(12 oz. bottle into mug) Poured a rich black color with a creamy tan head that left little to no lacing on the glass. Nose was heavy with a toasted chocolate and caramel, with a hint of coffee. Drink was surprisingly smooth, and unlike other schwarzbiers I have tried, the roast was not overpowering, but well proportioned with the other flavors. As the glass warmed a little, this smoky flavor faded, and the chocolate malt took the fore. A very very refreshing drink after my meal. The perfect pick me up on a snowy day!

Got this one in a BotM shipment.
Poured into a shaker: a near black brown, 2 fingers dropping to half-a-finger of creamy tan head. Stout-like in appearance, with a wall of lacing.
Smells of roasty-toasty biscuit, sweet caramelized malt, creamy coffee but all with a moderate intensity, not real rich. Nutty & kind of peppery, slight sour milk. Popping popcorn?
Taste of bitter chocolate, coffee-like roast grains. Then there's a good hop bite, enough to end very crisp after those heavier flavors. Dark bread crust. Very full-flavored for a nearly session-strength brew. Mild roast & sugar in aftertaste.
Mouthfeel is a nice combo of prickly bite & creamy foam, medium body. I have a feeling I'm going to buck the overall trend in the ratings -- I was pretty impressed by this low-ish ABV lager, flavorful without weighing too heavilyon the palate. I would've mistake this for a porter if I didn't know better.

Poured a nice dark brown with a light creamy tan had lingering and leaving some light lacing.
The smell had a nice bit of light smoke and a touch of sweet cereal.
The flavor follows the smell perfectly the light smokeyness coming through up front with a long creamy sweetness in the finish.
The mouthfeel is very creamy with a long slightly dry finish.
Very drinkable and top notch Swarz.

Served from a 12 oz bottle, poured into a stein.
A: Black with an OK head, minimal lacing. Gives the impression of a strong, stark beer.
S: Slightly malty, very apparent chocolate.
T: Malts and chocolate are the most apparent with just enough sweetness to give it a Chocolate Malt Ball quality. Pleasant as an after dinner beer.
M: Good mouthfeel, carbonation is fairly light, but not "flat" and with a low alcohol content it is not obtrusive.
D: Great drinkability, the drink lends itself to being a good "after dinner" beer, although it definitely lends itself to all occasions.

A-color is pitch black. head is slightly tan but not very big.
S-first sniff is fantastic! cream, roasted coffee, toffee, dark chocolate, cherries?, nutty. and if you take a step back and just try to appreciate the combination of that all, it's very nice.
T-doesn't quite live up to the aroma, but still delicious. the toffee, chocolate, and cream stand out the most.
M-a little thinner than i expected/hoped for, but good.
very tasty. i could have a couple of these back to back. this one went down quickly

Slight malty aroma. Dark brown brew with a short quickly disappearing head.
Flavor is nice. Fairly sweet. Tiny bit of chocolate, some slight sour tang, some roasted notes. Just a little bit of bitter hops. Lingering aftertaste. Maybe a little bit too sweet for my taste.
Good mouthfeel with just the right amount of mouthfeel. And very drinkable. This one disappeared fast.

Had on tap at McNellie's in Tulsa. Dark in the pint with a small off white head ring around the top of the glass.
Smells of roasted malt and chocolate.
Great full flavor here, yet very light and easy to drink. Chocolate, coffee beans, roast malt and bread crust.
I was very impressed by this one. Had the big flavor of a robust porter with a light body that was very drinkable. Could've sessioned these all night.

Surprisingly good beer here. Highly underrated on here. Beer is black / dark brown, hazy, thin off white head, small bubbles, some lacing, moderate to low carbonation.
The aroma is sweet, good yeast profile too. I like this.
Beer is medium in body and quite sweet but not in a cloying way, it is almost boozy but the finish is excellent. I would recommend this beer as a sweeter interpretation of the schwartzbier category to anyone interested in dark lagers.

Great. First beer I ever tried from Krebs, but sets a high standard. Looks nice, smells great, tastes better. I think the average reviews for this are too low.
Dark malty goodness that tastes sort of chocolaty and doesn't lose it's flavor as your glass slowly warms. Not too complex or trying to mix too many flavors in there. The stout-like flavors aren't too strong and let it still taste like a beer and not like a chocolate bar or a cup of coffee. Just a simple, smooth, easy to drink beer.
Buy this beer. For sure.

A - Poured dark with a tan head that's easy to create. Foam retention is good with light lacing.
S - Overwhelming roasted and chocolate aroma. Smells very sweet.
T - Slightly bitter finish with a lingering aftertaste of roasted malt. Again, Sweet.
M - Medium to full body with a medium carbonation. Smooth.
D - Would purchase again. This beer has first-sip likeability if you're in the mood for sweet. Very easy to drink and a good transition beer to the darker side.

Courtesy of wolfman17. 12 oz. stubby bottle poured into my Brooklyn tulip tumbler. The bottle has interesting info about the beer and the brewer. A one finger light tan head rises up and gently fades to a light covering. Streaks of lace on my glass. Tiny columns of bubbles gently rise up.
Smells are of roasted malt, hint of dark fruit like figs. Sugar,a trace of caramel, and faint chocolate notes underneath. A light citrus and hop floral component as well. Pepper in the back of my nose.
Taste is roasted malt and a pleasing sourness with sweet burnt caramel in the middle. A mild phenolic in the finish along with a firm hop bitterness that brings back the roasty malt on my tongue. A yeasty bready aspect slips in and out. Quite delicious.
Mouthfeel is a light medium and gently creamy. Carbonation is spot on for a "black lager" and very refreshing.
Drinkability is excellent and makes this one a perfect session beer when your tastes run darker and roasty. MMM roasty

Pours just like I like it, dark and cloudy. Looks like dark cola, with no head.
Good smell...chocolate dominates with notes of licorice in the background.
Chocolate and coffee, both bittersweet, flood the tastebuds.
Initially sweet, then slightly bitter, the feel in the mouth is complex with the differing sensations, before giving way to a smooth finish.
A nice beer that goes down smooth begging you for another taste.

Thanks to coldmeat23 for hooking it up.
Poured into a pint glass.
A: Pours a DEEP brown with dark ruby highlights around the edges. About a half finger of foam fades quickly leaving almost nothing on top and no lacing. Kinda looks like a Coke or Root Beer.
S: All I can smell is chocolate. Wow.
T: Big chocolate up front, followed by lots of roasted barley and a little bit of earthy hops.
M: Very chewy for a low abv beer. Also quite smooth considering the relatively high carbonation. Cleanses the palate nicely while leaving a just right feel on the tongue.
D: A very nice, mildly sessionable beer. Would go great with certain food/dessert pairings. One of the more enjoyable lagers I've had. Mmm

A - Pours black while slightly turning very dark brown towards the top. Thin head that leaves a few wisps of off white bubbles. No lacing.
S - Chocolaty malt, sugary granola/, toasted syrupy malt.
T - Tangy cocoa bitterness, heavy roasted malt, smoky grain that has a a bit of a sour characteristic. Some light sweetness blends through before a roasted/slightly burnt coffee grows toward a nice and dry finish. Aftertaste is a blend of chocolate and coffee.
M - Just right for the style.
This is a smoky/toasty beer. It's chocolate and coffee flavors are pronounced but not too bold. Goes down very smooth. Highly sessionable. I will definitely be picking up more of this brew.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass.
Appearance: It appears black until it's held up to a light and shows it's red color. A light tan head starts out nearly two fingers and doesn't fade until the bottom half of the glass, leaving a moderate lacing.
Smell: Overwhelmingly malty, almost like a vanilla milkshake.
Taste: The malt is still predominate, a little sweet with some bitter chocolaty roasted flavors as you swallow.
Mouth feel: I wouldn't call it thin by any means, but it doesn't quite live up to the heft of the flavor.
This is only my second schwarzbier, so I can't speak for how well it represents the style, but I enjoyed it. I couldn't see drinking too many of these in a sitting but two or three aren't out of the question. I'm almost tempted to drop a scoop of ice cream in one.

A: Pours a dark brown with some ruby highlights around the edges. A two finger beige head forms and gently recedes to a ring. Some patchy lace is left behind.
S: Malty with some caramel and chocolate. Kind of musky and dank with a metallic twang.
T: The metallic character pretty much goes away after the beer breaths and warms up a little. Caramel and chocolate malt. More malty dark fruit flavors keep coming out as this warms up. Very enjoyable and subtle.
M/D: A medium body, but over carbonated. Easy and smooth to drink though.
This is a great beer. Choc continues to impress me with drinkable and subtle beers like this one.

A - Poured out a dark, dark brown almost black color with a small, foamy, off-white head. No lace.
S - It smelled of roasted malt, chocolate and toffee.
T - It tasted of sweet chocolate and caramel. It had a nice burnt toast malt.
M - It was very sharp, crisp and fairly fizzy. A light to medium-bodied beer.
D - This is a very tasty, very easy-drinking schwarzbier.

This one's been in my fridge for over a year thanks to a trade extra (lost track of who) and am now finally getting around to it.
Sam Adams perfect glass. Dark with dark brown streaks when held up to the light. Very thin beige head. Beautiful roast aroma.
Bonus for the label with the homebrew history and story behind the name. This is something I really appreciate that Choc does on their beers.
Wonderful roasted flavor with clean, dry finish that washes away aforementioned flavor. I really enjoyed this dynamic of this beer.
Last ¼ has a chocolate aroma.
I'm amazed that this comes in at a B- overall on BA. Perhaps I'm not completely up to the style guidelines for this one, but I prefer to judge a beer on how I enjoyed it rather than style.

I enjoyed this beer from the comfort of my own living room. From the 12 oz bottle received with the beer of the month club to a standard pint glass.
Appearance: Pours up a nice dark brown, almost black with a real thick creamy tan head.
Smell: Coffee and roasted malt aroma with a hint of sweet chocolate.
Taste: Based upon some of the other reviews of this beer, I let this warm up a little bit first. You can definitely taste the roasted malts and sweet chocolate flavors. A little bit sweet for a schwarzbier but still has some good flavor.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and smooth.
Drinkability: Overall a pretty tasty brew. I'm not always happy with the selection of the beer of the month club, but this was pretty good.

I got a bunch of these as extras and I am always thrilled to find new beers. I kicked this one off tonight in a massive six pack of new beers. Served cold and poured into a pint glass, this one was consumed on 04/23/2009.
The pour was nice. Rich dark brown in color, basically black with a small tan head across the top that lasted for a few moments before settling down into some nice side glass lacing. The aroma was lots of chocolate malts, hints of light roasting and a touch of peat. I expected your normal smoked beer here but it was very spicey for me. Lots of chili like notes in the flavor for me. Smooth, nice notes of chocolate, peat, roasted malts and that really nice chili pepper like spice especially in the finish, Smooth, even carbonation and a nice medium body.
Overall not a bad beer at all. Really a very intresting take on the style with a light spiceness that really made it stand apart. Overall I have had better in the style, but this one was still pretty damn good.

I got this as part of a BOTMC. I poured into a standard pint glass, pitch black with a slight white head. The nose was slight, perhaps roasted malt. The flavor was sweet with roasted malt. The finish lingers with a mild bitterness. This is light in body and easy drinking. Even though this is not my favorite style I enjoyed this.

A - Poured dark, nearly opaque, with a nice creamy head. There were dark ruby tones around the edges and head fell to a covering after a few minutes.
S - Aroma dominated by roasted and chocolate malts and that is about it.
T - Like the aroma lots of roasted and chocolate malts. Very much like a porter but quite clean tasting. Was pleased with the balance, the roasted and chocolate malt has with the base. Not overpowering and lends a good flavor without trying to knock you over with it.
M - Dry and smooth, feels fairly attenuated and not heavy.
D - Nice flavors, not overpowering, not a lot of hop bitterness or flavor...nothing over the top. All this makes the beer very drinkable.

Thanks willandperry for this beer, needless to say we don't get this one in Virginia.
A - dark brown almost black, when first poured, lot of head, calmed down after a few minutes where it almost looked like meringue on a pie
S - Not a lot of smell from this one, faint hint of smokiness
T - Hint of chocolate, very light taste
M - Very tasty beer, nothing overbearing, could easily be a session beer
O - Good beer, glad to have the chance to try it and would definitely like another, hint, hint, like to give other beers from this brewery a shot.

Sometimes after a hard day a good simple, straightforward beer is what you need. Sometimes you just need to leave the complexities of the world behind, thus the Miner Mishap was a no-brainer for me today. A very hard pour results in virtually no head, but after a second a little fiz rises to the top, through the middle of the dark brown brew. Smells of roasted nuts, toasted malts and maybe a few hops hiding deep in the shadows. The taste of the malts is a bit sweeter than the aroma, and there are some very subtle caramel notes as well as some hops and maybe some coffee beans. This fit the bill for what I was looking for. And while it's could use a bit more in the taste department, I'm not complaining, and am going to have a few to take the edge off the day.

Pours a pitch black, with a medium tan head. Smells of chocolate and toasty malt. Tastes like dark chocolate, and roasted malts. A nice kick from the bittering hops. Mouthfeel is full, slightly high carbonation levels. Quite drinkable, this would make a good session beer.
