably recommend just sticking with Lakeport/Laker (out east) or Brewhouse (out west), all of which are marginally-to-considerably better than Lucky Lager. Something to avoid unless you can't afford anything better (or you're just a ticker), and not the optimal choice in its price bracket.
