Turbid amber with blonde highlights when backlit and a creamy tan head that leaves fine lace on the glass. Light toasted caramel, citrus notes and herbal hops in the aroma. Mild malty sweetness and a nice bit of caramel no doubt from the addition of hot stones in this beer. Medium light bodied with mild carbonation. With no other Steinbier to compare this to I can only say that this is a nice beer.

Flip-top half-litre bottle from Stirchley Wines & Spirits: best before 19 Jan 2012, poured into an Abbot Ale glass tankard @ home on 22 Nov 2012.
Cloudy, dull amber/old gold body with a good foaming head.
Mixed bag of smells came from the brew: toasted malts, yeastiness and mustiness, no hot stone bits I could find.
The taste was also a mixed bag: caramel and toffee flavours give it a sweet edge while a crisp hop bitterness calms down the sweetness nicely.
I didn't know what to expect from a beer that has a really hot stone dropped into it: but you can't tell the process has taken place to be honest. Nothing wrong with it, just not out of the ordinary like I hoped for.

Leikeim Original Steinbier
LOOK: Clear deep golden colored brew, with a lathery froth.
SMELL: Fresh baked herb bread, toffee, grass, clean lager yeast. Smoke, caramel and a little bit of fruit.
TASTE: Clean lightly toasted malts and a gentle herbal hopping with a mild tea like bitterness. Soft buttery toffee. Simple but with nice round flavors of toast and noble hop bitters. Even a touch of lemony citrus to go with the caramelized malt flavor.
FEEL: Medium bodied, ultra smooth, clean delicious lager with some body behind it. Drinks effortlessly and a solid choice to enjoy multiples of.
OVERALL: A fine lager here from the Leikeim brewery . Solid German brew direct from the source. I'd love to pair this with beer simmered sausage and kraut.

Glass: Ayinger willi glass
While I'm not sure what the difference between a steinbier and a kellerbier is (both seem to be unfiltered lagers, perhaps with different malt bills), there are significant differences between Leikeim's keller and stein biers. The most obvious is a stronger presence of fruit esters in the steinbier, whereas the kellerbier had more focus on toasted bread. Whatever the ingredient differences, the steinbier is an equally enjoyable bier, relative to the kellerbier, just expect more fruit esters from the steinbier.
Pours a 2cm head of off-white, small to medium-sized bubbles. The foam has above-average retention, eventually receding to a thin ring around the glass. Lacing along the sides of the glass is minimal, though present, a few dots and lines. Body is a pale brown color and opaque when out of the light, light brings out a reddish-orange center with yellow highlights to the beer, still opaque from suspended yeast. Carbonation is visible, but sluggish.
Aroma is surprisingly fruity, with detectable amounts of subdued pineapple and coconut atop a bready malt base with some European hop bitterness as well. While I miss the strong yeastiness of the kellerbier, this is also intriguing and enjoyable.
Tasting opens with malt sweetness, some pineapple and coconut, and slight toffee. Mid-palate develops the malt sweetness to a bready, yeasty conglomeration, mixes in some bittering European hops, and continues with the slight pineapple, coconut, and toffee. Back of palate finds continued pineapple and coconut, with subdued maltiness and increased hop bitterness. Aftertaste is of coconut with some lingering hop bitterness.
The beer is medium-bodied, with medium-low carbonation, that results in a super-smooth and semi-bubbly mouthfeel, which is just a pleasure to drink. Finishes semi-dry, with modest stickiness across the palate.

I'm going onto my second Leikeim, and I hope it's better than the first. On to the beer:
Brownish orange colored, unfiltered, and frothy looking foam sitting on top of this beer. Lace is good, and so is the head's retention. The nose sets off a red flag. It's very grainy smelling. There's a note of caramel that brings a little sweetness to it.
The sell-by date is four months away, yet this tastes like a beer that's four months past the sell-by date instead. Whatever malty sweetness is there has a stale edge to it. It's also astringent. A touch of apple hints. Perhaps needless to say, it's not a smooth ride. Well, the taste isn't annyway. The mouthfeel goes unharmed, providing a light and reasonably crisp feel to an otherwise dissapointing beer.
Dear Leikeim, please double check the assurance of your sell-by dates. That's two I've had from you that were consumed well before the date, and two that tasted like they were already old. This is another no-go.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a brownish color and a hazy texture. There was an inch of foamy head that disappeared fairly quickly. Average lacing.
S: As expected, this beer had a strong malty aroma, with a slight caramel tinge as well.
T: Tasted of malt (a large amount), a little caramel, and a little hops in the finish. Not a terribly complex beer, but vibrant and very focused.
M: A good amount of carbonation with a smooth, crisp finish. Medium-bodied.
O: A solid, sturdy well made beer. Drinkable.

Old school. A hot rock is dumped into an unfiltered lager to add additional caramelization.
Cloudy amber/khaki. Lots of foam.
A flavor profile of caramel, peanut butter, and bread. Yup, not kidding about the peanut butter. I get that from other brews, too. I believe it to be a mix of darker malts (usually dunkels) and noble hops, but it isn't uncommon for me.
Tasty stuff, and easy drinking, too.
Caramelized and hearty, but not too boozy.
Great beer I hope to try at the source someday.
Simple, straight ahead, but really good. Not every really good beet has to have a million flavors going on. Give me 2-3 really good ones and I'm happy.

A- Hazy and slighlty murky orange. Two finger creamy head, does not look very dense but still holds good retention, as well as leaving nice amounts of lacing on the glass
S- Sweet bready and caramel malts among a faint smoked feel. A background hint of grassy freshness
T- Strong and dominant caramel malts as to be expected, but with some background grainy and slightly smoked malt notes to bring a bit of complexity and a rustic feel. Light hints of fresh herbs and citrus bringing a refreshing feel. A touch of earthyness in the aftertaste. Overall very much on the sweet side, really peculiar and quite difficult to describe
M- Not impressed. Watery in body and actually quite low on the carbonation side as well. Still feels quite nice on the tongue, with a juicy smoothness. Not so nice on the palate, where it feels really flat
O- Very good drinkabilty despite it's peculiar character. A very interesting beer and i'm glad i tried it. Maybe a bit too much on the sweet side, not really feeling the urge to have it again

"Leikeim Original Steinbier" on the front label, back export label with a close-up photo of flaming stones, and a best by date of 10 11 12. Imported by Doyna, Ltd.
It pours a hazy, unfiltered orange tone, much like a hefeweizen. Dense tan foam fluffs up above the rim of the glass, and leaves rings of lacing as it settles.
Bready specialty malt aroma, slight caramel and peanut butter.
Similar flavors of caramelized malts, bready and smooth, not all that sweet really. Lingering multigrain bread notes, smooth creamy feel and medium bodied. Pretty easy to drink, would be nice if there was some smoke to it though, if it is in fact a Steinbier.

Picked up a swing-top bottle from Euro Market for $3.50. Best by 10/2012. Poured a hazy amber with a short white head. There's a mild yeast bread aroma. The flavor has more caramel malt than most keller beers. I'm not picking up any hops character, but there's maybe a touch of earthyness from the yeast. I'd expect more character from a kellerbier. This is too bland.

Not a Kellerbier, not a Rauchbier... this is an authentic Steinbier, brewed with super-hot stones as heating agents for the boil, inserted directly into the wort. Voll toll!
.5L, best before 10/10/11.
Pours a cloudy medium amber. Small head dissipates fast, bit of lacing.
The nose is great, with notes of smoke and woody hops. Very interesting.
The flavor is somewhat malty, with burnt caramel notes (but not sweet). Woody, smoky flavors as well. This beer is surprisingly dry overall, with a very swift finish that's unfortunately pretty metallic. I'm not in love with the dry, hard mouthfeel on this beer. The carbonation is thin, but harsh, and there's a cottonmouth effect on the tongue. Not ideal.
I really appreciate the painstaking process undertaken to brew this beer, but in terms of flavor, the results aren't that spectacular.

In my time here in Germany, Keller bier/Zwickel have proved to be my favorite. The rustic unfiltered character remind me of Saison, so picked up several examples today in my last week here. This beer was created with "stone and fire", very rustic sounding.
Poured from my flip top, beautiful apple juice murky tone, head is perfect. Medium thick, creamy, foamy, light brown. Brew looks like apple juice, mixed with a Maisel Weisse. Orange-tangerine highlights, almost looks like an IPA. Rustic, old world. Perfect for a Zwickel.
Smell already is amazing. Wood, malt, sour fruit, candied sugar, mineral, like gravel, a hoppiness I have not come across in a German beer so far. Pineapple, mango, I swear this smells very much like a Stone IPA. I am blown away by the rustic spiciness of this brew. Deeper into it-black pepper, clove, orange, This is some good stuff. I never would have guessed from the hop levels this was a German brew.
Flavor-Why have I only found this brew today!? Rustic-spicy, malty, sweet, oak, tobacco, but a citric hop profile that seems to transport this brew to another dimension. Starts with a bitter mineral bite, midway sweet malt, bread, smoke, molasses, sour fruit, fig, dried plum, finishing with pineapple, black pepper, spicy clove, and HOPS!! Wow. what a great Keller bier
---This is what I would imagine for the German Brewer as a kellerbier, rustic, yet somehoe new-age hoppy and fruity-spicy. It's as if the brewer brewed it, and kept it to himself because it turned out so different from tradition, but too damn good to share. Fitting in with a style that was the "brewers reserve"--the beautiful bready rusticality mixed with the modern hoppy touch is too good to be true. Easily one of the best Zwickel beers I've had, and I've drank Zwickel in farmhouses in Bavaria.Wow, all I can say..

Beer from Germany. 'Made by means of fire and stone', as stated on the bottle. 0.5 l bottle.
Orange brown colour, big creamy head, but modest carbonation on this.
Smell is malty and yeasty. Also some citrus, earthy aroma (maybe because of the stones used during the process of brewing this).
Taste is particular strong hoppy, spicy (peppery). Some citric notes in the background. Defenately not sweet.
Nice balance between bitterness and maltyness.
It's a smooth brew. Flavourfull.

Light amber color, with something floating in it. A good and compact beige head, very beautiful.
A light burnt malt in the smell, a "cooked" flavour.
The stone effect is strong in the taste, too, with a not invading caramel, and a light smokiness. A bit difficult to explain, you have to try it.
Malt and caramel in the aftertaste, again, but, again, with this raw and "cooked" effect.
Hard to find style, but very interesting.

Poured from a .5L swing top to a bier glass, the liquid is dark orange with good carbonation. The head is tall white and leaves some lace.
The smell is grainy malt topped with citrus and a hint of nuts.
The taste is better, a chewy thick doughy malt with lots of citrus and nuts. Really quite the beer that begs you to gulp.
The mouthfeel is nice a very good carbonation and better then medium body.
The drinkability is excellent could be the best of style for me. Prosit, MK

A fliptop 500 mL bottle with an orange beer with a small head.
Smell is a little toffee and a little smoky, with some bready notes.
Taste is light bready and biscuity with grains and a hint of smoke. Bitterness is low at first, but when swallowed the beer leaves a slight bitter at the back of my tongue. The yeast is clean and only adds a mineralic twist. A solid brew.

Murky apricot colored beer supports a tall, dense, cream colored head that fades slowly leaving some thick patches of lace. Faint aroma of fleshy fruits, vanilla, fresh grain and vanilla. Flavors of peaches, dough, and vanilla. A mild nutty flavor pops in towards the finish just as a burst of carbonation washes away the other flavors. Moderately light body is bursting with fine carbonation. It's definitely an interesting mix of flavors. It's the first steinbier I've had so I don't know if it's representative of the style, but it's interesting enough to try one or two.
It says something about the tradition of Frankischen Kellerbiere on the back so that's the style I went with.
