Just saw this beer for the first time recently in a random beer store, looks like it's already been out for a couple months. After getting the chance to chat with Mark Stutrud from Summit earlier this year about the Unchained series when Saga was released, its something i'll never pass up. Much like Goose's Fulton & Wood series, each brewer gets creative freedom to brew their own unique recipe.
Deeply saturated hazed auburn, reddish russet in the light, with a billowing craggy head of eggshell foam that forms crazy peaks & valleys as it settles. Sticky concentric rings of lace in the glass. Ample head retention.
Sweet and spicy grainy rye aroma, specialty grains.
Lightly bitter with a spicy grainy breadiness, smooth and somewhat full bodied. Malt driven, some bittering hops but not much in the way of hop-derived flavors. Not bad though, and worth trying for Rye Beer fans.

pours deep amber with a fluffy head and good stickage
Aroma of mashed malt, salt water, herbal hops, earth
Rich malty graininess with the bite of peppery rye. Nice nutty bitterness, with a touch of brown sugar to balance, but this is malty without being sweet. Herbal hops.
Body is medium to full, with a moderate carbonation. Drying finish.
Excellent brown rye. Not as sweet as a typical red ale. Malt and rye dominate, giving a bourbon like sourness. Great beer.

Old 152 pours a cloudy sedimentation full brown color, with a nice lacing head. There is a dry, hoppy like aroma. The taste has a nice mild hoppy kick, with heavy wheat like flavors. Good full flavor, a bit bitter, and dry. Overall a very nice complete and well balanced beer. Very straight forward and good beer.

Single finger off white head with retention and lacing on a murky marroon brown with golden hue body. Aroma is covered quite a bit by the thick head with mint, toffee, brown sugar and caramel malts. Flavor has more of a chocolate and bread malt base with nuts, toffee sweetness, rye, hint of plum and raisin for dark fruit, some tart citrus and earthy hops. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Fairly complex and a lot of flavor.

In order to do this review with a fresh perspective, I've forgotten everything I've ever known about this beer. Except that it has something to do with a pre-prohibition recipe and a sour mash technique. There's nothing else about the beer on the label except for the brewer's name, and his signature. Perhaps there's more on the six-pack holder…I'm going to look for it now…all of the technical information is there but no background stories…5.6% ABV, 55 IBUs…hops: Cluster, Northern Brewer…malt/grain: Victory/Crystal Medium, pale malt, rye malt, disteller's malt (ooo!), maize (that's corn to you and I), white wheat.
I'll skip the rest and open 'er up:
Lovely chestnut brown, full blooming off-white head, leaving loads of lace.
Complex grain bill evident in aromatics. Have to say it: I am getting some whiskey-ish notes, for certain. A little sweet, a bit sour and musty, but very likable. Intriguing to say the least.
Taste: Hop bitterness starts us off on the palate. Tasty stuff. Spicy rye malt hits next. Twice as nice. Plenty of character in this one. Continues long through the drink, with a lush, malty finish. Alcohol and hops are mellow enough to ease the drinking, leaving this a vastly pleasurable brew that tastes better with each new swallow.
Ladies and gentlemen, I might be turning into one of those fussy fuddy-duddies decrying the way things are today, and those kids, blah, blah, blah…But, really, does everything have to be 10% alcohol? There are a lot of beers out there that I could enjoy more often if there were just 8% instead of 10%, or 6 % instead of 8.

12oz bottle, caramel colored ale with a frothy but thin ivory head that leaves a little lacing on the glass. Fruity aroma, with earth, apple, woodsy, white wine also. Bold spicy rye, fruit, apple, faint toffee, earthy, grassy hop, some tartness noted for taste. Mouth-feel is creamy & smooth, finishes dry but clean. Overall, this was different than any other rye beer I've had in the past. I liked the fruity notes, but I was kind of wishing the ABV was higher on this one. It seemed like it was missing something. Maybe because I was expecting to drink an old ale brewed with rye until I saw the actual ABV and the style. Wishful thinking...still decent though.
