Poured on-tap into a snifter glass at Magnolia Brewpub. I believe the ABV of this thing this time around was 9.9% (gulp). Split with a friend for obvious reasons anticipating inebriation. Had about 8oz.
Pours a golden orange looking color, in a way that's really unlike any tripel I've ever seen. Good creamy foam coats the top at first, but it dies down to nothing, as does the carbonation in the long run. Still, the orange golden color is very pretty, and even when there's no carbonation it looks like a robust blend of brandy and beer. No lacing. Huge alcohol legs.
Speaking of alcohol, that's pretty much all you get up front at the very first whiff. Luckily no nail polish or sulfurous flavors, but still extremely boozy. If you've been reading my reviews as of late, you've surely seen by now that while I don't particularly mind it if beers contain extra alcohol, I do mind it when it's not concealed to the point where it adds nothing to the flavor. Upon further examination (as it warms), it reveals notes of bananas, apples, candi sugar, sweetened apricots, butterscotch, and more booze. Way too much heat, even for the style.
The flavor is actually not as intimidating as I anticipated, but it's still coated with booze over the decent fruity esters. Notes of bananas (from the yeast), apricots, cider, and bittered orange peel come and go, only to be pelted by the caramel-y candi sugar and then a little bit more heat from the alcohol. Gets syrupy but slightly grainy in the long run, especially as it loses its carbonation. Not graceful or elegant at all. Was a chore to even finish my mere 8oz.
I really need to sample strong beers before I order them more often. It's not that this is necessarily a bad beer, per se, it's just way too over-the-top in terms of presenting what makes the style so great. Hardly any dried hopped character, not carbonated enough, too much candi sugar, lack of spiciness, and too much of an overt boozy flavor that overpowers whatever this had. I think the guys at Magnolia know what they're doing in terms of their more normalized beers, but I do think these experiments need lots more tweaking. This is a hard style to work with - I trust that over time it could get better.

Good looking beer. Bready nose on this one. Grain character abounds. Soapy tones are there too with a consistent sweetness. This is a pretty good Belgian style ale. Hard to pull these styles off well, and this one works well enough, all things considered.

On tap at Magnolia during February's strong beer month. ABV is actually 9.3%.
Clear gold body. Head dissipates quickly to a ring, leaving no lacing.
Smells malty with some fruit elements.
Tastes very sweet, floral honey. There is a little bitterness in the finish.
Body is light as is the carbonation, giving this a rather flat mouthfeel.
Overall, on the cloyingly sweet side. I struggled to finish it.

A- Pours a tangerine color with a nice, frothy off white head.
S- Hints of citrus, belgian yeast, various spices.
T- Lots of belgian yeast and spice up front, citrus, orange, banana
M- Medium bodied with a good deal of carbonation.
D- This was a nice beer and one of the easier drinkers in "the strong beer experience".

On tap at Magnolia's, listed on the board at 8.75%.
Served up hazy dark orange, with a white, dense head.
Nice Belgian character in the nose with delicate spicing.
Very fruity, citrusy and a hint of coriander.
Orange bubblegum.
Smooth and creamy on the pallet with alcohol nill present.
Juicy and fresh.
A bit heavy on the malt for style, but it works here.
A mild, offsetting bitterness mingles with honey and tangerine in the finish.
Not quite a Triple, but a great beer nonetheless.

Sampled during the 2004 Strong Ale Month in the comemorative Belgian globe snifter style glass.
Beer was served way too cold But the aroma wafts up as mild fruit and spice aromas popping up with honey as the glass warms
Flavor is banana and spice on a rich body to start with. A growing twitch of cinnamon comes through to an overly sweet finish that is combatted by the spice and growing sensation of alcohol.

I had this tripel on cask at Magnolia pub (and yes, it has two p's in the name) back in March and found it to be excellent. It is a golden colored tripel, coming out very light with a minimal white froth on top of the glas. It smells of honey and roasted malt and tastes excellent. The sugars in the beer combine with the malt to keep the bitterness at bay until the very finish of this one. It is well recommended, not Magnolia's best but still very good as a tripel. Watch out, though, I was told by the waitress that this one's ABV was over 10%. (It's the only beer Magnolia makes that I can't find the ABV to.)
