We go here all the time, so I've seen the good and bad of Dressel's, but it's mostly good.

The good starts with the atmosphere. The original restaurant really feels like you're in the UK. They added on a lot more space that doesn't have the same feel, but doesn't detract. A nice sized patio as well.

The only bad is the service. It can be spotty. Everybody is covering all tables, so sometimes a table can be forgotten.

The beer selection is pretty good. About 12 taps, that rotate a little, and they always have an O'Fallon IPA cask. Prices are reasonable for the area.

The food is good as well. Always an interesting special of the day, and the every day meals, such as the burger, are solid. Highly recommend starting the meal with chips and rarebit. Or if you just want a snack, the pretzel & rarebit is great.

Check http://stlhops.com/beer-lists/ for a somewhat recent taplist.

Dressel’s is located on Euclid in the Central West End, a great neighborhood to walk around. The bar is in a really nice, wood-and-brick, warm, homey room, and there is a side main dining room. The service is friendly, though not particularly beer-knowledgeable from what I could tell. The beer selection is good, with about a dozen taps and a few dozen bottles. They had one cask, O’Fallon 5-Day IPA, when I visited. Other taps included 3 New Belgium (including one Lips of Faith), Bell’s Expedition Stout, Left Hand, Boulevard, Odell, Guinness, Strongbow, and a few other local and regional things. The food was pretty good, albeit nothing too special. This was a nice place to stop in on a cold day, warm up, have a couple beers and food.

"Where food loves drink... and life and art embrace".

The exterior featured a raised platform ringed by an iron railing for outdoor seating. The entryway was in an inverted triangle shape with an outwardly bowed window that ran from floor to ceiling to the right of the doorway. Just inside the door was the long, tile-topped, race track oval-shaped bar with shelves in the overhead for both their liquors as well as busts of famous composers.

Speaking of which, the right wall, facing aft, featured caricatures of classical composers. A snug in the right/center was dedicated to jazz. On the left wall, it began with a salute to Wales and their incredible Welsh language. May I buy a vowel, please? That quickly segued into caricatures of writers and poets, including Ginsburg, Papa Hem, and Faulkner.

A set of steps on the left led up to The Pub Above, a separate meeting area with its own short bar; a working fireplace (!); a game room with a billiards table and two English dart boards; plus a killer view of the street below.

Beer: Twelve (12): Double Dragon Bitter; D. D. Extra Bitter; O'Fallon 5-Day IPA; Sam Adams Seasonal (Winter Ale); Fat Tire; Tuchor Hefeweizen; Delirium Tremens; Fullers London Porter; Maudite; Stells; Strongbow Cider.

Cask: 5-Day IPA (when available).

Dressels reminds me of what I would expect to find in a small town somewhere in Great Britain. Always quite, casual atmosphere that has tables on the wall with a half oval bar in the center of the place. There is also a fireplace along the wall that creates a nice cozy feel during the cold winter months. The beer selection is not bad with Tucher, 5 day (on tap and cask), Schlafly, among others that escape me now. The food is good with a choice of mostly pub food. Good place for a relaxing brew with some friends or family.

I FINALLY made my way to Dressels. I was quite impressed with how authentic this place is when compared to the British pubs. It was quite nice and quiet where I could hold a conversation and not have to talk over other people and background music. I have heard it was pricey however I did not feel it was that bad. My double veggie burger was $7 and my cask O'Fallon IPA's were $4.50. Not too shabby. I guess everyone can bring your food or drink so some items came quicker than others, but nothing I would complain about. A very comfortable place. I do plan on returning.

I'm staying in St. Louis for a week, and had the luck of wandering into this establishment first. I hope all of St. Louis is this good :)

Atmosphere - First impression is good, with lots of pictures/memorabilia on the walls... Then we were told about the upstairs... beautiful! This place has tons of character.

Quality - Wow, food is fresh. Potato chips that are sliced in the kitchen then fried on order. Beer is fantastic, and food is equally impressive.

Service - Good. I don't like to be bothered much when I'm dining, and they didn't do much bothering :) But they were always responsive to requests and questions about the city.

Selection- I count 12 tap handles of which they "grudgingly keep one handle for a mass produced light beer" (from menu). Drafts include Double Dragon Bitter Ale (and Extra Bitter), Guinness, Fuller's London Porter, Delerium Tremens, Fat Tire, Skinny Dip, Mothershp Whit, Boulevard Lunar Ale, and 5 Day IPA. Bottles are better than average selection in quality, though not a huge quantity. I think that is representative of their selection -- good quality, not high quantity. Bottles of note are: BLVD Bully Porter, New Belgium 1554, Dragon ESB, and Delirium Tremens. There is a beer engine sitting empty -- I am told it will soon be pumping a wonderful cask-conditioned brew.

Food - Like I said above -- awesome! This is true fresh cooking. I had the philly steak, and my business associate had the bratwurst. He thought the bratwurst was seasoned well and was good meat. As far as the philly... I've been to Philly, and this one was better than the one I had there. Juicy and full of flavor. Delicious! Business associate also noted the bread pudding was the best he had ever had, and was topped with a bourbon caramel sauce.

***

Had a chance to meet with the owner after lunch, who said his father established the joint. The 12 handles are new, and he'd like to expand. There are plans to put a special version of the local 5 Day IPA on the beer engine. When asked why he thought the place worked, he responded "Because it's authentic". Amen.

This is a definite re-visit next time I am in St. Louis (and several times more before I leave). :)

I had the opportunity to go to dinner at Dressel’s recently. I just moved back to the area, and I had fond memories of this place from living here several years ago. It’s famous for Welsh beer (Double Dragon and others on tap), good food, and quirky bartenders. I can say my visit contained all 3. They have about 8 beers on tap including Fat Tire, Boulevard wheat and Bully Porter, a Schlafly tap, Double Dragon and ESB, Fullers Porter, Guinness, and a few others. The beers I had were fresh, and tasty no complaints on that side.

I had a cup of soup, and a chef salad with grilled portabella mushrooms. The soup was a clam chowder, and while it was a little thin, it tasted excellent, and was fresh The salad was served in a stainless mixing bowl. It was fresh, and delicious. Item 2 fulfilled. Don’t forget to have the fresh pretzels or chips if you go.

Service. This place is known for quirky bartenders. That can mean 1 of 2 things. Either they pay attention to the customers, or they don’t. Unfortunately, I had the latter. I had to stop the guy and ask to order, and ask for a refill twice. Not good. Call me spoiled, but I used to bartend, and you never let a glass get dry, or allow a person to be hungry. I like this place, but quirky does not equal bad service. Needs to be worked on.

Still. Great food, and good beer, go there.

Update:
Visited a few times recently, and fortunately the service has been getting better. It may have been exceptions, but I had quality service in my last 2 visits. The upstairs has been redone, and is a really nice space. Open, casual, and not smokey. They've picked up the New Belgium Seasonal (dropped recently by llywellins), and that is a wonderful addition. Even mreo reasons to stop by.

Dressel's is one of my favorite places. The beer selection has recently improved, and now there are eight drafts available, two of which are quite rare: Felinfoel Double Dragon and ESB. Also available are Fuller's London Porter, two Boulevard selections, New Belgium's Pilsner, Guinness, and Sam Adams. Strongbow (can't bear to call this stuff "cider") is also on tap. The Double Dragon is a top-notch best bitter, and the ESB, while good, is a bit sweet for my palate.

The real hits at Dressel's are the atmosphere (which includes the always entertaining staff), and the food. Truly good pub fare, with an interesting selection of daily specials. Particular favorites are the pork loin sandwich, which is marinated in a beer/soy sauce combo before being grilled, and the Bavarian Chips, which are freshly made to order. Despite the small selection, I've spent many a happy evening with a couple pints of Double Dragon, a basket of chips, and a pork sandwich. Dressel's does get quite smoky later in the evening, especially on weekends, so go early, be prepared, or go when its temperate enough to sit at one of the tables on the sidewalk.
