In the heart of Munich, this is why you come to this city. Dark wood, old world ambience. Oompah band in lederhosen cranking out the singing songs. Didn't eat anything , just come here for the bier and the atmosphere. Touristy? Yes. But, I don't live in Munich so I must be a tourist!

I have been here three of four times. Always a fun stop. Yes it is a bit touristy, but the building and garten are great. Lots of different areas, a great band, a fun crowd, what is there not to like?

Service is pretty decent considering the crowd and they are fast with delivering the beers. I have never had bad or surly service here.

Selection is usually three of four beers but they are all right to style and well made.

The food is surprisingly good for such a large and busy spot.

Everyone who goes to Munich should go here at least once.

I've been here a couple of times. I like the building and its history. Can be very crowded & noisy and touristy. Has a souvenir shop. The drinking area is big with a polka band high up in the center of the room essentially, loads of long tables. There are no dancing signs in places but people dance anyway. Hofbrau beers are very good to excellent and the food is pretty good as well. I preferred visiting there during the day vs night. If in Munchen for a few days it's worth going to.

Visited with my wife late on a Friday about a week before Oktoberfest. I think it was starting to get close to closing -- crowds were dying down. Staff wasn't particularly friendly, but service was OK. We had a liter of beer each and left.

Location is big, super cool. They had a brass band. Building is old, spacious, looks very authentic. They had about three beers on tap.

It was around 2009 when i was there last, but one of those places you dont forget. I was with a medium sized group so service didnt exist. Selection was about what you would expect from a tourist fill beer hall. Didnt try the food, so no news there. Over all worth seeing just to say you did it. Just dont expect great things.

It's everything they told you it would be. Fun, crowded, tourists,..
The beer is solid, and it's a fun spot.

It's the experience you will instaface, snapwitter and mytube all day. The vibe alone is worth the visit. This place is as authentic, quintessential experience as it gets anywhere. If you're worried about the selection, the food or the fact they don't have whalezbro, then you suck.

The Hofbrauhaus is packed day and night, so it may take a while to be waited on, but once you are waited on, the waitress/beer maid will visit you often. Come for the atmosphere during the day, but depart before night unless you're okay with being around the sloppiest of drunks. The food is old-worldly to say the least, so if you're into calf lung, the cuisine here is top notch!

Although we unknowingly stumbled upon this well-known "tourist trap"/historic local brewhouse, we lucked into being present on the day of apparently one of the bigger soccer matches of the year with FC Bayern playing one of the best French teams. The atmosphere was raucous as team chants rang throughout the noisy open seating area and service was suprisingly swift considering all the patrons packed into one large room. Enjoyable experience, enjoying beers next to strangers and eventually striking up conversation when discovering an English-speaker in our midst. The atmosphere on this day was what made the experience, the liter beers didn't hurt. The original Helles Lager was solid. The Dunkel not my cup of tea. The food... is apparently not what they are known for.

Of course, no trip to Munich is complete without having a beer here, the world's most famous beer hall. This royal brewery was founded in 1589 to provide Bavarian King Wilhelm with his own dark beer. Hofbrau is now one of the most popular of Munich's breweries. Yes, there are tourists here for selfies and the oompa music; yes, it can become quite crowded, but .... you gotta go. I stopped by for lunch in the main hall during a relatively quiet Monday morning. There are rows upon rows of rustic wooden tables and benches. (The private tables are reserved for regulars.) Really, it is a beautiful room with arches and ceiling murals. As for service, a waiter came by the moment I sat down and in minutes brought me a glorious liter of some delicious dark beer - dunkles. Add to that some delectable pork and spätzle and I was in Heaven and walked away a happy camper. If you choose to not order a meal, then flag down a dirndl clad waitress for a giant pretzel. BTW: at the time of my visit (November 2017), a liter cost 8.60 euros.

Come for the history. This place is mobbed as it is one of the top tourist destinations, but its worth a stop for a liter. Its incredibly large and filled to capacity both inside and out. The beer is ok, but its worth seeing such an important part of history.

There isn't much that I can say about this brewery that hasn't been said, but to counteract the reports of the crowds, find a way to go early. We got there on a Monday at 11:00 and it was mostly empty. No music playing yet, but the beer was flowing. The vibe is huge here, thus a 5.0 score. Being this early the service was excellent.

I discovered that they had their Maibock available, so I ordered that and my wife had the Weissbier. Both were very good. To go with the beer we ordered a pretzel that was as big around as my head, and I based my food score of this review solely on that thing. Very tasty. They also have wine and limited spirits available.

Note: We left and came back 2-3 hours later just to walk in to see thee activity. Things were hopping by then, and the music was playing. But to anyone reading this, you gotta' go.

Here's the real deal--one of the very first buildings to be rebuilt after Munich was flattened in World War II. The place is huge with a large courtyard. The place is filled with tourists and (perhaps) locals. I did see some lederhosen but that may be the performers on break.

The place is happening with lots of frenetic activity, mostly from the servers racing around, scurrying between visitors and gawkers.

I don't see a listing for the HB house tent at Octoberfest so I'm writing it under this listing. Just at the Octoberfest this year 2016 which is just ending now. It was quite a wait to get in and I would recommend going early in the morning unless your going on a weekday. It took us about two hours to get in to the no reservation area, but once we got in it was awesome. I would say there was about three thousand people in the tent with about 3/4 of the tables reserved. If you want a table you have to reserve one for ten people about a year in advance so good luck with that. Otherwise it standing style tables. You can get the big beer mugs from the German girls going around and pay them directly, But no real food unless you have a table reserved. They do sell the big pretzels which is what we got. Over all it was like the biggest party you have ever seen with the German music band playing in the center and everything. If you want a less crowded quieter experience to to the main Hofbrauhous in Munich. Make reservations a week or more in advance if your going during Octoberfest! Prost!

If you are traveling in Germany (i.e., do not live there), you HAVE to experience the Hofbräuhaus in München. When people think of Germany, this is the picture that comes into their minds. Oompah band, sauerkraut with a variety of wurst, and gemutlichkeit; if you don't have a good time here, you are dead.
