Presentation: One pint, .9oz brown bottle with raised glass of hop vines below the neck of the bottle. Brief history of where the term "jock" came from ... Jocks - powerful fighting men. Freshness date clearly scored.

Appearance: Tarnished copper in colour with a pillowy textured head that slowly dissipates into a fine sticky lace.

Smell: Wonderful toffee and caramel with some vague hop aroma, mild alcoholic esters and ripe tropical fruit.

Taste: An oh so smooth malty mouthfeel rolls off the tongue with a complex mix of many malt flavours ... a mild toffee sweetness, grain and biscuit with a hint of buttery diacetyl. Then quickly comes the fruitiness which is mild but evident with its warming alcoholic esters. Hop bitterness is on par with a touch of spice and leafy flavour.

Notes: Quite pleasing to the nose and a warming feeling from the alcohol help make this an exceptional brew. Bliss in a bottle, make sure to serve at cellar temp (55-60*F). Goes great with a fine pork or lamb loin with roasted root vegetables.

Pours a murky deep amber to near mahogany depending on the background. A 3 finger light tan head fills my Duvel tulip. It recedes rather quickly leaving light lacing.

The aroma is of spiced dark fruits and light caramel.

Sweet upfront but with a substantial twang and a bitternes from the hope and burnt malt. As the beer warms, the twang disappears and the bitterness mellows leaving a nicely sweet and grainy brew.

Medium full bodied and smoooth if drunk at room temperature as the Broughton website suggests.

Decent straight out of the fridge, but let it warm and as been said before, it is "bliss in a bottle".

Bottle shared by Dan.

A: Pours slightly hazy, but nearly clear brown with a 1/4" white head which fades to the edge of the glass.

N: Caramel, dark fruits, brown sugar/molasses.

T: Malty grains, some faint roast and char. Nice peaty earth notes.

M: A bit light bodied with light carbonation.

O: Just O.K. and pretty standard.

From the 500 ml. bottle stamped BBE NOV 12 - L1132-14:09. Sampled on March 24, 2012. It pours dark amber chestnut brown with a largem, fluffy tan head that lingers. The aroma has some obvious sweet dark malts, raisins, and mild hops on the nose but it is also very subdued all in all. The body is medium to bold. This does not have quite as much oomph as the typical Scottish stiong ale but all of the characteristics are there is a mellow sort of way including sweet dark malts and moderate bitterness. This beer tasted beeter with each sip as it warmed up.

Apperance: A very dark mahogany with garnet hues around the edges. On top is a head around an inch high that has a creamy texture.

Aroma: Dark roasted malts, toffee, faint scotch, a touch of butterscotch, tart fruit in the end.

Taste: Lots of malt in the begining. Bicuity texture, toffee, scotch notes in the middle. In the end is a very smooth finish with a faint fruity tartness.

Notes: A dam tasty beer nicely drinkable. The malts in it do very well. Cheers.

Poured from 500mL bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: rich amber-brown hue with crystal clarity and a nice effervescence. Head poured a thick finger of frothy tan foam. A good looking beer!

Smell: nice malt aroma which is lightly fruity and lightly grainy. Normally I don't like a raw grain character, but with the light fruitiness of this beer it works well.

Taste: rich malty flavor with a pretty strong bitterness coming in right at the very end. There's a bit of an acidic twang to the mix which, like the grain in the aroma, I wouldn't normally like; here, it feels at home. Good!

Mouthfeel: medium body, perhaps a tad light for a wee heavy. Big carbonation leads to big creaminess, though, and I like it.

Overall: this is a very solid wee heavy. It's got some flavor characteristics of which I'm not normally a fan, but here they work; it's just a harmonious beer.

Poured from a 500mL bottle into a snifter dated best before Dec 2012. Well chilled.

A: Dark red/brown. Cream colored, 2 finger head, good lacing, good head retention.

S: Raisin, toffee, it has some smell which reminds me of scotch (maybe peat, not smokey).

T: Dates, raisins, prunes, a lot of fruity sweetness. A little bit of hop and malt in the aftertaste. The flavor is definitely dominated by the sweetness.

M: A great amount of carbonation, no astringency whatsoever, nice mouthfeel.

Overall, it's a very interesting beer, not so common of the style, but tasty. There's a slight hint of alcohol but it fits in well with the flavor profile.

Mahogany brown colour with a finger sized, light tanned colour head that has a frothy, bubbly texture. Good head retention on this one, leaving a half centimetre thick foamy head throughout.

Caramel, toffee and some solid earthy hops and malts make up the majority of this drinks aroma along with some background dark fruits and berries. It is very sweet and has a subtle burnt sugar note.

Sweet and malty in taste with brown sugar, toffee and caramel flavours all blending together well. There is some nice fruity notes at the tail end of the drink as well.

Medium to full bodied and mild carbonation with this beer. It has a quite creamy texture to it and a warm, bittersweet finish.

A rather nice, well balanced beer that goes down quite well that has a nice bittersweet finish to it. It is quite malty and as such probably not a beer that I’ll have all that often but certainly one that I did enjoy.

The bottle was about 6 months old - fridge-stored the entire time, yet most of the guts were left intact. Rich, murky burgundy (sediment suspended) with copious head on the pour, soft collar all that remained. Port comes to mind on first snuff, but it's soon apparent that the centerpiece of its nasal experience is its ripe estery love handles, glistening with caramel musk. A ton of fruity malt flavor carried along with a wafery, subtle brown sugar essence. Everything the way it should be. Just a wee bit surprised by the minute deficit of full-bodied viscosity. With glass un-cool to the touch, this tenuous feel goes away slightly, as flavor and a delicate chewiness develops.

All-around, this is a solid strong Scottish ale. Quite tasty and easy to quaff. Curious how this matches up with their Black Douglas, which I remember having a more pronounced caramel flavor and body...

This was a gift from a friend. He made a pretty good choice in sharing this beer with me.

I poured this bottle into a pint glass. It left about a finger of head from the pear. I like the pleasant earthiness in the aroma. I also smell some caramel.

I really like the coloring of the beer. It is a nice auburn color.

The caramel and earthiness come through in the first drink, and they continue after each drink. I like the way this plays across the pallatte, and it works very differently than the American ales.

This was a nice dark beer for later in the evening. It had the dark flavor, but the texture was nicely light.

Pours a dark copper/brown color with one finger of tan head that sticks around for a long time, leaves some lacing on the glass. When held to the light it's a deep burnished copper color that is crystal clear.

Aroma is fairly mild but there is caramel and toffee up front with subtle, dark fruits.

Taste is a bit surprising, much more fruitiness than anticipated. Begins with dark fruits and caramel, moves into light toffee and a hint of crisp bitterness. The finish is dryer than expected, leaving very light roast, tobacco dark fruits and some astringency. Overall thinner tasting than I had expected.

Mouthfeel is medium with medium carbonation. Carbonation is too high for me on this beer.

Overall this beer leaves me wanting, it strikes most of the flavors I was hoping for but it just didn't come together right... until it warmed up and I started drinking it faster. Then it tasted more balanced and smooth, I came to enjoy it but I wouldn't call it great.

Notes from 05/31/2010:

500 mL bottle at 50 degrees into a nonic pint.

A: It pours a dark red/mahogany color with a very small white head that doesn't last.

S: Peat, caramel, burnt sugar, and toffee.

T: Lots of caramel, peatiness, toffee, hazelnut, biscuit, and some smoke.

M: It is medium-thick with plenty of creaminess and a relatively clean finish.

D: It's more like wee light than wee heavy. This style is usually much more flavorful and at $4.99 for this, I can't consider it very drinkable.
