Draught @ Brewpub: This one pours a hazy orangish amber color. There was a thin white head that left some lacing. Nose is a bit lighter than expected. Spice, pine and some citrus. The taste is good. It has a subdued sweetness. The bitterness is also subdued. Lots of hop flavors, but nothing stands out above the rest. Some spices and malts.

Had on tap at Willi last night and was not impressed at all.

The nose was pretty good, spicy, piney, with a good amount of citrus balance. Warm with a kick of alcohol, but with a bit of sweetness from a good amount of malt.

Taste was totally off for me. I liked some of the German style malt flavour, but it was just too much. Surprisingly it's hard for me to describe exactly what was wrong with this one, but it was boozy and dry, maybe even astringent, or something. I had a couple small sips and couldn't bring myself to drink anymore -- and that's an extreme rarity for me.

Two other people at my table ordered it and thought it was okay, but sadly for me this would have been one of my first drain pours. To my credibility, even they were surprised I'd found something I couldn't enjoy (as I'll even enjoy a macro lager occasion).

Willimantic Dyvyl Hopyard IPA

Had this on tap (12 oz.) at the Willibrew today. It is an unfiltered Double IPA brewed with 5 malts, including Pilsner and Biscuit malts, then hopped with Magnum, Marynka, and spices fermented with their French Saison yeast.

This website states it is 8.4% abv but Willibrew's menu (on 6/24/12) has it at 9.6% abv so who knows? I belive the previous version of the brew was at 8.4% but this brew has been unretired and is now at 9.6%.

It pours an amber color with a thin white head. The IBU's don't seem too high on this offering. Very drinkable with a slightly above average mouth feel. I wouldn't call the body thin but it is not much thicker than average.

I like most offerings buy Willibrew and this brew was one I would have again.

A - this DIPA is a thickly hazed dark amber color, with a thin wispy white head on top

S - piney and citrine hops dominate as one would expect, the amount of balance that a residual sweetness imparts, however, is unexpected, and welcome

T - the sweetness really comes to full force on the palate, the hop profile exhibits the same notes as in the aroma, the pine and citrine elements, the sweetness is big and reminiscient of candied sugar and some distinct ginger

M&D - lively and flavorful on the tongue, not incredibly complex but rich and powerful flavors, if anyone knows how to make an IPA/DIPA its Willibrew

On draft at the brewpub, served in a 12 oz soda glass. Pours a hazy dark yellow with a whispy white head. Smells of flowery hops and a bit of spice. Huge blast of hops on the first sip, followed by a mellowing sweetness. Little bit of spice from the saison yeast. This is a belgian IPA! Very drinkable despite the 8.5% abv.

This beauty from the highly respected Willimantic Brewing folks shines a bright clear amber color with a big off white yellowish head and lots of carpeting lacing on the sides of the glass. The aroma is a sort of peaty pine hop, even a touch herbal, sort of an ocean mist effect. Interesting and kind of yummy. The first taste brings a very thick, full bodied avalanche of chunky wine-like pine. Alcohol is evident in the flavor but it does not interfere with the flavor here. I get some currant sweetness married with a bold buttery malt. This is a very drinkable DIPA despite the alcohol level. Very impressive, somewhat complex, great body with lots of flavor. Willibrew forever!

Growler received in an in person trade with richdude. Thanks for the opportunity!

Appearance: Iced tea brown with orange folds. A small off white crown rapidly dissipates and leaves little lace.

Smell: A touch of malt sweetness along with a healthy dose of juicy hops....almost smells fresh hopped.

Taste: Initial hop bitterness that opens up into a slightly fruity and slightly buttery malt profile. Finishes slightly bitter and slightly dry.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied and a touch slick but I think this growler has lost some carbonation since it was poured (5 days ago). Growler says "best consumed within 24 hours of pouring" on it and I think they might be right.

Drinkability: No alcohol presence which is cool considering the abv. More carbonation and a better flavor profile would make it more drinkable though.

Nothing special but not bad.

Between pouring at Brass City and multiple times at the bar...

This is the second year this Belgian style IPA has been brewed, and I really enjoyed this years more than last.

It is the aroma that really gets me on this, I will sit there for a few minutes just inhaling it before even taking that first sip. There is a spicy, fruit, and pepper aspect to this that shows its belgian side, while the hops adding that American citrus flare. The taste follows suit pretty well with what the aroma promises. A sweet biscuit malt coupled with the mildly spiced flavors of the yeast and the bitter finish of the hops. And to top it off, it goes down much smoother than the last batch.

The flavors have mellowed a bit since it was first tapped this time around, evening out into a wonderful full flavored and drinkable belgian ipa. Get some while it lasts or wait until next year.

Thanks to Naproxen for the hookup! Shared with the fine folks at Bruisin Ales at the post BrewGrass gathering.

A-Bright, clear copper with a medium off-white head that reduced to a thin cap and left spotty lace.

S-Sweet biscuit malt and Belgian yeast spiciness with a nice zip of citrus hops.

T-Well balanced citrus hop bite along with a pop from the spicy yeast and sweet biscuit malt. This is very nicely put together.

M-Medium-light bodied with a slight stickiness and a nice lingering hop/yeast bitterness.

D-Well done and well received by all of the folks that tasted it. I didnt find it particularly different or "big" but the sum of the parts made for a nice drinking brew.

Picked up a growler to go after having dinner here. I poured this into a snifter glass. Pours a golden amber color with thick foamy head. Lots of lacing on the side of the glass. It's got a real nice aroma. The aroma is hoppy, malty and somewhat fruity, though I can't quite place the fruit. The taste is nice and hoppy, and the sweet malt compliments the hops nicely. It's got a good bitterness to it as well. Mouthfeel is full bodied and smooth, and leaves some stick in the mouth. It drinks rather easy. I enjoyed this and would drink it again. As a side note, the growler cost me $29 with the jug.

Straw yellow with a big frothy white head. Low aroma of bready yeast and clove. Full and rich mouthfeel with a thick and creamy body. Flavors of doughey yeast, clove, banana, and low floral hops. The hops are a great addition to the flavor and meld nicely with the typical Belgian flavors, but I would prefer just a bit more hops and a bit less yeast funk.
