Pours light brown/copper cloudy beer with dense head. Yeast, clove, sweet malt in aroma. Taste - expressive, sweet malt, wheat, tints of caramel and banana, light hop finish. A bit harsh aftertaste, it seems not similar to classic dunkelweizen, but pleasant in common.

500ml bottle poured into Weisse glass 22/4/13
A hazy reddish brown but has more clarity then I expected, two fingers of tan foam sits around for a few sips before falling to a thin film that leaves a single thick ring of lace
S a little bruised banana and brown sugar with a little chocolate covered raisin and sweet dark bread, earthy notes I can't place with a hint of molasses
T a little spice to go with what I smell but quite similar, solid example of the style but not mind-blowing, a little sweet but it works
M silky at first with the bubbles stopping short of creamy but they play their part, not thin but could use a little more body but it's a minor complaint
O pretty smooth easy drinking beer, not the best example of the style but nothing to be ashamed of
My profile pics from the Hofbrauhaus in Munich and I was pretty happy to have this little memory show up on the shelf here in Alberta

500ml bottle. Nice to see more choices than the long-standing (yet of course still drinkable) usual offerings from this most hallow of beer-producing regions.
This beer pours a hazy, dark chestnut brown-tinged amber colour, with two fingers of fizzy, very tightly foamy off-white head, which leaves a low shoreline of ebbing lace around the glass as it evenly slides away.
It smells of lightly roasted grainy caramelized wheat malt, banana bread, mild cloves, fruity apple and pear, and a slight earthy mustiness. The taste is more bready, wheaty malt, with just a wisp of toasted schwarz character, musty ripe bananas, softly yielding yeast, mildly sweet coriander spice, lilting chewing gum, and faint earthy, weedy hops.
The bubbles are a tad peppy, and somewhat frothy, and fade at an agreeable rate, the body a decent medium weight, and really quite smooth, in an unsurprisingly fruity manner. It finishes off-dry, the fruit and slight char continuing to play well together.
An adequately enjoyable dunkelweizen, the lack of expected roasted notes, while a concern at first, fades from worry rather quickly, leaving us with a nice fruity quaff, suitable for summertime excursions, and early spring snow days alike.

500ml bottle poured into a weizen glass by freshness date.
A:
Mahogany brown color, thick light tan head with good retention, there are particles of yeast floating all around from the push of medium to high carbonation, some patches of lace clinging. The carbonation produces the silky foam on top upon swirl.
S:
The aroma discloses banana to big banana bread, fruity, bready malt to dark bread and some clove spiciness.
T:
Bubblegum, fruity and banana ester snap first then supporting by some malty sweet and some zesty. Phenolic spice yet clove reveal from the middle to the end. Bitterness from hop is at the very end and leaves with just a wee note.
M:
Rather light to medium body with lively good crisp and carbonation generating fine refreshing touch through the palate, smooth and dry finish.
O:
The quaffable quality is so good, worthy Dunkelweizen.

500ml bottle, 11/12 date, poured into weizen glass
a: pours a very deep blackish ruby color, very pretty, with a one finger off-white head which stays nicely.
s: wheat and dark malts, but the thing that really hits you is the banana - smells like a tasty slightly overripe banana. really nice.
t: wheat and roasted malts, a bit of the banana but less than in the nose, and some yeastiness as well. tastes less "dunkel" than others i have tried.
o: a really nice dunkelweizen at a good price. perhaps the taste let me down a bit after such a great aroma, and there is a bit of a metallic finish.

Drank from my Erdinger Weizen glass
A - Pours a weak clear Mahogany colour, that has a two fingered off White head that reduces quickly to a film that laces.
S - Nose is mainly dark fruits and small banana.
T - Noy much really other than small Banana and fruity malts and a little metallic.
M - Medium body and medium carbonation,
O - Nothing fantastic and there are much better examples of the style.

500ml bottle poured in a mug.
A: Pours a chestnut cloud color with a medium beige and very fluffy head. Medium retention. In fact it never disappears totally leaving some nice lacings
S: Strong on banana esters as expected. Wheat and roasted malts. Honey and yeasts. Biscuity and bready
T: As the nose. Wheat, roasted malts, honey, yeast, banana. Dry and delicate
M: Creamy full bodied. Good carbonation
O: Very drinkable beer. Creamy and pleasant

Shy of mahogany but past copper. Head is not too timid at first but simmers down quickly and doesn't like much lacing if any. Nose is phenolic with clove and banana evenly balanced. Fruity enough with the hint of wheat.
Flavor is again on par with the style guidelines but in terms of the mouthfeel it's a let-down. Too thin and metallic, not enough good bubbles and the ones present are a little abrasive. Drinkable and decent, but the overall attenuation is off and it takes away from drinking this style.

A one finger off-white head dissipates fairly quickly atop the cloudy, reddish brown body of this Bavarian classic. I was a little surprised at the lack of staying power the head displayed, leaving only a sticky ring of lacing around my Weizen glass.
The smell is spicy, showing the expected banana esters along with freshly cut cucumber.
This Dunkelweizen is creamy, wielding a substantial mouthfeel along with high carbonation. The wheat twang combined with semi-sweet toasted malt notes makes for an interesting twist on the Weizen style. Varying sips render primarily clove, banana, apple skins and more wheaty acidity, gently moving to a faint hops presence in the aftertaste. It finishes fairly clean.
This beer is highly enjoyable, being a bit sweeter and more complex than its lighter sister. Hofbräu nailed the style... because they probably invented it.

Hofbrau Dunkel Weisse, PC, Florida
A hazy with a thick head. 4
S There is just the estery yeast smell typical of wheat beers with no roast aroma at all. If I couldn't see it, I doubt I could tell from the aroma that this was a dunkel. 3
T Not a lot of roast, but it is there. There is some biscuity flavor also. The taste is more similar to the HB hefe weizen than to a dunkel. In fact, I am puzzled at how they put so much color into the beer without adding roast flavor. It is smooth, very lightly hopped, and easy to drink. A dark beer for the non-dark beer drinker. A good beer, but lacks the roast to match the color. 3.5
M medium body, thick mouthfeel, carbonation is good. 4
D It is certainly an easy drinking beer, interchageable with the hefe, so far the best Hofbrau beer I've tasted and will be my choice when I visit HB until its gone. 4

500ml bottle, suprisingly avialable at a supermarket
A- Very cloudy brown. Faint head with decent retention except in the end
S- Wheat is obviously perceptible, you can also find caramel and banana
T- Pretty much what the smell suggest. Fine wheat as tipical of the best Weizens, but there is also caramel, fruity notes (banana being the clearest one) and roasted malt in the finish. Really complex for a Weisse
M- As smooth as you could ask but still bodied enough to support a wide range of flavours
D- You could drink this all day

Taken while watching the first game of Mexico at the world cup, dark wheat beer, one of my favorite styles, served in a weizen-bayern glass. Look: brown-chocolate color, fat foamy head, bad lacing. Smell: Roasted malts with chocolate and biscuity malts, some wheat too. Taste: Roasted malts, similar to the smell but with spicy hops and more wheat. Mouthfeel: Clean, high bitterness, medium body and high carbonation. Drinkability: too much wheat, it's good but has nothing to do against the great erdinger dunkel weissbier.

A: A very nice dark amber color, a little cloudy against ligth, with a two fingers head faint beige that fades not to fast with some residual.
S: Clear wheat aroma, citrus and sour is at hand.
T: Not very intense flavor, very wheat, some bitterness and in the middle the sour.
M: Refreshing at the beginning then the bitterness and sourness that last good enough with a some sticky feeling in the mouth.

A: Coloration reddish-brownish, semi translucent, abundant foam head wide ivory hue, its dissipation is slow and residual. Constant heavy carbonation.
S: Aroma with acid dyes, minimal perception of banana and Hops.
T: Very easy to drink, their flavors are subtle, making it lighter, the acidity is what most stands out, did little to end widespread.
