Very dark brown, not quite Porter dark in the pint shaker. Watery mouthful in a nice way. Sweet and malty but full of roasted flavors. Returns to the usual caramel taste, but pleasantly different. A bit fruity, like sweet apples, with a faint burr of the dirty sort of hops. Tends toward a mucky aftertaste.

On the whole this is better than some Brown Ales I've had, but for the English style it's nothing to brag about. On tap at Cricket's in Lubbock. [From notes overlooked after 11/07/2012 tasting]

Served in a pint glass, a little under 1/4 inch head dark brown/black color. Smells like nuts, coffee, and syrup. However the taste and feel is very light, it smells heavier than it feels. I can taste molasses with a hint of caramel and subtle smoke. The carbonation isn't bad. All and all not bad for a brown ale. I'll definitely have this again.

Pretty auburn brown color and clear, one finger head was ok and left some lacing.

Smell is brown sugar, molasses, nuts, chocolate, caramel.

Flavor is sweet but not overpoweringly so, with a nutty component, some chocolate, toffee, molasses, brown sugar, and a well balancing bitterness from the hops.

Medium body with smooth, medium levels of carbonation. Sweet, nutty aftertaste.

Overall it's quite enjoyable. I have enjoyed beers from this company so far, and plan to try more of them when I can.

Popping the top this brew has a smell of pancake syrup and molasses. Pours to a root beer color with a tan head. Taste is sweet yet with just the right bitterness to cleanse the sweetness. Mouthfeel is smooth and carbonated just right to bring up the dry milk chocolate flavor. Finish is well balanced as well as it is flatly sweet wit some bitterness. A very smooth drinker. I shall return.

I tried this on my last trip to Houston. It came as part of a Real Ale sampler pack that I found at a local liquor store there called Spec's. $8.41 for a six pack. Very disappointed to discover all the beers were past their "best before" date. This one has an August 2012 pull date and this is already September of 2012, so it won't be at its freshest.

The beer poured a dark brown, slightly hazed color with ruby red highlights when held to light. I only got a thin beige rim for a head that lasted less than 30 seconds and left very little lacing. I thought this might be due to it being past its freshness date, but after reading other reviews I see no one got much of a head out of this beer.

Smells nutty with some caramel, chocolate, and coffee in it.

Nice chocolate/coffee flavor. More dry than sweet with a slight hop twang in the background.

Medium bodied with medium carbonation.

A decent brown ale, although I would have preferred a more nutty taste which would have kept it more true to style.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass, best by date 9.12.12. This pours a dark brown slightly hazy with a lace leaving tan head which quickly dissipate. The smells are of roasted nuts, caramel, toffee. The feel is medium. The tasts is good enough bitter hops and malts, a little nut flavors with caramel malts.

The bottle reads best by 7-26-12.

Poured into a pint glass. Pours dark toffee brown with a creamy, biege head. The beer is not completely opaque because some ruby brown color is visible along the bottom of the glass. The head dissipates, leaving no lacing along the side of the glass. The aroma is of dark roasted barley malt with some nuttiness and chocolate. The taste follows the nose very well. There are rich flavors from the dark roasted malts that carry some mild sweetness with the roasty character really coming through in the back. There are flavors of chocolate in the front and that nutty character I picked up in the nose coats the tongue really well. The body is medium with moderate carbonation. There is a dry finish to this beer. It is smooth and highly drinkable. This is a very good beer. It is a satisfying brown ale.

A. A very deep brown. Hazy opaque. No real head and no lacing. Clearish at the top and bottom of the glass.

S. Lovely nuty scent. Chocolate. Malt.

T. It has a coffee taste to it. It has a bit of a tart aftertaste. There's a toffee taste, more than coffee. Malty.

M. Very crisp and smooth.

O. It's a solid, smooth brown ale. It's very basic, but it has a nice sweetness to it.

A- Dark brown, fairly translucent. Reddish when held to light. Thin quickly dissipating tan head when poured into pint glass.

S- Strong nutty malt. Slight alcohol and sweetness.

T- Sweet and nutty upfront, followed by slight bitterness and nutty finish.

M- Medium-bodied, smooth with slight alcohol feel. Coats mouth for afterfeel.

O- Pleasant but wholly plain. Not too much there to stand out from the crowd.

Deep, reddish-brown color with a fine, thick off-white head. Fair lacing...

Aroma is rich burnt and roasted malts; hints of tobacco; light coffee...faintly earthy hop notes...

Softly burnt, caramelized sugars at first taste. A fine, medium strength bitterness at the finish. Nicely balanced.

Mostly medium body characteristics. Fine carbonation feels velvety on the tongue. Smooth, somewhat rich finish.

A fine brown ale representation. Full flavored wrapped in a delightful medium body. Sweet but not overly so. Rich and complex...

Another part of my first beer trade with Dolph1979...

Served from a bottle into a room temperature mug. Nice nutty flavor. Great mahogany brown color. Not much in the way of a head and is a bit fizzy for my taste but a good overall beer. Some lacing. A beer that is definitely worth another go. Maybe not a regular, but one that will meet a need in a pinch.

A Christmas gift from my sister in law - such a great gift!

Appearance - A medium brown with a reddish hue. Interesting color for an dark ale, I was surprised by the red in this! It almost looks unfiltered though, and it is not advertised as such so it knocks it down some.

Smell - A deep full smell. A light coffee and with full earth tones. I really do like the smell of this beer, reminds me vaguely of a porter.

Taste - I pick up a metal taste first thing. Some people may be turned off by this, but I think it makes it different from the rest. The ale also tastes of walnuts and pecans. Maybe the hops from the region add to this?

Mouthfeel - A decent mouthfeel, but the metal taste seems to interfer with the ability of the carbonation.

Overall - A good beer, but this one is a beer that I would drink with a heavy meal like a steak.

Poured from bottle into a pint.

Clear brown, like strong tea, with some ruby hints. Small dense tan head.

Smell is gentle malts, slight almond. Taste is similar, but with an odd metallic and grainy tinge. Slightly unpleasant.

Mouthfeel is somewhat thin. Not very impressive overall.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Thanks to bhollas for this one.

A: Dark brown color. Light comes through but barely. One finger tan head with awesome retention and just ok lacing.

S: Chocolate and toasted malts. Light coffee. Simple aroma but pretty good.

T: Toasted malts. Chocolate and coffee are very light. Pretty plain but not bad.

M: Light bodied. Higher carbonation. Fairly crisp.

O: Pretty decent brown ale. Nothing wrong with it at all but nothing setting it apart either

S: The beer has a very nice roasted malt scent and and maybe some sweet caramel.

T: I am getting a bit of roasty tastes, some caramel and even some very nice nutty tastes.

M: The beer gives a nice little tingle on the back of the throat and has a slight bit of carbonation.

O: I have had this beer a million times and it never gets old. It is a very solid beer and has different qualities that you dont find in other beers. Pretty tasty.

Have to thank Dave for this one. Pours brown with not much light getting through. Head was off white and went away but laced a little. Smells malty with no hop. Tastes nice and malty with some English hop. Starts sweet and ends semi-dry. Not bad I'd take another if offered.

Pour is dark brown - about to a brown porter. Slight head of off-white. Decent nose of chocolate malt. A hint of dried fruit.

Dry entry and throughout. True to what the label describes - a dry brown ale. Chocolate malts come through. Malts rather subdued, not at all sweet...yes a dry brown ale. Hints of coffee, a mocha-lite. A little hops flavor with the chocolate bar on finish.

Nice flavors for a brown ale.

Well crafted

A: very nice brown color with a light brown color head, not to big but present and medium dissipation and medium carbonation just enough for a permanent layer on top of the beer.

S: nice toasted malty aroma but not to intense just classic smell.

T: full toasted malts with little hops not too much as with style.

M:very drinkable with nice sweet beginning and changing for a little bittersweetness.

Poured from a 12oz bottel, best by November.

A- Deep opaque brown. Very little head that faded quick, and left nearly no lacing.

S- Toffe and caramel, typical brown ale.

T- Roasted malts, not too dark. Some toffee, clean finish.

M- Medium bodied with prickly carbonation.

O- No off flavors, but there's nothing special about it either. I can't help but think that this is a very safe interpretation of the style. I got it as part of a Real Ale sampler, not a bad beer but I won't be buying it again.

The beer pours about the same colour as the bottle, and has a beautiful off cream head that lingers and lingers, leaving nice lacing down the sides.

The nose isn't particularly strong, but it is subtly pleasant. Somewhat roasty with almost a lactose tinge. Malty.

It tastes alright. I'm not terribly impressed, but I'm not really disappointed either. There is a little sour twinge at the very end, but it's predominantly malty and not particularly brave. After a couple of sips there's almost a little bit of a vanilla aftertaste sneaking around my tongue that seems to kind of come from nowhere.

Drinks fairly easily. I almost want to say smoothe, but that really isn't it. it's got a little bit of a carbonation bite, but it's pleasant and drinkable.

Overall I'd say it's ok. I am not really disappointed, but it doesn't really excite me either. I got it as part of the sampler pack and I don't regret it, but I probably wouldn't really buy a sixer of this on it's own unless there wasn't really anything else to drink

Pours an opaque brown with a small, off white head that quickly fades.

Smells of caramel malt mixed with some roast, sweetness, and slightly sweet oxidized flavor creeps in (something I'm noticing in a lot of Real Ale beers).

Up front caramel and roast flavor that move into a slightly spicy hop character with a smooth, dry-ish,slightly bitter finish. Slightly complex, toasty, autumnal, and tasty.

Medium body, medium carbonation...fits the style well.

This is a nice brown ale that isn't too sweet. It plays everything safe mostly but still has an interesting taste. I have no real complaints except of the slightly oxidized character. I'd buy it again.

Dark brown with a light tan head that leaves scattered lace.

Smell is lightly roasted malt, caramel.

Taste is a little sweet lactose, light roast, some iced coffee and bakers chocolate. Full flavored, nice.

Mouthfeel is dry, some slickness, medium bodied.

Drinkability is pretty good, I really enjoy the full flavor, and don't get to drink to many browns in the PNW, so am really enjoying this. Well made.

12 oz. bottle poured into a Sam Adams Perfect pint glass. The liquid itself is a warm roasted chestnut color, when held to the light there are amber highlights, well filtered with good clarity. Tan white head fades after a little bit, not much lacing here.

Smell is good, certainly well malted. Some decent dark roasted coffee flavors, sort of "porteresque." Slight chocolate aromas, not hoppy maybe a a little earthy. Good overall, slightly better than your average to the style.

Taste is a slight step up from the smell in my opinion. If you prefer hoppy brown ales, this one is not for you. If you're looking for the other more malted ones however, I'd recommend this one. Very well malted, strong roasted coffee with a little cream. Not very bitter, some slight chocolate tones and slightly earthy and bitter. It's pretty straight forward and good.

Mouthfeel is good as well. Full bodied and slightly complex because it's slightly creamy with a bitter finish. Well done overall. Thanks depechemode1983 for the trade, happy to get to try a good brown ale that isn't available in my area.
