Reviewed on 4/3/2010. On tap at the brewpub. Pours a cloudy dark orange with a small white head. Aroma of sweet malt and butter. Flavor is super sweet with some butter and toffee notes. Rather sugary and much too sweet, also juice-like. A rare non-winner IPA from Willimantic.

So I'm at the pub yesterday (11MAR10) and done with 2 rounds of bier, lunch, and the latest Yankee Brew News. Too early to head back to Mohegan to pick-up my Mother and Daughter. So, out comes the book Band of Brothers (they've just dropped into Normandy) and over comes my next bier - Double Trouble DIPA. Currahee!!

Had two 12oz glasses of this offering while Easy Company did their thing. The bier was quite dark for a DIPA, a clear, rich, medium copper bier. The head was creamy and fine, light tan, and slowly ebbing into a rim-job. Lacing was A-1 all the way. Malty toffee-caramel aspects are part of the aroma, along with some surprisingly mild levels of hops. Interesting... Hitting the palate, this one was more than medium, almost chewy, and silky smooth start to finish.

As with the nose, malty caramel and toffee notes are right up front. There's a nice sweetness present, and a suggestion of vanilla got me reminded a tad, oddly, of Smuttynose Wheat Wine. Hops are there but in nowhere near the abundance I expected. Regardless, they ARE there and satisfy your lupulin craving without being in your face. Even more oddly, as this bier warmed I got more of the hops coming out. Usually the malts come forth more in warmer climes. Besides Smutty, I also got flashbacks from this bier of Harpoon Triticus. Yes, a very interesting bier, and one I enjoyed very much. Alas, the time to be responsible and drive had come too soon. Zum Wohl!!

On tap at Willimantic on 3/3/10.

A - Hazy, almost cloudy unfiltered appearance with rusty orange and copper hues and a slim, creamy off-white head that reduced to a thin veil and a splash of lace.

S - Opens with a very unique hop character suggesting Mandarin oranges and vinous grape-like attributes. There is also a subtle hint of catbox. Aroma is sweet, although not necessarily malty with traces of caramel and toffee. A waft of alcohol also emerged as the liquid warmed up.

T - Like the aroma, the flavor combines a vinous quality with a juicy Mandarin orange character. Malt is primarily sweet with toffee and caramel notes. Finishes with a dry moderate hop bite.

M - Medium bodied with a syrupy texture and light carbonation resulting in only a hint of prickle on the tongue. Bitterness lingers for a bit on the palate, although this is not overly hoppy for a DIPA.

D - While this doesn't scream DIPA due to its sweet character, the hop profile is pretty interesting and complex. Not bad, although I did speak to the brewer and he wasn't too enthusiastic with the results of his labors on this one. I preferred the Glacier IPA over this one.
