May 2011: Shared 500 ml bottle, at Plan B, Copenhagen, 26.05.11. BB date was 28.04.11. ABV was 8.5%. Deep golden colour, slightly hazy, moderate white head. Moderate aroma, hints of caramel and honey. The medium sweet flavour has also notes of caramel and honey, with distinct hops and alcohol in the finish.

Samples out of a bottle while in Bamberg but since I’m a mile from the brewery, I’ll see if it’s on tap. As for the bottle, beautiful artwork to the rear. This is a 8.5 ABV dobblebock that lacks a pinch. Surprisingly light initial mouthfeel that becomes heavy and explodes with strong mollasses and a hint of burnt dark chocolate. Smooth finish with a malty tingling tongue sensation. Cognac like appearance. Definitely not a session but great for a chilly day. Recommended.

2017 Update. Enjoyable beer. Decent example of the style. Moderate head initially, that lasts a while. You notice the alcohol, but it is still an enjoyable malty beer. Difficult to find, even in Bamberg, except of course at the Brewery while it is available. As it says, the strongest Bier in Bamberg! Drinkably dangerous!
2018 Update: Yum!
2019 Update: Included in the Franken Bock Bier Advent Calendar!
2020 Update: It remains a dangerously drinkable bier!

500ml bottle, best before april 2013

A- Dark coppery colour, still perfectly transparent. Off-white head, about two fingers, decent retention at first, not so much on a second pour, scarse lacing

S- Grainy and caramel base on the background, with a dominant smoked character upfront. Nice, not very powerful or complex

T- Bready on the base of things, flavourwise it never gets too much in the way but it gives that typical doppelbock density. The main role is played by a nice and perfectly balanced mix of caramel and smoked notes, which gives this beer a pretty unique feel. Not so much complexity as i couldn't detect any chocolate or fruity notes that you may expect in a doppelbock. Also no esters, alcohol is well hidden. Slight touch of hop bitterness in the finish

M- Medium to full body, typical dense feel of a doppelbock. Smooth and creamy on the palate, just the slightest carbonation touch on the tongue

O- Not your usual doppelbock for sure, but i can't say i enjoyed it that much. It's peculiar, worth a try, but actually not so complex and it's gets boring after a while. Plus, it's not as warming as you may expect from the style and smoked notes get a little too dominant after a while, which is sure a flaw as i had some rauchbiers which did not feel 'too smoky', while this one did

Half litre bottle, copper colour, minimal head, hazy. Slight musty aroma with hints of hops but mainly drowned out by the booze. Tasted charcol and roasted malts but again the booze was what dominated. Not smooth but not fizzy. Ok to have tried but I won't seek out again. PS mine had 8.5abv and a different label to the one shown here.

I bought this bottle with others at the Bier Koning in Amsterdam back in May '11.

A - The appearance has caramel, and malt colors witha slight foam that dissaptes after a short while. the beer is nice and clear with no cloudiness.

S - Definite malts, caramel, and a richness in the smell.

T - The taste is awesome. Very smooth with malts and a touch of hop bitter at the end of the taste without alot of carbonation which is nice.

M - A nice full feel that makes one to have another taste.

O - Awesome beer! I can't wait to get back to Amsterdam or Germany so I can have more of the Bambergator and maybe fit some in for home.

Pours very deep golden to light coppery body, with lasting short, slightly off-white head of agglomerated bubbles.
Nose is sweet and malty with Pils and some melanoidin-malt (Vienna or Munich) with pronounced toasty qualities, and a tinge of alcohol. I get some cooked vegetable notes that might originate from the Pils malt.
Sweet flavor with Pils and Vienna/Munich malt with toasty qualities exhibits evident hop-bitterness - the later is expected from a lighter version of Doppelbock, as is the complete absence of chocolate and fruity qualities typical of the darker representatives of the style. Body is medium with low carbonation.

A solid and unique doppelbock that I'm glad to have picked up.

Not too sweet or slick, despite the 8.5%ab listed on the bottle.

Strong zesty herbal hoppiness with a solid bitterness, notes of caramel, grains, and a hint of alcohol. Doesn't have the typical dopebock notes of ripe fruits and cloying sweetness; which makes it unique and a nice change of pace.

The finish is long with a distinct rye note that seems to last forever. Overall; solid and simple, with distinct character. Definitely worth picking up.

Brown half litre bottle, best before 2nd Jun 09. Poured into half litre 'Berliner Kindl' glass and drank in Jan 09. My bottle claimed 8.5% ABV by the way.

This review was done while eating brown bread and a Smoked German Salami salad.

Because of this breweries history (I have visited twice) I assumed this would be a real smokey special with loads of hidden strenght. That was not the case, there was more smokiness in my salami then in the beer!

The beer poured a clear dark amber with very little head, even after a vigorous pour.

No aroma worth mentioning when the beer is first poured and cold. As it warms a Peaty (like some Whiskies) aroma does appear, a warming open fire sort of thing. It is however, too little, too late.

The alcohol is evident in the mouthfeel and taste. A little smokiness arrives in the aftertaste and a slight warming of the throat followed each mouthful (it isn't a sipping beer).

I feel this is a half and half compromise between a Rauch and Doppelbock, with the Doppelbock coming out on top, but only just.

Having said that, I enjoyed the beer, I just wish I could have scored it higher in some of the other review areas.

A clear, dark brown red beer with a thin head.

Smell is malty with dark notes of dates and raisins. No real dark malt notes, only some candisugar.

Taste is very malty with sweet munich malt notes. There is also the dates and raisins, garnished with a syrupy sweet candisugar maltiness. This beer is all about malt and hops are on the sideline to support. There is a rather strange smoky taste to this beer that is also a bit like burned rubber. This is luckily a rather subdued taste, but is starting to get to me at the end of the bottle.

0.5l brown bottle. Pours a rich amber colored beer, cascading for a moment, then settling to a 1-finger think white foam crown.

Gentle aroma of grain, with mineral notes, dried hay, and light spicy esters.

Firm and even malty body with toasted malts, a smooth sugary sweetness, and a touch of bread crusts. Some fruity grape esters. Alcohol is quite pronounced and aggressive, a bit boozy too, like cheap vodka, and its spiciness melds well with herbal and spicy noble hops characters. Hops seem a bit resiny, sticky, and linger about for a while. Hints of floral mixed in with the sweetness. Grain tannins in the semi-drying finish.

A very different Doppelbock for these tastebuds. Lots of hop character and alcohol presence. Todd likes.

Thanks, Jimbo.

A big thanks to UncleJimbo for the sample.

Presentation: .5 L brown bottle with a freshness date stamped on the front label.

Appearance: Creamy tiny bubbled lace with a semi-clear copper hue.

Smell: Mildly earthy with a perfume-like grassy grain and light yeast aroma.

Taste & Mouth Feel: Smooth and slick with a medium body, toasted biscuits and nutty yeast come to mind. Slight resiny hop with an aftershock of alcoholic esters … mild at that. Fresh malt flavor throughout.

Drinkability & Notes: An odd blend of hops and malt IMO, balanced but eclectic in complexity. Great stuff, very fresh and flavorful.
